Best Under-rated military movie?

Some military movies got overlooked in the recognition department. I liked "The Siege of Firebase Gloria"-just because R. Lee Ermey rocked it with his one-liners! What other less-known tasty military nuggets are out there, possibly undiscovered?

I always thought 'Gardens of Stone' was underrated, it was a great film, a stellar cast, and you can't even find it on DVD (other than bootleg)... what's up with that?!

I seem to remember "The boys of Company C" being very accurate if not a very shoot em up. Most portrayals of Vietnam just really pissed me off. Although, at one time or another during that conflict, I believe everything that could happen, DID happen. They did not happen in one day, or every day!

My favorite was Spy Game with Robert Redford and Brad Pitt. Although it is about the CIA more than the military, it could still be considered a military movie. It is complex and I think it didn't do well in theaters because audiences really have to pay attention to understand what is going on and need to know something about Cold War history and geography. I have watched it a dozen times and I have seen something I missed every time. It's full of one-liners too. Anyone in the military who has had to deal with the pencil-necks in DC can appreciate it.

Enemy at the Gates with Jude Law is also a great movie that is under-rated - probably because the Soviets became our enemies after WWII.

Laugh if you want to but I am a big fan of The Delta Force with Chuck Norris. It really is scary to think about an in flight hijacking like that but when you fast forward to 911 you can see how much that film gives away. I can't imagine a terrorist high jacking a plane and then moving the passengers off into a holding cell in a foreign country. I think its a classic movie and you have to love the theme music throughout the film. Major McCoy all day!!

One of the best movies I've seen that got very little press was "Taking Chance". Really powerful story with Kevin Bacon as a Marine returning a fallen Marine to his home that really grabbed hold of me and stirred some emotions that I usually keep buried pretty deep.

It is Russian, in Russian, with NO sub-titles.
1988 Russian excursion into Afghanistan.
It may plow civilians under, but if you have seen combat, you will get into it and understand even without the sub-titles. Says a lot for any movie. A friend sent me this on a jump drive.

I always loved the movies Stripes. There were quite a few funny one liners from Harold Ramis and Bill Murray. That cast had some of the good actors of the 80's like Judge Reinhold and John Candy as "The Ox"

"Casualties of War". I consider it to be the best war film I've ever seen, next to Saving Private Ryan. It's also based on a real story (google Incident on Hill 192). Brian de Palma (the director) does an incredible job of immersing you into the horror and graphic nature of war in this film.

Hanoi Hilton. SERE school can't prepare you for the reality enough. Mandatory viewing for your troops prior to deploying. Please be in the right frame of mind when you watch this movie. It is gut wrenching to say the least. It is one of those films that you owe it to your troops to expose them to it. I used it for SGT's Time training whenever I did classes on the Code of Conduct. My old CAV CSM had a policy to review all SGT Time training and when he saw "Code of Conduct" he came to light me up......he stayed till the end, along with the SCO.

I have a few I enjoy, most older than I:

Army of Shadows - about the french resistance in WWII
several Bogart films, Sahara, Action in the North Atlantic, and Passage to Marseille come to mind as underrated
The Dam Busters - British bombing German dams
Rio Lobo - the Duke as a Union Calvary officer during the civil war, and his quest to put things right after the war. Always liked this movie better than Rio Bravo due to the front third of the movie and the military aspect, back 2/3rds of both movies quite similar

PATTON! Man of action. Shoot the ass and throw him over the bridge! Of course he did back down and allowed the "Original Rangers" to wear soft caps. (Jeep caps, remember?) Whenhe admitted to being an"actor", that sold me. As I recall, he responded to a query about him acting a bad ass part by saying, It doesn't matter if I am acting or not, just so they believe me"

Drill Sergeants are not really bad guys, good ones just scare recruits to death.

General Patton always claimed his use of profanity was to ensure communication with the troops in a language they could understand.

One of his better statements was when he wrote an old classmate, "At the close of this war, I shall remove my insignia and wrist watch. I will continue to wear my short coat so that everyone can kiss my ass!"
One more was, "I am a hell of a guy, I am giving the men hell one minute and crying over them the next".

"I get very tired of being the only person in this outfit who makes any corrections".

"As for the kind of remarks I make, why sometimes I just, by God, get carried away with my own eloquence".

