I was a GS-13 and later 14. The 'mid '90s to '03 had recalls which obviously you go and then "opportunities" which I volunteered for. I didn't have any awkward employment aspects as the same 2 Star was my boss either way. Usually the 2 Star would call and tell me I'm doing something and I'd ask what I was wearing. I did learn about what the protections are and are not for the Fed side. You'll have a job when you get back, but it may not be the same one. You can be placed in an "equivalent" position which "has the same promotion potential". I've never seen the second aspect work out in reality if it happens. The other thing is the culture of your organization. Does it support or passively resist MIL absence. You should have some idea on where on the the scale your outfit sits. Everything said, you have far better employment protection vs. being on the outside.

So you're where you're at. Where do you want to be at 60 looking back? What regrets do you want to avoid? How mercenary do you want to be about your retirement? I recommend doing stuff so when you quit, you preferably give yourself a pay raise. Everything you do or don't do affects what happens at 60. So do you take the blue pill or the red pill? CAPT Kevin B.
