Benghazi, and The Forgotten

What happened in Benghazi is an aggravation, ‘a craw in our side’, with many veterans still today. It is a sad story of Americans being abandoned by their nation, and it’s unfortunately been used by many politicians for political gain. Excuses were made to explain what happened and to somewhat justify it. Both Republicans and Democrats distort the facts during TV appearances and hearings. But the damage to those left behind - the families and survivors - seems forgotten, without explanation.

Many Americans don’t even understand what these men and women went through - they were living in hell for the thirteen hours preceding the final assault and the evacuation from the CIA annex. Many incorrectly think that the four Americans - Ambassador Stevens, Sean Smith, Tyrone Woods, and Glen Doherty - died during the initial assault on the U.S. Diplomatic Compound. There was actually four separate attacks; the first attack on the compound and then three more on the CIA annex where everyone fled to after the first assault. Also, ten others were injured in these attacks. The compound was not an embassy, which means that it didn’t have the normal security detail or bunkering/protections that an American Embassy has. Only five diplomatic security special agents were in Benghazi at the time of the attack; two of them were there by chance, having traveled with Ambassador Stevens from Tripoli. One mile away, a CIA team at the annex was the quick reaction force for the compound, but no one was supposed to know that the CIA security team existed.

Ambassador Stevens was adored by many Libyans and had a great fondness for the country. He felt he could make a difference in the lives of those in Libya, and wanted to show the people that the United States stood behind them in establishing a new democracy. Eastern Libya, Benghazi in particular, was a key hub for intelligence operatives monitoring Ansar al-Sharia and members of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. Along with Ambassador Stevens, Secretary of State Clinton also wanted a more permanent post in Benghazi.

There was quite a bit of instability in the region prior to the attacks of September 11, 2012. There was frequent IED-related violence. The International Red Cross office in Libya was attacked and there was an assassination attempt on Dominic Asquith, the British ambassador. Requests were made for more security, but according to the regional security officer, Eric Nordstrom, they were rebuffed. Nordstrom told media that, for him and his staff, “it was abundantly clear that [they] were not going to get resources until the aftermath of an incident.” Lt. Col Andrew Wood, U.S. site security commander in Libya, testified that a regional security officer had tried obtaining more personnel, but was never able to attain a level of security that he felt comfortable with. It was pretty well known within the American intelligence community during the months preceding the attack that Benghazi was unstable and increasingly dangerous - and that a significant attack was imminent.

Top U.S. officials reported the attack as if it had been a spontaneous protest created by an anti-Muslim video...yet there were no such protests immediately prior to the attacks. There was, however, every indication that everything was premeditated. The assault began at nightfall, by militants swathed in flak jackets with covered faces. They were armed with RPGs, hand grenades, AK-47s, mortars, and machine guns. With that level of artillery, it’s quite apparent that this was not a spontaneous protest.

But for some reason...that is what we were supposed to believe.

Ambassador Stevens and State Department information management officer, Sean Smith - an Air Force veteran, died during the initial assault on the compound. The Global Response Staff team, which included former SEAL Tyrone Woods, left the CIA annex approximately twenty minutes later as the Quick Reaction Force in order to aid and/or rescue everyone at the compound. The Quick Reaction Force evacuated everyone from the compound to the CIA annex where they began preparing for potential continuing assaults.

In the ensuing hours, attacks continued as they bunkered at the CIA annex waiting for reinforcements or rescue. Meanwhile another former Navy SEAL, Glen Doherty, and six other men (five CIA operatives and two volunteer Delta operators) gathered at the Tripoli Embassy preparing to mount a rescue - 406 miles away from Benghazi. Since this was not a planned evacuation or rescue attempt by U.S. leadership, they had to figure some way to get to Benghazi. They somehow garnered $30,000 and, with a little persuasion of a couple of Libyan military pilots, they got them to fly from the airport in Tripoli to Benghazi.

At the Benghazi airport, they met up with supportive Libyan troops who took the team of seven men to the CIA annex. Upon arrival, Glen Doherty met Tyrone Woods on the roof of the annex. Within minutes, mortars were fired and both were mortally wounded - two more Americans killed in Benghazi within hours. After this final assault, everyone remaining was transported to the Benghazi airport with the help of the same Libyan troops who assisted Glen Doherty and his team.

The whole incident is very disappointing to me, and something I will never forget. We, as Airmen, Soldiers, Marines and Sailors, exist under an oath stating that we will “never leave our brothers and sisters behind”... but these people were left to die. They were left alone - abandoned by the administration, Congress, and in a sense, by their country. Their families also seemed to be forgotten as they never received any explanation regarding this incident. The names of everyone else who had been in Benghazi were also quickly forgotten. It seemed as though many Americans heard enough and didn’t want the truth regardless of the facts...and still don’t. Overall, the incidents that day were incredibly tragic, and I will continue to hope that someday everyone will have the answers they need!

