The ex is the criminal. Bureaucracy sucks, but it didn't kill her. She could've carried her own knife, pepper spray, taser, etc. Not blaming her, but the options weren't gun or nothing.

It is a sad story. Why was the permit held up so long? Not sure if a civil suit could be won but based on how seriously backed up NJ's gun laws are after reading the article, I'm going to bank on the fact that she will be the face of gun law reform in the state. Domestic violence is already addressed in countless laws, statutes, and ordinances. Seems like every day I read where another victim has been assaulted or worse by someone who ignored a RO.

As someone mentioned before, we could play "What If" for years on end and not reach a firm conclusion. What I CAN tell you is this: Speaking as a former LEO, you have a better chance of protecting yourself by being armed, staying alert, and knowing your surroundings.

I carry a firearm specifically because I have suspects who have threatened bodily harm to myself and/or my family. My firearm saved my life on one occasion since the suspect made a hasty retreat when he discovered I was armed and ready for his attack.

Best advice I can give to anyone is learn self defense, carry some means of defending yourself (OC spray, weapon, tazer, etc), KNOW YOUR SURROUNDINGS, and stay alert with your head on a swivel. Some situations can be avoided if you know the aggressor is there. Sometimes you have to meet force with force to survive. Extremely sad and unfortunate... It's getting to the point where to follow the law for anything where you are are in desperate need will get you killed if you do, and jailed if you don't... Win or lose, you just can't win or lose... MSgt Curtis Ellis Sun, 04 Oct 2015 20:02:52 -0400 2015-10-04T20:02:52-04:00 2015-06-10T14:57:43-04:00
