Can anyone explain if this guy I know is pretending to be a LTC?

An old friend of mine randomly posted a photo of himself in OCP’s with LTC rank. He told everyone that he just joined the Army Rerserves. I asked him what unit, and he told me it’s the 101st Airborne. He has a BS in nursing. He’s 45 years old. He’s not on ako or on enterprise. My question is, does this story smell fishy?

Sounds like BS to me. Too many red flags.

-Just joined and is an O-5?
-Reservist in 101st (an AD unit)?
-LTC with only a BS?
-Not on AKO or Enterprise?

Any one of those might not necessarily be problematic. Any combination of those would bring suspicion. All of those collectively signal a potential fake.

I'm pretty sure that 45 is a few years older than the limit for a commissioned officer to even get into the military. I wish I could join and be a LTC. However as most people have stated 45 is just a little older than what the army wants. I believe the oldest you can be to join the army is 35, Air Force allows 39 years. He def is stolen valor in my opinion.

Without trying to speak beyond my place, first, do you know for a certainly he's a licensed RN? Of so, in which state or territory? If he's licensed, he'd be listed on a state license verification site, typically, all clinical licenses typically are, for which there are search engines one can check, that I know for a fact, I was clinically licensed, as well as for another firpeld, though due to my total perm disability, my wife and Ii had me shut my clinical license sevl urs ago, however, I did go through the whole thing, so I've got a pretty fair idea how the whole thing is generally done, all statesmamd territories also require periodic reregistration of a license, as well as a specific number and often a specific variety of continuing ed units (CEUs), which you might've heard of...now, if you're really eager to find out, looking at a license verification site is public info, at least as far search engines by name and profession go, at least from what I've seen. Regardless that he's claiming to he Reserve, if he's actually working as an RN, he'd have to be licensed and registered, definitely, that I know for sure...also, domyou know where exactly he got his BSN? Did he positively not go for an MSN or NP, maybe a PhD? Was he ever prior military before at all so far as you know? If not nursing, then in any other field, whether Army or another svc? I can fathom why you're seeking to look him up on such sites, I'm assuming, as you're describing...typically, I've found that the generally nest and most carefully handled such site for serious professions is LinledIn, that:s just my personal observation, of course, I'll send this now, this tablet conks out a lot....

Nurses do get constructive credit but I e never seen a Nurse Corps Officer be awarded LTC, unless they are a CRNA with 25 years Civilian experience. But definitely not a Med Surge! It sounds very fishy! I’d look him up on Global or in AKO.

While it is possible to come in at certain specialties as high as O-6, the odds a person with a BSN came in as an O-5 as a Nurse with out an MSN, and in the Reserves title 32, not in a state military reserve. A state military reserve force (SMRF), is not part of the DoD, and can do really weird things. Not un common to hear of an E-4 going SMRF and coming out with a Major's grade. Depending on vacancies, and skill set. If he is a SMRF (in California we refer to them as Smurf's) it is possible, keep in mind most of these people augment the National Guard, in training, run ranges, help with annual medicals, and things of this nature. The state may use them in the event of a disaster and the guard is tied up with deployments. Now

A couple of thoughts. If he “just” joined the reserves, I’d call BS. However, if he was commissioned prior to going Reserve, it’s possible. Quite simply, ask to see his Military ID. You wouldn’t be out of line asking for it, and if he’s an honorable man, he’ll provide it proudly. If he gives you a “line” ask to see his DD214. IF he hands you ANY reason why he can’t or won’t - he is LYING to you!

If you were looking for a way to give him the benefit of the doubt, and maybe you shouldn't:

- The AMEDD has weird rules about direct commissioning.
- They used to call it PROFIS to stand for Professional Officer Filler System. No telling what it is called now. But, it was a software system that maintained a list of reservists from around the country that would go fill up tactical medical units before they deployed. My first experience was with a doctor that was supposed to come work at the battalion aid station for the 2/31st Inf Bn of the 7th ID, an active duty unit.
- Beyond the BS degree, he could have other certifications like Advanced Trauma Life Support or special skills like OR, ICU or ER. It is possible that it is the EXPERIENCE more than the degree level that got him rank.
- The age requirement for the AMEDD is set much higher than most of the Army.

I ran into a Major that wasn't on AKO. He was in my last Reserve unit, but he was actually in the unit.

His story sounds baloney... The highest you can come into the Army is at Captain and that is only if you're a Doctor or JAG Officer I believe. 101st AB is not a Reserve unit; the only Combat Arms unit currently in the Reserves is the 100th IN BN in Hawaii & Samoa.... FYSA.

Usually advanced officer rank would be granted for the more advanced degrees, for example I think my mom got a similar offer as an OBGYN doctor. But to answer, if it's a "new" situation, it may take a bit to catch up. Does he have a CAC yet? Just saw a good catch from others, yeah 101st Airborne is an Active Duty unit. I was in 101st Engineers (a National Guard unit) so it didn't set off the alarms at first. I'm calling BS.

I’m going throw the bulllshit flag here. Even if he has a BS in nursing, he wouldn’t direct commission higher than O-3 at the most. Second, only way he would be Reserve and be assigned there would be as an IMA Soldier since there are no Army Reserve Engagement Cells (ARECs) At Division level. Not to throw down a gauntlet, but I would get Stolen Valor to check if it really concerns you. Better to have them find out before he jams himself up.

