Can a nation survive when less than 1% of its citizens are willing to fight to preserve it?

LTC Private RallyPoint Member Sir that depends on your context for "fight"
If you mean serve in the forces which guard our country ..yes I think in most circumstances it can (something like WWI, II or yikes III, no it would take much more)
If you include the many other ways Americans can "Fight" for their country though public service, voting, and yes I'll say it, political service ..then NO, we need much more than 1% to "fight" for our country.
Look at it this way, Census Bureau says we had about 301.3 million folks in 2007..
1% is 3,017, 500 people..That exceeds the authorized total from all service branches I believe. So 1% "fighting" as in serving in a military exceeds what we "need" Even if we had 12%, 20%, 32% willing to fight, we have no "need" as congress has said we cant hire them at this point.

There are two things to remember here, I think. First is that only three percent took up arms to establish this Republic, and Secondly, there is always the draft in case of national emergency.

So far so good.
I will take the best 1% that our nation has to offer and take on everything our enemies can throw at us.
And beat them.
And take their lunch money.
And explain to any other tin pot dictators with delusions of grandeur that we can do it again if we need to.