I may get some flack for these but how about "The Boys of Company C" with R. Lee Ermey and "A Rumor of War" ? Both are about Vietnam and the focus is on the training of Marines who are thrust into this conflict. Not really down-rated (some consider it to be one of the finest motion pictures ever made) but largely unknown:

Grand Illusion (Renoir, 1937).

Now out in a completely restored version (the original negative, thought to have been destroyed by an Allied bombing run, had been shipped from Paris to the Reichsfilmarchiv vaults in Berlin when Paris was being sacked Then it went to the State Film Archive in Moscow after the Soviets did their thing in their sector of Berlin, eventually returned to France.)

In the "What, were they thinking?" department, two films that made the rounds of outdoor theatres everywhere in RVN were "Khartoum" and "Charge Of The Light Brigade", both of which are sorta topical nowadays.

We also got "M*A*S*H" and "The Green Berets", both of which were regarded as serious comedy hits by those of us sitting on ammo cans and swatting mosquitoes back in the day. The beach scene with the Sun setting in the East in the latter film actually got some cheers on one occasion.

Mostly unknown nowadays, but not underrated in its time is Grand Illusion (1937) directed by Jean Renoir.

Among a number of WWI POWs in a German camp is a small group of French aviators who plot and execute an escape. The relationships between the various classes that permeated Europe in that era are explored. It is the origin of the "Von Rauffenstein Maneuver" for downing a shot of brandy when your neck and upper spine are in a metal frame due to an unfortunate incident with an aeroplane.

The version without subtitles assumes you understand English, German, French and Russian at the least.

I watch it at least once a year when I can find the DVD.

I haven't seen "Bravo Two Zero" mentioned yet. British film about an SAS team on a long range surveillance mission that was compromised during the Gulf War. I was in Long Range Surveillance (LRS) for most of my career. Great movie showing a LRS/LRRP style mission gone bad from compromise, breaking contact, evasion, and time as POWs.

"Mountain Men" from 1980, with Charlton Heston. Almost no one I know who is alive has seen this movie. It had a lot of fight scenes with Native Americans. . .and illustrated a long-lost perspective on the war between the settlers and Native Americans.

As a young man growing up in Kansas City, Missouri, my father and I use to sit around in the 50's and 60's and watch war movies together. I remember seeing a movie that became my litmus test for ALL war movies. It starred Gary Cooper, Jane Wyatt, and Walter Brennan. It was called "Task Force". Needless to say, I use this as my standard for good war movies.

I believe the Siege of Firebase Gloria was ignored, by and large, because of the exposure of the more disgusting aspects of war that civilians just don't want to know about. When they find the slaughtered village and he remarks "This is effective" I heard several people remark what an animal he was to be so uncaring. Civilians......what can you say?

Also "Taking Chance"...very intense movie.

Two that few have heard about, perhaps, fewer still have likely seen. Go Tell the Spartans is an incredible movie about the early military advisor days of Viet Nam. It stars Burt Lancaster as a very cynical major. Second is The Gallant Hours, a semi-documentary dramatization of five weeks in the life of Vice Admiral William F. "Bull" Halsey, Jr., starring James Cagney in the role of the admiral. This one is my all-time favorite.

The 9th Company, Russian movie about a young person in the soviet union joining the Russian army, going through training, shipping off to Afghanistan (their viet-nam) and his tours of duty. I watched it during one of my tours in OIF, best to watch in Russian, read the subtitles.

Cross of Iron, 1977. Steiner (James Coburn) is the hardbitten NCO trying to hold things together in his chunk of a crumbling front in the Crimea. My CO when I was a drill said he believed Steiner was a communist because he didn't like officers. I bit my tongue. Great performances from Maximilian Schell and James Mason, too.

Well, this is an old thread, but I'll throw my two cents in with a few nobody seems to have mentioned: "The Beast" with Jason Patric and George Dzundza about a Russian tank crew in Afghanistan; "Renaissance Man" with Mark Walhberg and Danny Devito..not so much a war movie as an Army movie, but still very watchable; "No Man's Land" Bosnian language movie (with English subtitles) about, obviously, the war in Bosnia; "Go For Broke!" about the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the only Nissei American unit in the army, and the most highly decorated unit in WWII.

“Boys in Company C” was the best Marine Corps Vietnam movie in my opinion. It was also R. Lee Ermey’s first movie and 10x better than Full metal Jacket. But every damn movie like Patton with M60 and M48 tanks playing German Tigers are trash! I loved the Movie “FURY” and “Here comes the Tanks”. Still love being a Tanker!