BS is the smell. 101st has no reserve units attached or associate. So to wear the patch you have to be active. The only army program that I’ve ever known that brings someone in as an LTC is Medical Corp. the one person I ever seen come in as an LTC was a board certified, 8 year practicing neurosurgeon.( mind you internship, residency....) and as mention LTC and only a BS... not impossible, but highly unlikely.

As a retired LTC myself, I believe it's safe to say that your "friend" is being less than truthful. In fact, I believe that he has violated the Stolen Valor Act. It is doubtful at age 45, because current regulations specify a maximum age of 35 to enlist.

As for achieving the rank of LTC, that takes a couple of decades, not a couple of reserve meetings. Joining the 101st as a Reservist? That's not possible, although a real Reservist could be activated and assigned to the unit; the 101st is an active duty division based at Ft. Campbell, not a reserve unit.

You should disassociate yourself from him, and, if you wish pursue the matter, you may report your suspicions of Stolen Valor to the local FBI office or the DOJ office. The bit about being in the 101st Abn bothers me a lot. It is not a Reserve Unit, but that is not the worst part. Reservists often do stints of active duty. Does he live anywhere near Ft. Campbell, KY? Say within about 20 miles, max? If so, he gets the benefit of a doubt. If not, don't believe him.

The 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) is an active component unit. While some US Army Reserve units have affiliations and mission relationships with the 101st, you will have to be on active duty to wear that Screaming Eagle patch on your shoulder.

Does sound fishy, but consider a possible scenario: he receives a direct commission because he is a nurse (RN?). He might be assigned to the 101st as an augmentee. I’m not a expert in this area either, but there used to be a program where reservists would be assigned to the same AD unit each summer for a few weeks. IRR? They did not have a reserve unit, per se. When I was AD in Japan we had a USAF major come spend each summer with us on the USFJ staff. Was he wearing appropriate patches and insignia? That’s often a giveaway.

Ask in a polite way to see what the new ID cards look like. They have a DOD number and not an SSN or Serial number. Sounds to me is like an X- friend of mine, retired Major that brags about his combat tours. He is actually on the democrat ticket running for congress. For good laughs just check him out. The POTUS called him a wack job. His wife even posted that he suffered two TBI's but he made the cut and is the only democrat on the ballot. Go figure. I am sad for him and years ago tried to advise him to STFU about his combat exploits and let others praise him. He appears to be narcissistic and pumps iron. I feel sad for him. Tennessee and Kentucky National Guard Soldiers don 101st Airborne Division patch

Reserve and National Guard units are participating in a pilot program that integrates all three components under “Compo 1 2 3”.

You will still administratively be under the control of the TN ARNG or under whatever reserve unit is participating, but you will be under the training umbrella of the 101st ABN.

Select Active Duty units are doing the same thing under Nationals guard divisions:

Well since this post just popped up for me..
I seen it first hand last year working at CRC at Fort Bliss for the year Full blown Colonels coming just in to deploy overseas because they are specialized doctors. I seen mostly O5-O-7 rank coming in that were Doctors or nurses ect with no military background just to do a contract overseas in a medical facility. Most them I chatted with told me they would and never would have a command ect they just signed a contract to go overseas and work in the medical field. So it could happen especially when you have a certain skillset the government needs.

Now I don't believe the 101st has a reserve unit but could or could be attached to them overseas that I do not know.

Based on a quick search, it appears as though it's possible. Here's 300 Guardsman who are part of the 101st airborne:

Additionally, many units train under the umbrella of the 101st, even though they're not technically part of it. This may be simply a bit of overstatement on the part of your friend.

As for the rank, I believe it's absolutely possible. Based on the credentials of your friend, those in the medical field are often given a rank that coincides with the rough responsibilities/benefits for which they have trained in the private sector.

There are circumstances, especially in the medical field, where officers are accepted with a higher rank, however I am not sure of those stipulations. Also, I am not sure if there are exceptions for age, as each branch has their own rules. I believe the maximum accepted age anywhere is 42 years old. And I also believe that he would be required to go through months of training as a cadet, candidate , etc before he could wear any officer rank. Does anyone here know if 101st even has reservists?! And even if they did, I don't imagine they would assign the noobs to a high speed unit such as that.

It can happen - it's highly irregular and thus chances of happening are very few. In my early career, I knew a doctor that had retired from private practice. The military did recruit him and he came on as a LTC. But his medical skills were such that he was needed. While he was assigned like other medical personnel - one of his duties was to teach other doctors the skills he had.

Most doctors are brought on as an O-3 (Captain) while RNs are normally brought on as an O-1 or O-2. My brother was offered O-4 right out of med school, but he had served 4 years as a combat medic with combat experience. There are nurses who come on as O-3 and maybe O-4 who have a lot of other things - prior service, certain specialties, etc.

