I have 9 months left of my 6 year reserve drilling. With 2 more years IRR. I will be attending a six month police academy soon and not be able to attend drill. Should I ask to go IRR early or general discharge? I would graduate the same month my drilling would end. Any advice is appreciated as most of my unit NCOs are not very helpful unless your a favorite. Thanks!

Do not ask for a general discharge when you have 9 months left. If you want to hang it up that's fine, but just make up the drill days now so you fulfill your service obligations and you can go to the police academy no problem. It's a win on both fronts. Might as well get that pay too

A few questions: What are your long term plans regarding the military? Do you have any thoughts of 20 years or are you done? This would make a difference. If you plan on doing 20 then I would suggest going to your command and request an alternative drilling. Most reserve and NG units will work with you in this regard.

Talk to the full time folks at your unit (Unit Administrator or AGR) and ask to RST the next few months drills from Monday-Friday until the Academy starts. Surely they have some work at the Reserve Center that needs to be done. (RST is Rescheduled Training) or ask to go IRR earlier if that won't work with your current work schedule. My daughter is about to report to the Police Academy and all she is doing is hitting the gym. Do not take the general discharge route. Best of Luck!