Benghazi became a hashtag and the story became peppered with half-truths and outright lies. It wasn't long before the word served only to rile up one side with one political agenda and cause eye rolls in others who had heard lie after lie.

Meanwhile, the victims of the tragedy can become forgotten along with the truth.

The saddest part is the families of all the Benghazi victims will never have full closure. Knowing more could have and should have been done. I personally still blame the Administration and especially Secretary Clinton for these deaths. No one will ever convince me otherwise.

At what point do we accept and move on? If you want answers, then read the reports generated by the 8 investigations, most of them by Congressional Committees. All of the investigations came to the same conclusions, specifically that there was no "Stand Down" order, Sec Clinton, and the rest of the Administration, were not at fault, there was no military element that was close enough to help, and if one had been sent, it would not have arrived in time to save anyone.

Stop bringing up questions that have already been answered. Oh, this is one veteran who is not "haunted" by Benghazi any more than he is by the deaths of any American at the hands of the enemy, including the 4,000+ Soldiers, Marines, Airmen and Sailors killed in an illegal war. Funny how nobody seems to care about that.

If I remember correctly a couple of months ago I saw an interview with Tyrone Wood's mother who said Hillary when she met with them after the attack said that she would be in contact with them at a latter time with more complete information. That was the last they ever heard from her in spite of attempts to contact her since then.

Sad but very true statement. What if it was the President of the United States or the State Department Secretary? Watching the movie and reading the book has too many versions of what took place and especially what didn't. I can give you many more reasons why we shouldn't be getting involved with other foreign Countries if our military services and or our own political system don't work. Benghazi is not forgotten by me. Politicians have attempted to use it for political purposes, which should be no surprise. Politicians have a tendency to think they are more important than anyone else, and anything that offers them more power, or at least another term in office is an acceptable reason to use it.

But I CAN NOT ABIDE flat out lying to the American people. Hillary Clinton is right up there with Jane Fonda, a bitch who will use, abuse, and sell out anyone and anything to advance her personal agenda. I hope both of them see the faces of those they betrayed and hear the cries of the mothers, wives, and children they left behind in their nightmares for the rest of time.

It would be very interesting to learn ALL the real truths. What was the CIA working on? Who leaked the info on the manpower at that location, and why was there no immediate air and ground support, for our personnel? The lies on the whole situation seemed to snowball into more lies and coverups by Hillary Clinton, and others in that administration. It is a shame to see what this country is becoming. Sad choices for our Presidential candidates, acting like grade schoolers, brought me back to my days in 3rd and 4th grade, in NJ. It is not necessary for me to try and imagine what it must have been like to be there. I know what it is like to be totally helpless and surrounded by the enemy and far out numbered. I also know what it feels like to cry out for help, reinforcements, air support, artillery support and more and know that you calls will be heard and heeded. "Here comes the cavalry" so to speak. Those men and women were Americans, doing the business of America, trusting their government to come to their aid. But that did not happen. H Clinton showed her true colors during this event. I try not to get too political but my stomach turns at the thought of what happened in those couple days. A decision was made to abandon our men and women who were directly in harms way for the benefit of America. They were not there to improve their lot in life. They had a mission and were attempting to carry out that mission to the best of their ability. I know that they made the same commitment that the rest of have, that is, we wrote a blank check payable to the people of the United States in an amount of up to and including our very life. The situation in Benghazi was one that put America to the test of standing up for her citizen. It was within the power of several cabinet level department to take action to at least attempt to rescue these brave men and women. Think about and remember the SEAL team members that heard about the situation in Benghazi and, without awaiting orders (which would not have been forthcoming) voluntarily showed up body and soul to do everything humanly possible, at the risk of life, to rescue total strangers, fellow Americans facing certain assassination. All the men and women to have lost their lives must always, each and every one, be remembered. The courage under fire on display those three days goes as far above and beyond that is humanly possible. Yet, we, the American people, as represented by the cowards in Washington, turned our backs, threw up our collective hands and declared "Nothing we can do to help them." If it would have been at all possible I would have armed myself with my own (legal) weapons and ammunition and joined as many other of my brothers and sisters and responded from my home. Get us there and we are all in. In Vietnam there were a number of small unit that became separated from parent units only to become ...... well we all know. I am sure that scene has repeated in the wars of the 21st century as well.

I am still enraged by the response of Washington.
I can only add on last statement:

I don't think there will ever be a full accounting. The fear is that it would cause such embarrassment and perhaps legal problems for the former Sec of State and President. Nothing is as important to these people as their political positions and ambitions. It has been evident for 8 years that the military was just a pawn in a poorly played chess game.