So to truly answer your question, would need to know more. But on the surface of things - highly doubtful

As a long time US Army Reserve member now retired, I want to remind those here that there‘ve indeed been cases of nurses joining the Reserves at later ages, due to the shortage of nurses and doctors on the Army’s medical staff. But, (and I emphase “BUT” ) -…there are two simple points I‘d like to make. Normally a Doctor or Specialist, is promoted to the rank of 03 otherwise most receive a commission to 2nd LT., but some have received -a direction above O1 on special occasions. Nurses EMT or surgical nurses could receive a higher promotion, but that would be on a case by case basis, however, I‘d generally call BULLSHIT.. on the age requirement. Age requirement is 40 at the time of commission, for retirement otherwise they won’t accept you. Age 44 and older is a No-Go, because it’s impossible to offer retirement of less than 20 at the onset of enlistment? Of course there are circumstances such as;- if that servicemember {he/she } has prior credible service then that would cumulative to the age requirements! As age 60 is the set for the “MRD {Magatory Retirement Date}” or age for all unless signed by a two star or higher.
Lastly, that individual wouldn’t be assigned to an active duty Division, but to a field unit or hospital then attached to Fort Campbell but is not assigned for pay and promotion purposes unless through a Pentagon option of a program such as holding a billet space and very well might have their Division HQs as the 101st but that’s a different animal - I doubt it, due to most reserve medical staff assigned to a Medical Reserve Unit and not an Active Duty Unit due to the supervision and money allocated for pay etc,. It all must come from from other funding as well.
But what do I know, I’m Retired! (I would still call BS)!!!

My father was in the101st and I grew up near Fort Campbell. Rest his soul. As a Marine veteran, I have never heard of a nurse joining the reserves as a LTC. Maybe it might happen if he were a surgeon with a critical shortage focus in the OR. Not sure but. I'd say fraud. What he's done doesn't rise to the level of stolen valor. However, it does display certain character flaws and you should avoid this fake. I would not call him a friend after such a deception.

The only way I could see the "direct commission" as a 0-5 is if he joined a state defense force who generally fall under a states military department. They don't deploy, aren't federally REC'D, and are basically professionals (like DOCs) who support the state military mission and or national guard. I don't know how they "decide" what rank you get, but I've never seen any of them wear less than CPT.

I was a medic and 91B for most of my 22 years in the Army. I knew of 2 medical doctors coming in as 0-6 on rare occasions with no prior military experience and I have known LTC Nurses in the Medical field--both men and women. 101st Airborne is an active duty unit with jump training and tons of prep training I thought. Makes no sense to me what he saying. He might have joined an North Carolina Reserve/Guard unit near Ft Bragg but it sounds fishy to me too! Unless he has a medical specialty in great need.

Without any specialized education it doesn’t seem likely he was brought in as a LTC.

I retired as a TAR (training and administration of Reserve) officer. Our reservists were associated with an active duty unit. When the active duty command was deactivated so was the reserve unit.

Let's critically analyze this knowing that AMEDD does bring in people and give them constructive credit on rank... sometimes even up to COL... based on civilian education and experience in that field.

First, he's a nurse. Constructive credit is given to nurses. I went through OBC (now BOLC) with some nurses who were given the rank of O4 based on constructive credit, and they achieved O5 shortly after OBC.

Next, the word "just". That is not a well defined term regarding timeframes. Just could be a day ago, a week ago, even up to a year ago. The question is, how long ago did he join?

A BSN. Frankly, with the Reserve you could be a LTC with just a BSN. Compo 1 looks more at MSN RNs for LTC. But a BSN in the Reserve is possible, along with constructive credit work history, to be a LTC.

Additionally, what kind of RN? Is he a run of the mill 66H, or is he more specialized as a 66E, 66F, etc.? Those AOCs only require additional certification. If he is a specialized RN, he could be a LTC as long as he has the constructive credit. It actually makes it more likely that he was given constructive credit.

Yes, the 101st is a Compo 1 unit by command. However, there are Army Reserve units which support specific Compo 1 units and, therefore, also wear that patch. So this is still a possibility.

Finally, not on AKO or Enterprise. That's where I get suspect. AKO and Enterprise are a requirement. This could also help define the timeframes of "just", as stated above.

Do this, tell him you think you have an opportunity for him and would like to get his name over to your S1 for consideration. Give him your enterprise email address and tell him that you can only discuss this opportunity with him through official government channels, that a response from him can only come from another mail.mil account. Sometimes it takes a little bit to get enterprise email established for new Soldiers. He may surprise you and actually send that email. If he does, ask basic questions like his AOC, BOLC grad date, etc. Tell him you are passing the info to your S1, and then give it to the S1 to see if there is an opportunity. If there is none, say that there isn't at this time, but if there is one then you just helped a Soldier out.

If he sends you information over any other email, then you can be pretty certain he's lying and you can call him out on it.

1) 101st is an active duty unit...not Army Reserve.
2) The only Nurse Corps Billets in an Infantry Division are Brigade Nurses (CPT Slot). Unless he's an NP then maybe a drug deal was cut for a BAS, but I doubt it.
3) With a BSN he is almost certainly coming in as a 2LT. He would never be a LTC with a BSN. A Master's Degree is a discriminator for people who worked their way through the ranks. For someone off the street, it's not happening.

I was an enlisted person for 24 years before I was commissioned. (E7). I was a BSN Nurse when commissioned to 1LT. (I never saw 2LT) When I finished my masters, I was promoted to CPT.

