MSG Jasin Jones 901301

Quick Question,

So here is the situation. I am currently deployed to Iraq with the 82nd ABN DIV, a Soldier from the 513th MI BDE deployed to Kuwait is up in Iraq helping us for 30 days. Since his unit is not authorized a Combat Patch based on AR 670-1 Para 21-17…“(16) Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR): between 15 June 2014 and a date to be determined, for Soldiers deployed to Iraq, Jordan, or Syria in support of OIR, who received combat zone tax exclusion and hostile fire/IDP as identified by CENTCOM Command Center-Joint Staff for Personnel and Administration. Soldiers who were deployed in the area of operations on training exercises or in support of operations other than OIR are not authorized the SSI-FWTS, unless those exercises or operations became combat or support missions to OIR”. However, it does say “(d) Individual Soldiers who are attached (to include OPCON, cross-leveled, assigned, or augmenting deployed units) will wear the same SSI-FWTS worn by members of the deployed Army unit (company or higher) to which attached by written orders.

Without a clear definition of “OPCON, cross-leveled, assigned, or augmenting deployed units” I am a bit confused. So how do you read between these lines? Since his unit is not “in theater” his command is not authorized one. But since he is simply TDY into county to support and not on official attachment orders he does not fall into any of the aforementioned categories.

I have a feeling a simply set of 30 day attachment orders would make this legit and he could wear the 82nd Patch.

How do you all read it? The TDY orders may be enough, if they say something to the effect of Temporary Duty in Taji/Baghdad in support of the 82nd BCT. Or like LTC Tongret said, just have S-1 type up an attachment or order/amend the 1610 to reflect. Hull 1104218

it happens, not right but for some reason personnel attached to other units are forgotten, the attached unit thinks the home unit will handle the paper work. The home unit dose not know what is going on so the awards or combat credit falls to the way side. One time I was told you where TDY so you where not there, so you are not qualified to any thing the unit got. Response by SFC Douglas B.