This entire affair - whatever one chooses to believe - was a cluster f*ck - perhaps motivated in part by the principal's engagement in a mission for the central intelligence agency. What can we do to close out this matter - to give these men and their families some measure of peace? Both parties, as noted by Sergeant Borders, have used this incident to gain political capital. The Democrats to stay in power and avoid impeachment or other prosecution, and the Republicans to attack the DNC.

The problem for me is that these good men and their long-suffering families are not at rest.

My war was Vietnam, I was in the Infantry. We were pretty much by the book accept when some action was clearly identified as bullshit, which this Benghazi thing was from step-off to evacuation.

We were trying to dislodge a VC or NVA 50 caliber on a 200 meter hill surrounded by elephant grass. We weren't making much progress because every time we close, they'd open up. We couldn't get air. We got a chopper in and off it stepped a shiny, new Lieutenant. He got briefed by the Sr. NCOs and people who had been trying to get the machine gun.

Nodding his head crisply he said, "OK. We are going to mount a frontal assault led by our M-60, flanked by four automatic riflemen."

Well, we hadn't tried that yet.

A grunt from the South Bronx stood up and said "Here's your '60 Lieutenant," throwing it at him with 100 rounds in it, the Lieutenant caught it chest-high, "and what kind of lowers do you want cause I ain't goin'."

Whether all that was right or wrong is debatable, but the 60 gunner was chastised and we developed a different plan. Eventually we got arty and counted six KIA.

All that tells me that this Benghazi tragedy is one where someone needed to act, out of bounds and off the books, whatever, to save those men. To not do that, in this case, puts regulations, politics, etc. in a position of greater importance than the men or the mission.

As SFC Dave Beran, SFC George Smith, and others mentioned, the finger of responsibility points to the top.

Interesting that none of the blame for to the members of Congress who denied funding for more security. Not exonerating Hillary or Obama… but spread the blame accordingly.

If people would stop and think, just a little, it would help all around. Did anyone ever hear of setting up an Embassy without first establishing a total security for the entire crew that are going to go in harms way. That is always the way it is supposed to work, however Ambassador Stevens had verbally stated he want to get there as soon as possible to meet the local people immediately. He should never had been allowed to go till full security was establish for entry, operations and evacuation. Check the records, it is all documented in black on white. There was no reason for any of those to be there at the time the disaster took place.

I know that I was disappointed when I heard that they had been killed and how. I guess I thought the USA was better than that. I always felt it was mostly the President, and he got off from most of the blame. He was running for re-election and claiming he defeated ISIS as part of it. Having a terror attack a few months before the election totally undermined that theme. So they made a story up about a youtube video causing it, sent out false stories to the press, put a guy in jail as part of the cover, made TV commercials apologizing for the video overseas. It just demonstrates the problem with both sides in politics and their followers. Either side can do almost anything, and half the country will blindly follow them, and half will scream. In the end, one side believes nothing wrong was done, the other says its a cover up. People need to stop viewing life through their political parties glasses, and look at real life. The reality here is, it seems there was some kind of illegal arms deal going on in the end like Iran/Contra, and it suffered a terror attack while it was going on. The administration felt the best course of action was to let them all be pawns in a political chess game and let them die to save other players.

How would they know where the CIA complex is? That is a confidential area. Won't comment on what happened, as we all know these folks were let down. I will say, however, that this one hit home personally for me. Sean Smith was a coworker when this happened. He and I were assigned to the U.S. Embassy in The Hague, Netherlands. Sean was merely TAD to Benghazi to fill in a gap; he was supposed to return home in two weeks. It was particularly painful to see his wife in the days after.

I am in no way a fan but I am unable to connect those dots, and I was as close to the events as anyone without being there physically (disclosure - I was the watch officer).

So let me ask you a couple of things:
- who decided to leave Tripoli without informing those of us for whom that knowledge would have meant something? Hillary or Chris?
- who decided to leave his security detail behind, again? Hillary or Chris?
- what resources existed that could have responded, because believe me, we went through every possible straw that could be grasped?
- or are you one of those that believe launching an unarmed F-16 from Aviano with no refueling capability somehow would have helped?
- 29000 Army soldiers in EUCOM at the time, 400 in AFRICOM.
- more than one special operations unit in EUCOM at the time, none in AFRICOM.
- Even if you had a mechanism to trigger the transfer of these units instantaneously, how do you solve the time distance reality of geography?

I have a long list of issues I will lay at the feet of senior leaders, particularly civilian elected officials, Benghazi and the deaths of these Americans isn't one.

The question still remains... who gave the stand-down order to the on-sight CIA Section Chief?
The very notion that there was "no" stand-down order, suggests that the heroes that finally left , took it upon themselves to wait 30 minutes (even though several calls were received telling them the dire straights the US Embassy personnel were in) before heading out to the Consulate Compound. If no order to "not go" was never given, then why did the ones who finally went lose their jobs and their security clearances? The attack of the USS Liberty is a far larger forgotten tragedy and national disgrace of a cover-up. Many Americans don’t know anything of the incident or that it even took place.