As for DOR, my DOR for CPT is before my DOR for SFC due to constructive credit.

This is a bit off subject, but a close friend was a Navy JAG stationed at Norfolk. Prior to 9/11, some Navy personnel were apparently selling "retired military" ID cards so that civilians could get on base and shop at Commissaries. One card user got caught, after a number of years because he got tired of being a major and decided to promote himself to general. He was going to be tried for fraud (using the Commissary) but after a forensic audit, going back five years, the AG's office could only prove $30 in losses due to his Commissary purchases.

CPT, sounds like he is a poser. If he received a direct commission because of being a nurse, the highest he would go is CPT. This is usually reserved for Doctor's and this happens after they complete the basic course. As a reservist, he could only be assigned to the 101st if he was in an Individual Mobilization Augmentee slot. I doubt he is since as an IMA, he would be most likely assigned to the headquarters. So, to sum this up, this dude is full of crap.

They are all over. They are fairly easy to spot. I received a thing in my email from Together We Served ( Coast Guard ) and someone shared his Reflections. I started reading it and all was fine. The he started telling about his time in Vietnam and my blood started to boil. It was all BS. I read through it three times, then went to his profile and checked his ribbon rack. When I saw that, I pretty near exploded. Ribbons he should have had, he didn't have, but to top it off, he was should the Navy Surface Warfare Badge. Those things are a NAVY award and NOT awarded to Coasties. He had been there the same time I was and had worked the same area that I had worked ( we moved around ). He also got out the same time I did. He was showing the Overseas Deployment Ribbon, but NOT the Sea Service Ribbon. Neither existed at the time we got got out. I have them, but only because I requested a DD215 and they were awarded Retroactively ( BOTH of them ), plus some others and a correction to one. I messaged him and let him have it, then notified the Admin. He wasn't too happy and let me know about it. Got so POed I just flat told him he was a liar. Got an Email from a Retired Coastie Commander that was a Vietnam vet and had picked up on it as well and messaged him as well as Notified the Admin. The last I heard, the Admin had requested a copy of his DD214. Had two uncles that retired from the Army, and I have picked up on a few. If he has a BS in Nursing, that would put him in the Nurse Practioner category usually. If he had just Joined the Army Reserves, that wouls still require Basic Training and at that age, they wouldn't take him. Going from Active Duty to the Reserves is another thing.

I’m prior AD Navy, then had a long break in service. Now, I’m now a CA ARNG LTC(P), MC(FS), MEDCOM Cdr & State Surgeon. I agree with all prior entries... 2+2 does not equal 4 here. Besides, anyone from AMEDD Officer recruiting can tell you that I mind in via direct commission as an O5 takes special approval, and is not the norm. Despite having left the Navy as a fairly senior O4, I was still brought back in as a direct commission as an O4 into the Army, even with many years of constructive credit, for the reason outlined. I’ve had to make rank the old fashioned way... I earned it.

There appear to be a couple red flags, or red herring fishing tro say the least.. To the best of my knowledge, AMMED doesn't have positions he is describing. If he were in the USAR that he would be in a reserve unit and same to ARNG.. Those two generally speaking do not have enough medical resources to give them away. I have also never observed a nurse coming in as a LTC. I have observed many doctors igive Maj and LTC. being given Major and LTC due to their prior MD time.!. Now there is the AKO issue. If he he has retired he has to have an account. How else would he check his make admin changes to his record? He is full of it!!

I just left the Nurse Corps. FIrst of all, if he "just" joined, he must have had an age waiver because the cutoff age for Commission when i did it in 2013 was age 42..he is 45! Secondly, new joins start at 2LT unless they are an experiencsd RN in a critically low specialty...and even then they sure as heck don't start off as a LTC! I call BS on your fake friend. Yes, if he's in the Army Reserve, he can't be in the 101st unless he's deployed with the 101st. I also doubt that the Army would direct commission him to O-5 as a nurse. No because in the medical field you can enter the service in rank as high as O-6 if you have in demand skills and the army agrees to appoint you to that position. I had a doctor who entered as an O-6 cause he was a board certified cardiac surgeon and the army offered him an appointment as a COL. It's not unheard of so please do you're homework before you slander a person's service to their country with no evidence of wrong doing. But if you have proof of a forged transcript or other fraudulent behavior then by all means go ahead. I made Corporal with less than a year because in times of war, anyone can be appointed to a command position at the discretion of the armed forces.

While no one 'just' joins and is a LTC. Now, what he ~could~ have meant and expressed poorly is that he just went over or to the reserves from being regular active for many years.

Certain Reserve and National guard units are 'affiliated' with the 101st Airborne and wear their patch. So the unit bit is marginally passable.

Ask this old friend where and when he attended basic and officers school and what his MOS is. Most poseurs screw themselves up with not being able to answer the simple questions and no understanding the process for promotions.

He could be in a USAR unit that supports the 101 at the Ft Campbell Hospital. 45 is about the right age to be an 0-5 over 20. Most officers are actually Reservist on active duty. Doctor/Medical and Jag do authorize age waivers in special cases. But Initial entry would be CPT with only a BS, a Masters almost to PHD or possibly a PHD with an exceptional required distinct qualification in a very rare skill set would maybe change things to an 0-4, but the highest initial entry I have ever heard of is CPT due to required leadership courses,and a BS in nursing is common. Ask him where he trained, anywhere other than BAMC in San Antonio and you know he is making it up.

