When you wear your "I SERVED" bold yellow letters on black hat and a "Spartan Helmet/Moron Labia/Sheepdog/Dysfunctional Veteran" T shirt and harass and harangue the poor girl working at an American Eagle counter because AE doesn't have an optional Veteran/military Discount policy. When you get loud and your rotund wife wearing a Garfield T shirt, greasy sweatpants and a pair of jelly sandals starts barking out loud and holding up the line of other shoppers to demand to see the Manager for that Veteran/Military discount.
That's an example I've personally seen of people being dishonorable about an OPTIONAL discount practice.

SGT Ben Keen - I disagree with giving 1LT (Join to see) such "notoriety" (satirical or not) for his opinion. I explain my opinion above.

I was born and raised in the US Army. At the age of 18 I returned to the Post I was born on to begin BCT. I served for 22 years on active duty then retired. I have never used any type of Veterans discount. I do not wear any Veterans clothing.

SSG David Curran so all the younger veterans who support Grunt Style, and other veteran owned companies are not ‘true brothers/sisters in arms’?
Huh.. I usually go by how they act, not what they wear. Kinda like with you. I wouldn’t call you a ‘brother in arms’, nor the douchebag LT who posted the original post.
Talk about a bunch of buddy fuckers..

1SG (Join to see) I ask for Veteran Discount/Senior discount. If they provide it, fine, if not, I pay without a word of complaint. I have not witnessed anyone asking for the discount, and being rude or disrespectful when it was not offered.

CMSgt (Join to see) in my situation it was a reflection on the employee for lying. As I said even when the manager found out who is also a veteran here for upset I was lied to.

SPC Nancy Greene - That is sooooooo true. Sometimes I say Teachers deserve Hazardous duty Pay, because they have to do a lot with so little, and the very diisrepectful.

Totally correct answer. It is nice to receive the discount but don't be a jerk if you do not get it.

SFC Michael D. - The HEB grocery store near me also has veteran parking spots.

PO3 Michael MacKay -
Harris teeter here in North Carolina has them. I'm disabled and the veteran spots are near the door. I use it instead of the Handicapped Spots and let someone else use them. It amazes me how many "veterans: use the spots. It irks me to see some of them who are obviously not veterans. The same with the Handicapped spots. They're for the disabled. If the disabled is not in the car you don't get to use the placard when you're by yourself. Or they let momma out to shop (This is a notorious problem at COSTCO) then sit in the space for an hour or more waiting for her. They could just as easily drive around to get her from a non-reserved space. I said something to a woman once who took every item out of her buggy and wiped it off with a disinfectant spray and rag and then cleaned the inside of her car while she was at it. Meanwhile people are driving around looking for a Handicapped spot. I asked her if she knew that the She got most most indignant about it. Of course she wasn't the disabled person.

PO2 Robert Cuminale - I am as well disabled, don't get around like I used to, but I am the same, I never used the handicapped back when they allowed veterans in my category to use the HC spaces. I use the Veteran parking if it is available, but if I have the opportunity to give the space up to an older person who is a veteran I do it...it is ther for respect and I respect those who went before me enough to show it.

The operative word is "optional". Managers usually do not have the luxury of being able to adjust corporate policy. Some of us meet almost every criteria for some "optional" discount a store is nice enough to give. Thank you is a good thing to say right after the affirmation of availability. Being a jackass in public does not help the rest of us.