We (US Gov/Mil) also knowingly left tens of thousands of American warriors in Stalin's hands following WWII, and hundreds more during the Korean War and Cold War. I remember that story reigniting 25 year ago shortly following the collapse of the USSR when Russia released a group of 80 surviving Japanese POWs from WWII in 1992; almost 50 years after the end of hostilities.

How many Americans were left behind after we pulled out of Vietnam?

In all reality, while Benghazi is a more recent event, it really is just a very minor blip on our extensive national history of leaving our warriors behind and in my mind does not rise to anywhere near the same level as previous events. And like the earlier events, I expect things to be swept under the rug, lost to history, and otherwise classified and hidden from public disclosure until the nation can once again falsely claim: "it was real terrible what those other people who are all dead did back then, but this is now and we don't do that any more" (as the next event gets swept under the rug too).

I tend to also have more heartburn over the thousand of forgotten veterans throughout America continuing to be neglected by the system and left to die (or kill themselves), than the 4 (8) victims of Benghazi. But then I just watched "Thank You for Your Service" this evening so all that and memories of brothers-in-arms who are no longer with us are fresh in my mind...

Really the saddest part is the secretary of state (Clinton), chose to not have the military forces that could reach the CIA Annex. Second when they became aware of the attack they sat on their hands trying to decide what uniforms were to be worn enabling the rioters to Murder the Ambassador and those n his charge. Another "forgotten incident" is that of the USS Liberty (GTR-5) which was deliberately attacked on June 8, 1967 by our "ally", Israel, with the loss of 34 sailors' lives. The "cover-up" continues to this very day.

Benghazi will be long remembered as dereliction of duty and the ensuing cover-up by the highest levels of government. The fact that an American Ambassador and 3 others died is sad, but Americans die every day and in less heroic situations than this.
General Carter Ham was relieved of command for attempting to send in reinforcements. There was cover-up by then Secretary of State Clinton - by cover-up, I mean outright lies. There was the Susan Rice “Lie to the Media” circuit in which she went on 5 consecutive programs feeding the same line intended to deceive the American people.
All of this was done to protect the re-election of Barack Hussein Obama less than 60 days after the attack. Their personal political motive in lying to the American people is why the stench of Benghazi will be in nostrils of American Patriots until that Administration is dead and buried.

America is not to blame for this travesty or is it? We allow our political system and those we entrust in Congress and the Executive Branch the ability to govern without responsibility. These same politicians are too secure in the positions they hold. Many has asked; how do we rid ourselves of such cowardly representation? The only answer to that particular question must come from each and every American. How are we to expect change when these same inefficient politicians continue to get reelected? Who is the blame? The blame falls entirely upon each and every voting American.
With all the information thus far provided by numerous individuals and organizations, we know support and assistance was available and those in government opted to ignore the plea for help. Now the biggest question of all must be who, if anyone will be brought before a Grand Jury to answer for this outrage? Our Justice system has been tainted for the last eight years so it’s expectant nothing will be done and no one will be held fully accountable. Instead, these same politicians will continue their self-appointed political careers making unreasonable, unethical decisions causing more damage and perhaps even more deaths.
We will never see justice for these four men, but we can as voters, show these same politicians out the door by enforcing term limits, refusing to reelect them to office. We must turn away from the old political guard in order to elect more vibrant, conscience and dedicated individuals to office. Newer, younger faces bring newer changes. If elected their changes can be no worse then what this old political guard has imposed upon America. Once and for all take a stand and let your conscience be your guide.

Great article covering and honoring the people there and to their families. But in short the President and especially State Department dropped the ball, then tried to cover it up during hearings. I still recall Hilary's comment, "what does it matter now" or some what close to this quote. You were good until about the fifth paragraph. There WAS an initial assessment that preliminarily concluded it was a spontaneous protest. And it turned out not to be the case. And on this point seems to rest the whole conspiracy. Really does it matter?

And about then I stop reading. Especially with the statement "nothing will change my mind". Cause it usually degrades into an argument that the state Dept wanted their ambassador dead. That's a stretch.

Some of us will never forget Benghazi or how poorly the whole thing was handled leading up to and through the attack that dreadful night. There are too many holes in the official story and the surviving eye witnesses were barred from ever speaking about it through non-disclosure statements they were forced to sign right after their rescue. The few warriors who did tell their side, have never changed their story so I give more credence to what they say, than I do to anyone from the last administration involved and almost no credence to those on MSM, who all were hot and heavy to run with the lie, that it was all over a anti-muslim parody video and who still kept trying to peddle that lie, despite the evidence proving otherwise. I never took an Oath to never leave anyone behind. This a MARINE tradition. That has bled into the other services. And is not followed by every unit and every group of soldiers. While I was in Iraq, we were on patrol, when another vehicle was hit by an IED, and my squad leader refused to go in and back them up. I quote: "I am not driving into an ambush". So, yeah that is not a real thing.