Yes, it smells fishy, but not completely implausible. Back in the 1990's the Army was facing a critical nursing shortage and waived age restrictions to join up. They gave constructive service credit for years of civilian professional experience. A good friend was a nurse-midwife in her mid-40's who got a direct commission as a senior MAJ in the ANC. She was in the zone for LTC 2 years later, eventually made BG, and was one of the first nurses to be a hospital commander.

So your acquaintance may have been directly commissioned as a senior MAJ or even a LTC.

As far as a Reserve Officer serving in an AD unit...many who join the reserves find themselves activated (willing or surprised) and in the Army Medical Department, reservists are often used.in stateside military hospitals to backfill Active Duty health professionals who populate the deployed medical units. He may actually be serving at Blanchfield Army Hospital, in which case he is not assigned to the 101st but to Health Services Command, which staffs that unit.

I would take up the MSG's offer who works @ Campbell to ask your acquaintance what ward or clinic they are assigned and then have the MSG check him out.

Sooner or later that will be found out to be either legit, or straight to a courts martial. If he has been a lifer and wore the Screaming Eagle, then joined Army Reserves to dedicate more time that is admirable. I hope everything is on the up and up. Sadly, a fellow I know locally tried denying my own Son's record in the U.S Marines. This fellow was in the Navy and I heard someone say he was formally a Navy Seal. I don't know about him, but I pined for my Son and his fellow Marines and Naval Corpsmen who were in Hit and Haditha Iraq in 2005. 45 Marines and 2 Naval Corpsmen made the ultimate sacrifice, so I KNOW my Son was there and served in the battle zone. I think it is best to not jump to assumptions that might make you ashamed instead of the other person. I am a biker and served with Vietnam Veterans and am great friends with Vietnam Veterans MC, which is an international Motorcyle Club. It is really pathetic that some person who has never served would try and make themselves out to be something they never served/deserved to be called, and I do know it happens, but thankfully I have never seen an example of it here in Cleveland Ohio. Is is very possible he is telling the truth. Medical professionals accessions can be given a relatively high rank in order to get them in the military. For example, the military needs a surgeon. They find one volunteer but the recruiters have to find a way to sweeten the deal since the doctor is highly qualified and experienced. So that they get better pay, the military branch can make them just about any rank they want.

I would say no to that. its B/S first the 101st AIRBORNE dose not have Reserve units as far as I know. the only 101st Reserve unit is from the 26th (YANKEE) Infantry DIVISITION and is part of the MA. ARMY NATIONAL GUARD. if you asked me what unit I would say Co. C 1st 101st INFANTRY 26th Div. MA. ARMY National Guard in my time 1981 to 1987 they let some come in with rank from School & R.O.T.C. but that is all on your DD214 or the equivalent from the Nat. Guard is the NGB-22 it has the same information on them like my DD214 only has my active duty on it basic training AIT & some extra training from 17 march 1982 to 11 Aug 1982 HONORABLE DISCHARGE from active duty back to my MA. National guard unit my NGB-22 Discharge has everything on it from taking my OATH on 10 DEC 1981 to my Discharge 09 DEC 1987 so if you have any doubt about and he is a friend ask him to show you his paper work or an Military ID that will have his discharged rank on it

Captain: I knew LTCs and COLs in the medical branches while in the CARNG and USAR; however, generally, very few officers received direct commissions to LTC (0-5) unless they were highly-qualified and had extraordinary qualifications (e.g., brain surgeons, tenured physicians, etc.). Additionally, I knew one stellar Army nurse and she was a LTC and was later only two of 200+ nurses to make colonel. I also doubt he would be assigned to the 101st ABN DIV as an officer LTC in USAR unless he belongs to a reserve unit directly affiliated with that division, which is possible. I think a 45 year-old nurse with a BS degree is more likely to be inducted with a direction commission to CPT or MAJ (based on age and experience). Since you don't know for sure, I would do more research before you make the call. Direct commission officers are given an orientation course and perhaps, if he was actually recruited, he has not attended formal training yet and I suppose it is possible he bought a LTC rank tab by mistake. Great topic. There are a lot of imposters out there but it pays to be cautious before accusing someone of such a big impropriety; however, if I was to bet my paycheck on it, I'd bet he is out of line. The Army has a speciality recruiter program for nurses. These are specifically Nurse Recuriters and your every day field recruiter usually won’t touch a qualified nurse. I do know that there are a lot of benefits and perks that go along with being recruited as a nurse but you would need to talk to a nurse recruiter to see if someone can be brought on as on O-5. Getting on AKO account is something that takes processing so even that could be true. If he JUST joined the Army Reserves, he could still be sifting through who he is assigned to and what his duties and duty assignment would be. He could even be activated as a USAR Nurse Officer (similar to 2LT’s that graduate from ROTC and OCS.

Bottom line is, there are too many IFs to give a definite answer about his status. It would take some answers to specific questions.

