I was in the Navy for the Gulf war in 91 aboard a ship supporting the northern gulf war. I was told by numerous people that now that I am in the Army I can be authorized to wear a Combat patch due to the commanding officer of the war was an Army General. Not to sure about this but how would I go about checking into this?

Short answer....no. You get your combat patch from units you deployed with, or served with in theater. And the "served with" has strings attached. But basically, if you were assigned to an Army unit during the war, and that unit's commander was the guy who gave you orders and wrote your evaluations, you earned a combat patch. In many cases, if you were "OPCON" to an Army unit, you can also receive a combat patch. In all cases, the award is published in orders. If you don't have orders from an Army unit awarding you a combat patch, you can't wear one. But look at the bright side. We are still at war, and you will have many opportunities to start your collection.

SFC James Reeder - (a) A deployed unit (company or higher) will wear its unit SSI as the SSI-FWTS, REGARDLESS of the headquarters
element deploying and the unit alignment or OPCON during the period of deployment.

SFC Reeder, I have 4 documents authorizing wear of SSI-FWS. Call them whatever you like. I always wore the 1st ID patch, as it was my first deployment, but earned three more along the way. If you have multiples, you can choose which to wear.

As far as I know after reading AR 670-1 you can wear the SSI-FWS as long as you have orders showing you were in theatre and combat was declared regardless of the branch of service.

SGT David Nicholas - That's a big negative. Being from another branch, even in wartime, doesn't rate you an Army combat patch(SSI-FWTS). Period.

The answer is no. The Navy does not have any unit patches to wear that will transfer over to the Army. The Marines do.

On the surface, that's incorrect. Although all assets were attached to centcom, your parent service was still the navy, and with very few exceptions, they do NOT issue combat patches.

You'd need to go read the president established for the operation. You'll find a reference in AR-670-1, that will have a synapses of the criteria. But, iirc, as you were in the navy at the time, the answer would be, no, you don't qualify.