Finally, none of these men, are SOLDIERS, AIRMAN, MARINES, or SAILORS, they were private contractor's and FSO's.

I for one, hate private contractor's fuck them. They have no place in our battlefield, they are unregulated and irresponsible. If they need QRF, they should have private contractor's doing QRF.

Franklin Graham jumped into attacking Senator Feinstein during an interview, (see video below) saying they (the Democrats) are pulling a fast one at the last minute with what sounds to me like he is angry because the Republicans all but had the nominee they wanted.
Graham’s easy dismissal or minimizing an alleged attempted rape charge of rape (something he did some 40 years ago) against a nominee to the highest court carries disturbing implications for our democracy..something he did as a teenager…
Evangelical Christian leaders have a moral responsibility to condemn Graham’s response regarding it doesn’t count, cause Kavanaugh did “this as a teenager.”
Wait a minute!
Next Graham goes on to say Kavanaugh has not been a criminal since his teenage years.
“They (aka liberal who support a woman’s right to choose) could not find anything else in his record, so this is just an attempt to smear him.
What? Everyone has the right to be heard when they have been the victim of an attempted rape.
All honorable leaders have an ethical responsibility to condemn these remarks by Graham.

Reports surfaced from a former Navy Seal present in Benghazi that those on the ground in Benghazi sent an urgent request from the CIA annex for military back-up during the attack on the U.S. consulate. Those requests were denied by U.S. officials, who told the CIA operators twice to “stand down” rather than help the ambassador’s team. They were told to “stand down,” according to sources familiar with the exchange. Soon after, they were again told to “stand down.” That former Seal and at least two others ignored those orders and made their way to the consulate which at that point was on fire. The information I heard was that General Ham as head of Africom received the same e-mails the White House received requesting help/support as the attack was taking place. General Ham immediately had a rapid response unit ready and communicated to the Pentagon that he had a unit ready.
General Ham then received the order to stand down. His response was to screw it, he was going to help anyhow. Within 30 seconds to a minute after making the move to respond, his second in command apprehended General Ham and told him that he was now relieved of his command.
Navy Rear Admiral, former commander of the USS John Stennis Strike Group, Rear Admiral Charles Gaouette was also mysteriously relieved of duty, and all the brass will say is he is “under investigation” for, get this, “inappropriate leadership judgment.”
Just another way of saying that the admiral dared differ with the Administration’s Libya policy and perhaps openly defied Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. So, Yes....Yes it was political, and the Obama administration was DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE. EVERY.SINGLE.ONE.OF.THEM.

Some of us who worked in certain positions know of the truth - the full truth! This was a total case of direliction of duty by Obama and Clinton, and a case of obstruction of justice when they not only tried to craft a BS scenario about a video being the cause of an uproar leading to the attack - but it was also a conspiracy to commit a cover up as well. Then you add in Hillary entering a SCIF multiple times with an unauthorized flash drive to illegally downloading Top Secret and Secret and Confidential classified information multiple times, and then illegally removing the information from the SCIF and illegally transporting the information on an unauthorized medium - and then illegally storing the unauthorized medium with classified information in her home and later illegally uploading the classified information from the unauthorized medium (flash drive) to her personal computer in her home basement which is not authorized or cleared by security to store classified information... and then to top it all off - she e-mailed the classified information multiple times to people not authorized to receive it which was later shared with foreign state actors and also her computer was hacked by foreign state actors in which they obtained the classified information stored on her computer. Perhaps this was her intent all along!

As a Counterintelligence (CI) Special Agent - these are the kind of crimes that not only warrant an investigation, but would lead to immediate criminal charges on multiple counts and would have certainly led to an indictment. People who have committed much less only one time have been charged with much more! Here's the real kicker... there are no statute of limitations on these crimes! The only way Hillary escapes this:

1.) Free pass by the President and Justice Department... which would set a bad legal precedent for those who commit similar or less crimes like Hillary in the future.

2.) Flee to a non-extradition country.

3.) Plead guilty and negotiate a plea deal to receive a reduced sentence.

4.) Pass away before charges can be brought forth against her.

So, if people wonder why she should never serve as Commander-in-Chief... I hope people now realize that the crimes she committed were deliberate, with forethought, with intent, by deception and without regard to the national security and defense of our country.

