I last wore my uniform to my brother's military funeral. I too have a beard, which I grew immediately on my retirement from the service, some 15 years ago.
I didn't question the regs. I shaved my beard without hesitation, wore my uniform with pride, and re-grew my beard in just a few weeks. It was no big sacrifice.
BTW -- I kept my "regulation mustache" which predates the beard by decades.

Way to set the example, CW3 Harvey Keck and to honor your brother properly. I'm sorry for your loss.

Sadly, I once again wore my uniform (and shaved my beard) for a brother's funeral, to honor yet another veteran of the Korean War just a few weeks ago. This brother was Army, and a draftee, not a career Marine as our older brother was. Even so, he served honorably as a staff NCO, and met up with our older brother in Korea.

SPC Tate Smith,
Short answer: No. Must be worn the same as when you were still in. AR 670-1 and DA Pamphlet 670-1 still apply.

Long answer: It can be found in AR 670-1, Chapter 23. Specifically, paragraph 23-1b.

Whatever you chose to do, just wear the uniform with pride and honor. You're still representing the Army and all of us still in.

It may be an old thread but definitely not an old topic. I bet there still isn't a clear cut answer to the OPs question. I saw a bunch of attempts at interruptions, but nothing solid enough for me to go walk up to that grey haired vet to tell him he needs a shave and a hair cut if he wants to wear that service uniform he fought in. Just sayen

CW3 Patrick Strobel - Now that you mention it, my eldest brother (E-9 USMC - Retired) was buried in his dress blues, with his retirement beard intact. His widow was asked by the funeral director if they should shave his beard, which she declined. Her view, which I endorsed, was "That was how we all saw him for the last 30 years of his life, with a beard".
His more than 20 years of service, and combat in Korea, entitled him to some leeway in the regulations. I did not assume such a variance in my wear of the uniform, since I had no such claim to the honor and glory that my brother had.

CW3 Kevin Storm - Yep. I worked with some Sikh guys -- good people. In my ignorance, I thought they were a branch of the Muslim faith. Live and learn.

Sorry, but you are mistaken, military regulations no longer apply to retirees.

I haven't looked at the regs, just my own standards: If you put the uniform on, then get to standards. I will not wear my uniform again because I have a beard and don't want to shave. I see no problem wearing medals on a suit/tux to this function which is perfectly ok. Listen the admin POGS took this down as I posted it earlier.

CW3 Harvey Keck - Lol, yes I did. But his dad was their BN 1st Sgt and it didn't go well for them when someone pointed out that my rack was bigger than his. After he acted mad and scared them for a few minutes though he laughed and told them that it certainly was, lol. my son turned red as a beet!
