1. Why is it taking so long for the Boy Scouts of America to update its policy and allow homosexuals to serve as volunteer adult leaders?

2. Why are children 'aware' (third paragraph) that adults are even homosexual?

The Boy Scouts of America has revoked the charter of a Seattle church that refused to fire its pack's gay scoutmaster, according to a letter written by the organization's general counsel and provided to CNN by the church.

The church received its charter in November and selected Geoff McGrath, a 49-year-old Eagle Scout, to lead the troop. The Rev. Monica Corsaro said she knew McGrath was gay, and she wasn't trying to make any political statement by selecting him

She further said all the boys in the troop were aware of McGrath's sexuality and that his selection was in line with the church's philosophy of being "open to all people."

Why is this even a discussion? As SSG Sedlacek accurately pointed out, the BSA is a PRIVATE organization and can do what it wants to. Just like I do with businesses I do NOT like, others can just decide to NOT join the BSA. It's that simple. WHY are others trying to impose THEIR beliefs on a private organization? Sounds very intolerant and dishonest to me.

On a side note, I have NO issue with any group or organization as long as they are truly honest about their beliefs. Are there ones that I DON'T like? Of course but ultimately it is their choice to do as they so choose. It is NOT my right to dictate to anyone what they can or can not believe. All I can do is teach and guide others towards facts, science and the truth. It is up to each person whether they wish to accept it or not. Either way, this issue is nothing but an emotional reaction by those who wish to dishonestly and forcefully impose their ideology on others. It's wrong and downright disgusting.

I was a Scoutmaster/Cub Master/District Committee/Council Camp Master for 15 years. I was never paid so I cannot speak for the BSA but I believe I have a voice as a volunteer scouter who has invested substantial time, energy and money into BSA for the benefit of my sons.

I agree BSA is a private organization and can set their own standards. As I allowed my boys to be alligned with this organization I tacitly agreed to abide by BSA policy, even if I did not agree with some of it. The greater good that BSA represents out weighed what I believed to be archaic patterns of social distinction.

What most of the conflict with BSA centers around is that they claim the rights as a private organization while simultaneously taking the privileges afforded by the government to charitable organizations. This is like having your cake and eating it too.

If they are going to take government assistance in whatever form that consists of, whether its material goods, money, time, equipment or venue; then they should abide by the stipulations of being non-discriminatory.

I believe in their mission to make better men and citizens out of young boys. I do not believe that teaching discrimination should be a part of that plan.

Not everyone or every group is ready to be "progressive" in changing what they believe just because the world around them is changing. The BSA has always been very strong in their core values and while one day they may change their views expecting them to do so quickly is far fetched.

As for the public knowledge of his orientation, I see the point of why. It was probably thought that by disclosing it to everyone in the beginning that there would be no surprises, parents could answer questions their own way instead of him being caught off guard and saying something the parents were appalled to hear.

Well, I'm sure it doesn't help that a lot of the funding provided to the BSA comes from conservative groups... It's a very "rock and a hard place" situation for them.

We simply ignore the national policy because it makes no sense in this day and age. People are vetted for criminal activity and the like that would go against what BSA teaches. BSA is not in the practice of teaching/discussing/promoting anything to do with sexuality.

It does bother me that the LGBT community is trying to use the unfortunate national policy as a soapbox, again, because we don't discuss these issues with the boys in our charge. There was an article in a recent post showing a scouter with a rainbow neckerchief slide, I assume indicating his orientation. That type of stuff is just wrong, but is so typical of all these "splinter groups" feeling a need to associate with race/gender/gender orientation/ethnic background FIRST and the large organization second.