The question I have is this... if any federal agent has the authority to conduct an arrest based on the probable cause that a crime has occured in violation of the U.S. Code - then why didn't the U.S. Diplomatic Security Service or U.S. Secret Service arrest Hillary and join the FBI along with the Department of Defense (since some classified information contained DoD material) in conducting a criminal investigation to obtain and present evidence of her criminal actions? I guess since Obama was the President - these agencies as being within the executive branch were likely ordered by Obama that Hillary was not to be touched. Just look at how former FBI Director Comey and former AG Lynch crafted - or should I say "repeated" a ridiculous narrative (likely scripted by Obama and the White House) in order to ensure Hillary was let off the hook. Makes you wonder if Hillary had something on Obama and threatened to release information on him if she were to be investigated, indicted and arrested!

I have spoke with other agents within the FBI, DSS, USSS and DoD - all agree that she should have been arrested and sent to prison, and some agents that are still active are waiting for the greenlight to arrest her. The families of Benghazi may one day finally have their justice if Hillary is finally sent to prison for her crimes.

I had the honor of being invited to the premiere of “13 Hours” in Dallas and got the opportunity to speak with Tyrone Woods’ mother the evening before at a social function. She of course was still grieving but staying strong, reassured by the fact that because of the book, film, and those of us in the community sharing the story of their sacrifice that his loss was not in vain. I have both Congress’s Report on this and DNC. They both state that The President ordered troops to be sent in then Obama left the room Cliton held off. The map of where troops were didn’t include Navy Ships, unless this is the first time in 200 years we didn’t have ships in the Med. (getting me to believe that is going to be hard) An Amphibious Readiness Group usually consists of 3-4 ships with some 4000 Marines onboard. Why weren’t they used. The rescue would make the military look good.

The whole episode of Benghazi is one that I will never forget! It was Hillary Rodham Clinton's watch and as Secretary of state at the time, she failed to do the right thing by the people she was responsible for... Especially Ambassador Stevens, Sean Smith - who died during the initial assault on the U.S. Diplomatic Compound. Our then President, and Secretary of State initially reported that it was because of a video! HA! no video, just dereliction of duty! It truly saddens me that our leaders at that time distanced themselves from the atrocities, failed to give the order to bring in our forces who were, in fact reported to be within reasonable time & flying distance to have affected a possible different ending... I believe part of the problem with Benghazi is nobody took any responsibility, including the military. I believe Secretary Clinton and the Administration bears part of the responsibility, but so does the Joint Chiefs and unit commanders in Italy. I have read much of their testimony and it distinctly seems like they lacked the fortitude to act, when they clearly should have. The worst part is the Congress never held anyone responsible. I understand that they may not have authorization, however, the very first thing I was taught as an NCO was to think. If something sounds wrong, illegal, or immoral than don't just do it blindly. Standing and not assisting where possible. They may not have been able to bomb or attack, but just the mere presence of air assets may have been enough to give the Annex breathing room and saved lives. I also understand they may have been fired or worse, but I would rather sleep in a jail cell than live with the fact I choose not to help when I could/should have.

When the Tripoli counsulate was attacked, President Obama didn't send any assistance to protect Ambassador Stevens. A small detail of security can't fight off 40 -100 attackers, with limited weapons and ammunition. Isn't a counselate soverign property of the nation that it represents? 2 Americans, including Ambassador Stevens died in the counsulate grounds. The CIA annex, doing the intelligence work for our country, was an annex of the counsulate. Americans with Libiyan assests, gathering intel and buying weapons, that were sold to Quadaffi, seized by mobs of Libiyan terrorists to gain control of the country or liberate it. What did Mr. Obama and then Department of State Secretary Hillary Clinton think? Aren't American lives worth saving from armed "protesters". The last sitting POTUS (Carter) face the same situation in Iran, back in 1979? We lost 8 good American soldiers in the attempt to rescue embassy personnel, but at least they tried. USSOCOM now has assets close by countries where countries are likely to errupt into radical chaos, threaten our embassies, counsulate and annexs and the American lives who work there. Those assets, in a short time could deploy to defend the embassies and personnel. That's part of their mandates. Let us not forget the Benghazi Four. Let us also remember that they had families, that they will never grow old with any more. Remember, it is better to do something, than do nothing. Remember Benghazi!

Unfortunately there is far more involved than the surface, or even a deeper dive by authors and even Congress.
I was tasked to the Regional Security Office in Basrah, Iraq as a new CPT (it's a long story). However, I had the opportunity to see the inner workings and struggles as well as coordination with multiple federal letter agencies and 'other government agencies' as well as international partners with regards to the security of the compound and the city at large. In short order, the RSO allowed me to security plans for the site, conducting briefs for new personnel, and even a few sections of the Emergency Action Plan and briefs sent to the highest levels.
I in no way want to downplay the role of senior level officials, but at the same time, there are an unbelievable number of levels and gates at each level to get projects approved. As well, unfortunately they are not the only ones to lose their lives in this type of work (as noted by the loss of four PSD members on my birthday).
Could the security posture of the compound been better? Of course, there is always more to be done; continual position improvement. But, there isn't a blank check. Projects compete for money and there are ranking criteria for these projects. It's no different than the military. Branches must pick and determine which weapons systems they choose to pursue while others get the axe.
Again, I'm not trying to condone, nor condemn the Congressional circus after the fact, just to help lay a further understanding of events before that date.

