When you wear your "I SERVED" bold yellow letters on black hat and a "Spartan Helmet/Moron Labia/Sheepdog/Dysfunctional Veteran" T shirt and harass and harangue the poor girl working at an American Eagle counter because AE doesn't have an optional Veteran/military Discount policy. When you get loud and your rotund wife wearing a Garfield T shirt, greasy sweatpants and a pair of jelly sandals starts barking out loud and holding up the line of other shoppers to demand to see the Manager for that Veteran/Military discount.
That's an example I've personally seen of people being dishonorable about an OPTIONAL discount practice.

Sgt J Sanborn remember the ACTUAL Bible verse in which the Creator of the universe said "if a man doesn't work, neither should he eat"? I remember it.

Had a rifted CPT who did not turn in his ID card. He got caught finally at the check out. Commissary officer came up to him and said if I ever see you again I am calling the MPs. I know because I was banging his ex girlfriend. A united first class stew. fort ord california 1981.

Asking is one thing, demanding is another. I used to work at the VA Hospital and everyone that was there waiting to be seen was a Vet. I would try to wait to be seen on a first come first serve basis like everyone else during my lunch break, but almost every time, without fail someone would be yelling at the Nurse at the counter that they should not have to wait! I could not get over the arrogance and sense of entitlement. Behavior like that dishonors our brothers and sisters actively serving as well as Veterans.

I don't ask for a discount as a veteran. I distrust the VA and will never darken their doors again after the way they screwed with me in their admin section. When I applied on line, a Mr. Carter from the Houston VA called me and asked if I had been exposed to Agent Orange in Vietnam and said that I had checked the box on the online form? I said no that I had been on an aircraft carrier in the Tonkin Gulf at the time. So I checked the saved copy of the form I submitted to the VA. No question on Agent Orange. A week later he calls me again with the same stupid question. I set him straight on that one. Later the VA admin started screwing with me on a non stop basis saying I lied about my income on the online form. I checked the saved copy again and it matched what the IRS provided them. I had enough of them and said to "Hell with the VA."

1SG John Furr I ask for Veteran Discount/Senior discount. If they provide it, fine, if not, I pay without a word of complaint. I have not witnessed anyone asking for the discount, and being rude or disrespectful when it was not offered.

Chief, One old timer to another, Fair Winds and Following Seas. I remember the 70's. No money, (training wise), No respect, (War's Over, Soldiers, Sailors and Dogs KEEP OFF THE GRASS!), Low pay, but (WE SERVED and Honorably and Well), with nary a thought to discounts. Seems that the shame of how the previous Veterans were treated came home to roost in the conscience, and is a way to ease the guilt. I appreciate the discounts offered, I don't consider them entitlements, but a small reward and a way to say Thank You. If and when they end, they just end. I'm THANKFUL that our Nation and it's inhabitants NOW realize that THOSE WHO SERVE(D) deserve respect and courtesies. And an acknowledgement of their sacrifices.

CPO William Rys - POVs are no longer issued base access stickers. Somebody submitted a suggestion and the person was paid a handsome sum of money for it.

The last time I was in the local Hardys ( and the last time I'll patronize them) I noticed the window sized poster "We support our Veterans" with a flowing stars and strips. When I said I was a veteran I was informed the discount is already included in the price, for everyone. It disturbs me when people and businesses wrap themselves in the flag of patriotism as a ploy to get more business.

I made $ 78.00 a month. There was no such thing as a military discount.Any discount offered by a merchant, senior ,military or others, will not kill their profit margin.Plus, many take pride in offering.Take the discount, enjoy it,and don't forget to thank them.

It's overplayed when you think it's an entitlement.

CWO4 David M - I'll tell you one thing about Lowes. In San Antonio, they have Veteran only parking spaces. I was so proud of them for doing that. I have never see that at any other store.
