Although it is about the CIA more than the military, it could still be considered a military movie. It is complex and I think it didn't do well in theaters because audiences really have to pay attention to understand what is going on and need to know something about Cold War history and geography. I have watched it a dozen times and I have seen something I missed every time. It's full of one-liners too. Anyone in the military who has had to deal with the pencil-necks in DC can appreciate it. It really is scary to think about an in flight hijacking like that but when you fast forward to 911 you can see how much that film gives away. I can't imagine a terrorist high jacking a plane and then moving the passengers off into a holding cell in a foreign country. Go Tell the Spartans is an incredible movie about the early military advisor days of Viet Nam. It stars Burt Lancaster as a very cynical major. Second is The Gallant Hours, a semi-documentary dramatization of five weeks in the life of Vice Admiral William F. "Bull" Halsey, Jr., starring James Cagney in the role of the admiral. This one is my all-time favorite.