I don’t think anyone is claiming that in hindsight we could’ve done more. Thank you for putting this out so everyone can think back and remember our Fallen warriors.
I have read up on the Benghazi in depth. I'd like to thank you for all the good info you used in your article, so true are those words you put on paper.
To play Devils Advocate, I just want to put this out there to see if there is any response. Knowing the secret CIA base was without a compliment of Marines and really no protection. Now, thinking about the QRF. They are not recognized as military, yet they are hired by a private company that charges the government a ton of money for their service, not that they dont deserve it because they do, but should have been manned by official military . Remember this is just hypothetical. I bring it up for discussion if anyone wants to do that .Now, maybe our country didn't really know the extent of the CIA compound, and maybe the majority of the officers-in-charge were 2 or 3?? and didn't care about the QRF. en tell it was to late. Maybe they had to double check and triple check before they were going to entertain an act of aggression. Maybe, they did know everything we knew and just didn't think it was appropriate to help a non acknowledge-official CIA compound and deal with the repercussions after the fact.
These are just a few of the questions that people have come up with. Me, I agree with the MSgt. We must always, always remember places like Benghazi as well as the people who was in that NON-OFFICAL CIA compound.
There are a lot of "maybe's" in this. I did that for a reason. I want to know where our military, now and then, stand on this injustice, that seems to take place more frequently as we move forward.

We never should have been in Libya in the first place but Secretary Clinton pushed and insisted to President Obama that we had to act. We should have let Gaddafi's government do what they needed. The insurgent mortar team at Benghazi was not a bunch of what we used to call "technicals" with little training. They were obviously a well-trained/experienced team that quickly ranged and walked in their rounds right on target.

The Benghazi Four will never be forgotten. The surviving contractors, active duty SOF who knew them (the 2 SEALS) and those Americans and the surviving families of the four will not let them be forgotten. I for one will not forget the Benghazi Four. No one must forget them.

The entire situation ended up being a civilian response to what should have been a military intervention. At the onset of escalation the civilian side of the house should have deferred all matters of protection, intervention and extraction to those who know .. the US military and its leaders. The reaction would have been swift and deadly, to those that didn't comply. Those that gave their lives are selfless heroes and those that came home no different. Their names (All) should be remembered and all are worth more than repeating. One of those names (MSGT Jolly, USMC (Ret.) was one of two Delta ops involved. He and his counter part were awarded the military's second highest medal for their acts of heroism and bravery. He's a heroic Marine, a patriot and a family member. May we never have another President or Secretary of State that allows something like this to happen again.

Let me add that the Democrats are unhappy because Trump DIDN'T start WWIII. Further, Iran clearly got the message, because they warned Iraq of the missile response they planned to send, and Iraq warned us. 16 missiles fired, 5 duds, and no one killed. That's a face-saving temper tantrum, much like the Democrats anguish that WWIII didn't get going.

Trump's measured response was exactly what was needed after 8 years of appeasement.

Understand this is a horrible tragedy and we will never forget them but blaming an administration that is no longer in place does nothing but bring anger against the current one that had nothing to do with this.
As with any tragedy we need to learn from it so it NEVER happens again and try to be proactive instead of reactive. There are so many situations that can arise from any incident and we need to be prepared for as many as we can think of. If anything going forward happens like this again it is all of our fault for not being ready.
It is easy to blame someone after the fact and bring up all the issues and problems but what we need are solutions and action plans. We need to create plans named after incidents like this so nobody forgets, we need a “Benghazi” evacuation and support plan to ensure all embassies and personnel are effectively and safely evacuated. Things like this will ensure they did not die for no reason. Do not waste time and effort trying to place blame when you can help prevent any future incidents.

The responsibility for responding to Benghazi rested with President Obama, the National Command Authority (POTUS SECDEF, SECSTATE) and the regional unified commanders (CINCUSEUR, CINCAFRCOM). Only the President had the authority to authorize crossing the border into Libya.
So the blame for inaction rests solely on POTUS and the rest of the National Command Authority. However, the military commanders in the chain of command had the moral/ethical responsibility to strongly, I repeat strongly, disagree with the National Command Authority. Did they, the American public hasn't heard a "peep" from them.

