As far as the tan/green/maroon beret goes, I say let them wear it all the time. That being said, it's not very utilitarian, has a tendency to overheat the head, dishevel hair (I know, we're all supposed to have high-and-tights, right?) and there are far too many interpretations on how it's formed and positioned, making about %50 of the people wearing it look terrible. The patrol cap is great for working outdoors and is an easy turn-to for when you just gotta get some headgear on. My personal opinion? Beret for garrison and formal (or ASU Dress Hat for formal - looks slick), patrol cap for work details and field wear. Or the boonie cap. That thing is awesome for the field. Response by SSG Private RallyPoint Member made Mar 10 at 2014 9:18 PM 2014-03-10T21:18:32-04:00 2014-03-10T21:18:32-04:00 SFC James Baber 73367

I think it was one of the worst changes that the then COS made during his tenure, the beret other than for the specialized units that worked hard to earn it, should have never been forced on the regular Army, it was not weather friendly or protective for everyday use in BDUs or ACUs.

I think it was one of the best decisions to go back to the PC for everyday use, and the beret for ASUs and special occasions, but allow the specialized units that earned them, keep them for their specialty and we will use it for special events.
Response by SFC James Baber made Mar 10 at 2014 10:49 PM 2014-03-10T22:49:14-04:00 2014-03-10T22:49:14-04:00 SSgt Michael Hacker 141406

Neither.