CPT Salisbury, a few things come to mind concerning your question: 1.) He is purposefully joking with you - if he has that kind of relationship with you. 2.) Perhaps he has a medical degree or is specialized as a Nurse with advanced training and education to have received a Direct Commission in the Reserves. 3.) Is he with DHS-CBP wearing LTC rank - the same as GS13 and GS14 "rank" worn on CBP uniforms... their Agents and Officers sometimes wear military style uniforms and flight suits?

Hopefully he knows better than to try to convince anyone he is a Field Grade Commissioned Officer if he is not playing a prank. That would constitute a violation of Impersonating a Military Officer which is a federal crime.

Docs, nurses, physical therapists, psychologists & dieticians are often direct commissioned. My old USAR unit had about 1/2 a doz officers, ranking from O-6 to O-3 that had never been to basic training when DS/DS broke out & were hustled off to basic training in San Antonio. One of them, a cardio-thoracic surgeon O-6, was then deployed to FT Bliss for about 3 months. He had a big practice at a teaching hospital in Tucson, & flew home almost every weekend, did scheduled heart surgeries (often very complicated ones) & back to El Paso for the Army on Sun evenings. Both his civilian & Army bosses accommodated the schedule & I think he had only a few days off in 3 months time. For both the Army & civilian sectors, his skill set was far too valuable to not bend a few rules to keep him in each organization.

The medical officer corps, in the past, have put together some tremendous recruiting programs; like skill sets...dentists, specialty docs, et. al. This could be such a case.

It is possible but not probable.
Some are direct commissioned at higher ranks because of special skills and experience.
it happens more during war times, Pece time's.
You may want to ask him about O.C.S. And how if was commissioned. Then say somthing like how cool it would be to see His O.C.S. Class photo or his commissiioning paper work.

Colonel is a very high in the Army Nurses Corp.It would be strange of not identifying the medical unit he served in first, not the Division. While there are medical units in reserve I again doubt if they would have a Lt. Colonel and I doubt if a Reserve Nurse would be assigned to a very deployable unit like the 101st. Air Assault Division. For the combat wound who net up at an eva hospital and you can over heard the Doctor yelling for blood, this guys almost out and you had an honest Surgeon a Major Moore in my cans when ask will i make it, I'll hones you have less the 50-50 but don't give up now count backwards start with 100, I got to 89 and the nest the I knew I woke up and starring in my face was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen an Army Nurse, for a moment I thought I was sent and went to heaven she said something,it destroyed the whole image, I was only in heaven for a few moments, I was back in the Army and I vomited. Until you have been there you don't know the feeling, it is far better the looking at a child for the first time.

A Nurse would be assigned not to the 101st, but to a hospital or clinic. Hospitals do not fall under the 101st, but are a separate command, under the Med Corps and the Surgeon General.

Back in the late 1980s, my brother was an internist and surgeon who had been practicing medicine for almost 30 years and was in his early 50s. His only military experience was ROTC as an undergraduate at the University of the Philippines and as an artillery forward observer in the Philippine Army Reserve while a medical student. But a USAR hospital unit where he lived in Michigan offered him a commission as a Lieutenant Colonel based solely on his medical experience. (He ended up deciding he was too old for that sh!t!)

But I don't know what the state of the USAR Medical Corps or Nurse Corps is like these days.

Like some of the others have said - could he make it up to O-5, yes possibly, but I don't see him coming in as an O-5. It would depend on how long he has been a nurse. I was medically retired from active duty in 2011 as a MAJ. At that time, to make LTC you needed a year as a Head Nurse and a Master's degree. I had checked that second box after I completed the Army Baylor Program, and received my MHA. H ad the Army not taken my uniform away, I would have made it in MAR 2013. Such is life.

it sounds like BS, however -I'm a retired Medical Service Corps Officer - I have seen a few MD's come in as O-5/O-5 select. These are MDs with significant professional experience, not nurses. I worked in Navy Medical Department Officer selection many years ago and I can see a nurse, probably with a Master's Degree, come in as an O-4, but I never saw a non-Doc (MD/DO/DDS) come in as an O-5.

There are many exceptions given to those with degrees in the medical field, such as not having to attend leadership schools, etc., especially in the reserves or national guard. Now, I know the reserves have been extremely broken since at least the mid-90;s, as Colin Powell actually talked about eliminating the reserves and moving all of the resources and unit structures to the national guard, however, I have NEVER seen anybody brought in higher than a Captain. That includes Jag Officers and Medical Doctors. I know there was a time where they were bringing RN's in as Captains, but LTC's, NEVER. I believe they are not allowed to bring somebody in at a field grade regardless of their skills, unless he was an 0-4 or above with a naval service, or Air Force. If he's wearing the puking buzzard, 101st Airborne patch, then he is completely FoS, no reserve unit wears an AD patch, and I am 99% that there is no 101st Reserve Unit.

I got out in 1989, and, to the best of my knowledge, the 101st Airborne (Air Assault ;-) ) is not a reserves unit, nor has been since WWI.

As for the medical profession getting in at an elevated officer rank, quite possible. But an RN getting a LTC? Sounds implausible to me. As a full PHD/MD, sure.

I could be wrong, though. Always apply Occam's Razor to any story.