The UCMJ can definitely be invoked to evaluate our national failure to act at Benghazi.
The UCMJ states:
§899. Art. 99. Misbehavior before the enemy Any member of the armed forces who before or in the presence of the enemy— (1) runs away; (2) shamefully abandons, surrenders, or delivers up any command, unit, place, or military property which it is his duty to defend; (3) through disobedience, neglect, or intentional misconduct endangers the safety of any such command, unit, place, or military property; (4) casts away his arms or ammunition; (5) is guilty of cowardly conduct; (6) quits his place of duty to plunder or pillage; (7) causes false alarms in any command, unit, or place under control of the armed forces; (8) willfully fails to do his utmost to encounter, engage, capture, or destroy any enemy troops, combatants, vessels, aircraft, or any other thing, which it is his duty so to encounter, engage, capture, or destroy; or (9) does not afford all practicable relief and assistance to any troops, combatants, vessels, or aircraft of the armed forces belonging to the United States or their allies when engaged in battle; shall be punished by death or such other punishment as a court-martial may direct.

I almost threw up when I heard the Administration saying it was a spontaneous response to a video. Spontaneous means an attack with heavy weapon support and pincer movements? Duhhhhh? Then came the rumor of "Dr Morsi sent us." As soon as I heard of the attack, I said to my wife, They're after a swap, the ambassador for that blind sheik mullah, because Obama couldn't release him and not get hurt politically. I think the true story has yet to be told. I believe President Sisi probably has more info that we do not have access to. There has to be more to this BS that theyu are telling us. As usual, follow the $$$$$$$$ if it involves politics.

A perspective on this is that we have way more other losses which are never disclosed and full of Monday Morning Quarterbacking during this year of perfect 2020 hindsight. Aircrews, special ops, CIA and others have SEVERELY redacted reports which never convey the full truth. The CIA has stars and no names on its wall. Such is life on the tip of the spear.

What I fail to understand about this issue and how it became such a partisan rallying cry, is the fact that there were multiple investigations created and administered by Republicans and each of the investigating bodies came away empty. It seems as though many want this investigated until they get the outcome they want.

Unlike others we see, in these investigations no one ducked and dodged any subpoenas or refused to testify. Ten investigations were conducted into the 2012 Benghazi attack, six of these by Republican-controlled House committees and even though mistakes were made, no one was proven to be complacent. So do we ignore all of those investigations because they did not deliver the outcome that we wanted?

If we go back to my era of battle there are a host of questions still lingering over the loss of life due to Friendly Fire. It’s estimated that there may be as many as 8,000 friendly fire incidents in the Vietnam War caused by mistakes, negligence, exhaustion, panic, horseplay, dim lighting, dense vegetation, inattentiveness, faulty equipment, poor training, foolishness, ill fortune or some combination of the above. Does anyone know any of those names? I personally knew a few.

I hole hartley agree that the party in office must be held accountable. As a service member they were put in harm's way and should have been backed up/covered. Just what did Republicans do wrong in regards to Benghazi besides letting themselves be stonewalled by the Democrats? Help was spun up and then shut down. A regional commander was relieved of command for attempting to send a QRF team. Amambassibor Stevens was a friend of Hillary's, and she refused to take his calls. It was a big deal and a photo op When the Seals took down Ben Laden. But Obama and Hillary were indifferent about Benghazi refusing to send help. And then put out a false narrative about it being a spontaneous incident set off by a comic book with a Picture of Mohamad in it. My family has served since the Civil War, were the first to Gold stare would have been given if they did that back then. I fell apart when Benguiz happened. I was spitting mad out in my front yard. When a neighbor of mine walked by and asked me what was wrong, he was more concerned about me then what happened in Ben Guzi. He lost his only son, A Marine in Afganistan earlier that year. I'm still mad and disappointed in the lack of action taken them. And the lack of action taken later in Afghanistan. Each and every investigation found no wrong doing by Clinton.
Stevens went by himself against advice to benghazi.

As what normally happens when things go sideways the DC shuffle to first deny then when caught in lie to lie again then to try to smooth things over with BS and finally just say not important we to to move on. In all my years in military and time spent in combat l came to realization that if DOD wanted funding they had to smooze up to politicians F the troops and become part of the problem. There is separation in government but military is controlled by Congress which creates a atmosphere of political correctness while destroying the true mission of not only protecting our Nation but our troops. Why is it that one political party, fails to protect out embassies? With so many US Military installations in near by countries, maybe three hours flying time, can't they just use a "show of force"? Tehran in 1979, Benghazi in 2012, both installations, attacked, overrun and no reply made. Trying to ease tentions dipolmatically (as in Iran) did not work for 444 days. Sitting (iterally on their hands or sleeping peacefully thru the night) not even making any decisions, cost the lives of four men. Our embassies, dipolmatic annexes, and compounds deserve more up grades. Security personnel need to be better equipted. Plans for a show of force response need to be in place and used, when our embassies, compounds and dipolmatic personnel and their servurity members are threathen. No more excuses of "Oh, those people were demonstrating over a cartoon about their prophet". If one political party is not going to care about its diplomats, the personnel who staff the embassies, compounds and the security staff, then let's go back to being isolationists. No more Benghazis or Tehrans!
