Best way to get a copy of my DD-214?

Just a quick question, does anybody know a quick reliable way to get your DD-214, I've applied for mine at least 4 times with no response. Hell I would pay good money at this point.

You've applied for your DD-214 via the SF-180? Are you entered in the VA's healthcare system?

I might be able to help...just need more information.

You didn't make copies of it? That is an extremely important document that you will need when you apply for jobs, buy a house, use the Gi Bill..etc. Didn't they brief you that when you were in TAP? Sorry didn't mean to be brash. Anyways the link that PFC Kenneth Koepke listed is correct. Once you recieve that copy from the archives make a zillion copies and keep the extras in a safe place.

The 25 things I was told at every DD-214 update and at retirement was, "Make several copies of your DD-214, put one in a safe deposit box, file one with your city clerk's office, keep a few at home..."

On separation I asked for a copy of my military record. Don't know if you can do this anymore but if so I would highly recommend doing so.

I have a document I can send you that you can fill out. It has to either be faxed or mailed. They do not except electronic requests. I just recently got mine. It took a couple weeks and I used the fax method.

I use E-Benefits. It's a great source for accessing your benefits. You can download most of what you need there. I have also asked for my DD214 at my VA Office and they have hooked me up. Hope this helps.

I've been paranoid about keeping mine safe since '89. I have a document pouch that I keep all my important papers in, and whenever I move i make sure that pouch is the first and second thing I find.

Now here's something I know a little bit about.

PO2 Terry Lewis, Having the bad luck of my originals being destroyed in a fire and my replacement set destroyed by my wonderful kiddos (don't ask), I've had the opportunity to request and successfully receive replacement DD-214s in a pretty timely manner.

The first time, I used the following site,

http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/

The second time, I located the nearest Department of Veteran Affairs and got replacements through my VA rep.

The second option was much quicker than the first and I got my replacements in less than 1 month.

If Myrtle Creek, OR is where you're living now, I took the liberty of looking up where the nearest Department of Veteran Affairs is to you. Here is the link to that office and the Rep. who can help you.
