Can anyone explain or help me understand the Internment / Resettlement Specialist (31E) MOS?

Some time ago I received an email pointing out a new MOS I was told. It may or may not be true but there are several recent factors that play into this and draw concern to many in the public. This became an issue when the positions were domestic, the UN position filled has since created a reaction force comprised of multiple nations and here again this position is domestic. Clarity would be awesome.

Seems like the Army Internment/Resettlement Specialist position has been part of the Army since before teh civil war as they guarded stockades, jails and prisons PO3 Brad Phlipot.
This position seems to fit within the MP structure of prison guards in military prisons on military bases and places like Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo Bay, etc.

This MOS was the old MP Corrections MOS 95C. When they changed all MP MOSs to the 31 CMF, they changed the name to Internment and Resettlement (or there abouts). The name change might have happened latter, but it is still pretty much the same MOS. During GWOT the Army started allowing Soldiers to enlist in it, prior to that you could only transfer into after you were an E4 (they used to be all NCOs). The Army also added some resettlement tasks to their MOS.

It's no longer internet resettlement specialist. I have been a 31E for about 6 years (reclass from regular MP). It is now called "Corrections and Detention". We work in confinement facilities such as Leavenworth, Regional Confinement Facilities, GTMO, and detainment facilities for EPWs in theater. There is nothing new about this.

So the 31E used to be a 31C. Or as we affectionately like to call them in the MP world, "Cage Kickers." They do several things. POW detaining, they run the stockade for US military personal, they may work in places like the Sudan in camps helping refugees find new places to live. Mostly it is working prisons of some sort. I know guys that love it and I know others that hate it.

Be very leery of any UN mission. They usually are a show of force and don't have much bite. It is a bureaucracy where life and death decisions are made in days, not minutes. If you ever have a mission brief where the contingency plan is to "Call the UN for a QRF". Read that as, "You' are own your own."

Internment/resettlement battalions have 3 missions: to run a U.S. confinement facility in theater; to run an EPW/civilian detainee facility in theater; or run a refugee/disaster relief facility. Here's the doctrine:

I wonder how many people would worry about this if they stopped and thought logically for a second that humans are the ones occupying the jobs not robots. You can title an MOS Kill You Neighbors and the human being occupying that MOS still has to hate freedom and humanity enough to carry it out. It's like everyone assumes all servicemen do anything they are asked without question of legality or morality. The worst part is all of the FEMA camp and UN and apparently 31E conspiracy theorizers are the same people saying "ban Muslims" like those citizens don't have rights because you don't like them.

As SFC Private RallyPoint Member can attest I am sure, there is a huge difference between guarding prisoners and regular police work. There is definitely a need for specialized training above and beyond what a regular MP would do.

The idea behind that job title was much of the wartime mission for these units would be running prison camps for enemy POWs (internment) and camps to feed and house civilian refugees (resettlement)

POW/CORRECTIONS...My sons were 31E's and went to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and Camp Humphries, South Korea respectively. They both ended up at Fort Leavenworth Kansas! My youngest had a difficult time with it. He told me it is a default MOS for the Army, which means when people are washed out of other different MOS's they end up as 31E's. There is no esprit de corps because no one wants to be there. Plus you are working in a Prison, whether Military or civilian, they are very dangerous places to be in. He said they are mostly murderers and child molesters.

31E's are POW GUARD/CORRECTIONS...My sons went to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (POW Guard) and Camp Humphries, South Korea (Corrections) respectively. They both ended up at Fort Leavenworth Kansas (Corrections)! My youngest had a difficult time with it. My older son got a 36 month commitment which included BCT and AIT. He ended up on a war fighter team and got out of the jail and into an office typing. He basically worked out everyday at LVW so it was easier for him. He took the 31E because from the day he entered the service until the time he left it was only 2 years 10 months with two months terminal leave vacation time. My other son got a 3 year and 4 month commitment, and he did it all in the Prison. I can be contacted at [login to see] ...