He may be a direct commission. Many professions (i.e. lawyer, nurse, doctor etc..) can come in as O-3,4,5's depending on civilian skills and experience nd the "needs of the service." As for not being on AKO or global directory that means nothing. I know and have served with a lot of people whose names don't show up in GAL, AKO etc. I was listed as an O-2 forever even after being promoted to O-4. I would not be too quick to say he is faking. Some of us have had non-traditional career paths that may, on the face look like they are making it up but in fact is reality.

I was a staff officer as well; I was a Chaplain. As such, I went through abbreviated officer's training for Chaplains, Doctors, and Lawyers; at the time it was called Air Force Officer's Orientation Course and lasted two weeks. It is probably the quickest commissioning program the Air Force had at the time. Active duty and Reservists were in it. I was a Reservist assigned as an Individually Manned Augmentee (IMA) to an active duty unit. Since I was fresh out of seminary I only came in as a First Lieutenant. Those who were older and had more experience came in at higher ranks, but the highest I in our class was a doctor who came in as a Captain.

So ... I can see them coming in as a Reservist. At age 45 they probably got their degree when they were 22, so that gave them 23 years experience as a Nurse, so I can see them coming in at a higher rank. I assume that the Army has an IMA program equivalent for reservists so I can see them being assigned to an active duty unit.

Let's say that person's nursing expertise was in something the Army was critically short of, like maybe a Nurse Anesthesiologist or maybe a Surgical Nurse. In that case the Army might have offered a higher rank as an enticement to come in. Our youngest daughter was born in an Air Force hospital (March AFB, CA) and the doctor who delivered her came into the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel. She was from South America and English was definitely her second language, but there she was.

So, could your acquaintance actually be a Lieutenant Colonel reservist attached to an active duty unit? Yes, they could. But could they also be full of fecal excrement and not be what they claimed? That also could be true.

From what you have told us it is impossible to know for sure.

Yes it does. To get a direct comission as an Ltc. One would have to be an MD. Or in some field extreemly vital to national defense. A Nursing degree with no previous notary experience would likely not merit 0-5 rank upon comissioning.
Without previous military service his age would also work against him especially for an Active Duty assignment such as the 101 Airborne Division. Ask to see his ID Card and his LES leave and earning statement.

Medical and other professions that require a higher level of education and experience may be given ranks that may coincide with their age and professional experience. You don't expect a Brain Surgeon who is 45 yrs old to be a 2nd LT? Medical personnel have a little lee way when it comes to joining at a later age. The 101 AB is a reserve unit? Sorry I don't buy that part, but it could be an active duty for training situation as a reservist filler. Almost anything is possible such as Major to Five Stars in short order—Eisenhower. The instant ranks are assigned with waivers as to eligibility for retirement and future promotion etc. Since officers are Commissioned and serve at the pleasure of the President (read Executive Branch) the needs of the service as determined by a Service Secretary determine who and when get the nod unless a specific law applies. Regulations reflect law but are not in and of themselves law (legislation). As to 101st AB, not my area.

Sadly there are a number of vets who claim things not true. A friend lost her husband, a retired United pilot, had been a Navy pilot and claimed to have flown Hueys in Vietnam and landed on ships at sea. He died of a disease listed under Agent Orange. Was helping her try to claim a VA surviving spouse allowance. I asked her to find his flight logbook. Sadly the record really damaged his reputation. He only piloted/crewed EC-121 Super Constellations Navy Surveillance aircraft, not even close to a Huey or even over Vietnam. The EC121 was equivalent to a huge TWA four engine airliner.

I have seen physicians come in as an O-5, it is rare. A BSN with 20 years of experience might get you to come in as an O-4. maybe.
Ask to see his CAC. However, I have seen fake CACs that are made to impress/fool civilians.

No offence to Nurses but they are a "dime a dozen." The chances of being direct commissioned as a LTC for most Nurses is zero. If this one is a Nurse Practitioner it's possible, but not likely. It's of course possible to have been attached to the 101 and thus have a right arm patch that says "Airborne," but not likely. It's far more likely that for this guy it's Halloween every day. If he's not on AKO he is not currently serving. He's not been in long enough for a retirement either so I think you're right... it stinks.

It is possible. The Army does have recruiters (at HRC, Ft Knox) that recruit those special skills from the civillian community .
I've seen them several times come on active duty as a Captain through Colonel.
Mostly in the medical field.
The guy recruited as a Colonel was an experienced neurosurgeon.

The last Army Reserve unit attached to the 101st was the 101st Airborne Division Detachment in September 2006. In theory, he could join the reserves at 45 through an AMED recruiter but with only a bachelors in nursing, he’d likely come in as a CPT at best. He’d have to be a Neurosurgeon or some very highly specialized or critical shortage doctor to come in as a LTC. But since you can’t find him on global or AKO, he’s likely a fake.

LTC is a bit much; however, the reserves have opening for which they fill based on experience, so your friend could have dumb-lucked into one of the jobs [your friend would be a Civil Service Employee during the week and a LTC on the weekend the duty is performed]. I met a E-5 who was in the Reserves and who also worked Civil Service. One day I see him and he was wearing E8 stripes [I was shocked to say the least]. He was a "Reserve Technician" and had been promoted to a Reserve slot of E-8; however, his Civil Service position was WL-3. After a number of years his Civil Service position was upgraded to reflect the military rank. So...YES, IT COULD HAVE HAPPENED IN THE RESERVES.

