Yes, but reality is, there has been no time available to you or your commander in many years. It has been shown in several research and study's, there literally is not enough training time in a calendar year to perform ALL of the mandatory training on the books. As such, there is NO time for you the NCO as it is all accounted for already.
That said... unit by unit will choose to allow time on a training calendar for non Top down driven training... Wither those few precious hours are planned and filled by company commander, 1SG, PSG, or section leaders is a unit level decision. If your in a unit that does not allow any NCO input into the company training calendar, ask your self WHY? Is the company commander not allowed any non BN. BDE planned training? If he is allowed company planned time... WHY is he not seeking NCO input into what? Once you understand the WHY you can make a plan to affect it. ....or perhaps accept it's not there it be used at the company level

SGM Erik Marquez Totally agree. I would like to add to your list with that a lot of the authority NCOs lost is because NCOs let the Os take it.

SGM Steve Wettstein - lot of the authority NCOs lost is because NCOs let the Os take it.

DING DING DING.. we have a winner....... Use it wisely, effectively and in support of the commanders intent or lose it... SGM, that was part of my pointing of finding out WHY.. It may end in the self discovery that,, the commander no longer respects or trusts the NCO's to use the training time allotted them wisely
(SGT, why are your Soldiers in their rooms at 10am on a playstation when the BN CSM walked though barracks today? .. SGT, why are you in the plt office drinking coffee when you SM are in the back yard doing crew drills?, SGT I was just in the MP...spent more then an hour with your plt talking about the maintenance they were trying to perform on their vehicles.....WITH NO SUPERVISION, ASSISTANCE, LEADERSHIP......)

We still dedicate Thursdays for S.T.T. in my unit. It starts at P.T. and goes until C.O.B., the tasks to be trained on is chosen by the Section Chief based off of the performance of his section or any upcoming training we have projected. I believe our 1SG went to bat for the NCOs after the Chiefs stated they would like more one on one time to train their Soldiers. I don't believe our power base has been taken away, because we as NCOs have a primary responsibility to train our Soldiers and as long as we continue to do just that we will have time alloted to us. If we blink and take a knee during that time it will surely be taken away.

Agreed SGM. There is such a saturation of tasks that the meat and potatoes of what a soldier needs dissipates overtime. It's just a trickle affect downhill from there.

Every minute of the day is "Sergeants Time". You have 24 hours to work with today. Tomorrow you get to start over with another 24 hours.....the good thing is you get to repeat the cycle everyday as long as you wear the uniform.....use the time wisely. NCO's don't need a stage to make things happen.sssssSergeant

Yes to this. Anytime you are around others who also wear a uniform is a time for mentoring and training, regardless of whether or not that time has been alloyed specifically for "training".

Power is generally taken, not given. The biggest factors seem to be the amount of responsibility you are willing to take, and your level of competence. I've seen SPC's who were more powerful within the unit than their senior leaders, and I've seen senior leaders who were functionally irrelevant. Rank is one thing, but the person underneath means so much more...

Speaking in general, in almost every job you take you can expand your responsibilities and power as much as your supervisors and time allows. However, you can also be checked hard and have you power stripped tremendously.

CPT Mark Gonzalez - True enough. Politics and personal dynamics will always be a variable in any organization staffed by humans...