Could he be an IMA attached to an AD unit? Also, I heard you can join the reserves in a medical profession with a higher rank, but as an 0-5 seems a bit high unless he is a Dr. 03-04 seems more appropriate unless he is a nurse practitioner, but still seems off.

Nurses, Docs, Physical Therapists ALL.can be direct commissioned into the Army AMEDD. Their rank, at commissioning, depends on multiple factors; age, years of professional service, advanced degrees (MSN or PhD in Nursing &/or Public Health), published professional research, National/global academic research positions held, etc. yes, he could have been direct commissioned as an LTC.

I could be wrong, but I think by Federal statute you have to be able to get 20 years of service in by age 55, so 35 would be the cut off date. Joining at 45 at such a high rank, even for medical people with an age waiver (unless he was a neuro-surgeon and the service was desperate for neuro-surgeons) does sound very fishy. Actually it’s a Federal offense to impersonate an officer. If he insists, ask him to produce his appointment orders.

Not Likely. I have seen surgeons, cancer specialist and certain other specialties come in at Major and maybe LTC. Any regular doctor comes in as a Captain ... the way to verify is aske for his/her ID.

Fish story! To direct commission as an O5 he would have to have exceptional education and experience. Also over 39 yrs old needs age waiver. All this would take years to complete before he could be in Reserves or Active component. I base this on my daughter’s experience. She has MSN and NP with over 15 years nursing experience. Direct commission into Navy Reserve as O3. Took almost a year to get through application process.

Sounds suspect, shouldn't be hard to verify unfortunately thier are dishonest people running around pretending to something thier not, it happens in the civilian world as well, I uncovered a person running for political office claiming to be a retired undersheriff ,2nd highest ranking person in sheriffs department, he had fake credentials etc., turned out he retired from county as a dog catcher/animal control officer, info was released and he was never seen again

Well, the Nurse Corps WILL take you up to 55 years old. I’d get a letter from them (Army and Navy mostly) about once a year (I’m over 55 now). AND if he has an MSN + roughly 15 years of experience, a direct commission to LTC is possible (they won’t start him as a Butter Bar). And it’s POSSIBLE he’s in a medical unit attached to the 82nd. So, the whole scenario is possible. Ask him (DON’T Prompt him) what the Post Hospital is called (Womack Army Hospital) or what unit he’s with. 44th Med Brigade is made up of: 28th Combat Support Hospital, 248th Medical Detachment, Veterinary Service Support, 257th Dental Company (Area Support), 261st Multifunctional Medical Battalion, 1st Area Medical Laboratory, 14th Combat Support Hospital and the 53rd Hospital Center. Army Reserve standards for medical personnel work a little differently. You get constructive credit for time spent civilian side in the various clinical specialties.
It doesn't impact your credit towards TIS or retirement, but it also allows a nurse whose spent a decade working in an OR from being subordinate to an RN who's spent the last 2 years working a medication cart on night shift at the local nursing home while drilling one weekend a month.
While I'm uncertain of the conversion rate, I'm also fairly certain there's wiggle room for specific certifications and experience. At 45, it's feasible your friend has held a license as an RN for 22-23 years. Throw in real world career in a critical specialty... say as an ER nurse in a Level I Trauma Center or as an OR nurse in a cardiothoracic surgical center, along with the professional development accreditations considered standard for that field of practice, and its feasible the USAR saw fit to commission them at a field grade rank. A long time ago, the Chief of Nursing at the Hospital Unit (Surgical) was an O-5, and I BELIEVE she'd been commissioned as such specifically to stand up the unit.

This just popped up on my feed. Do you have an update since it is now 3 years later? Of course this is fishy as the 101st is an active duty unit, so it is possible that he joined the reserves and then got called to active duty, particularly in a Med Services field, but he should appear somewhere in AKO or the Enterprise system. When I left active duty, AKO hadn't been implemented. When I joined the Reserves, years later, I had an active AKO ID and a CAC within a few days of getting the paperwork settled and getting enrolled in DEERS. Another question that comes to mind is what prior service did he have? I assume you would know of that. You don't just get commissioned as a LTC. A good friend of mine was in the Reserves, Medical Services Corps. He was a Captain at the time he received his BS in nursing. He tried to join the Nurses Corps and was told he would have to resign his current commission as a Captain and start again as a 2LT in the Nurses Corps...of course he didn't do this.

I was teaching Officer Advanced classes and had a Major in my class who had been on active during WW2 (this was in the 80s), got his doctorate in psychology and 40 years later joined the USAR. Nice guy and didn’t have to be there, just wanted to learn more. Was scheduled to pick up LTC in 2 years

I was a Health Care Recruiter. It is totally possible for a Medical professional to come in as anything from a 2LT to an Col. I brought a Doctor in as an LTC BUT he had prior service, had a doctorate in medicine and tons of experience. A nurse with a BS as an LTC, highly unlikely but possible as maybe a Nurse Practitioner with tons of experience. Tricky one here, all determined by education and experience. Without further information, I would say Red Flag.
