Can anyone provide the pros and cons of the (Texas) oil and gas industry? What is the hiring process?

SFC Private RallyPoint Member When the Space Shuttle program ended in 2011, I retired because I was 62. Many of my coworkers switched over to the oil and gas industry because there were jobs if you had the right training. Here is some information that might help. Good luck.

Not sure but if you have any connections for jobs overseas I would much appreciate some help networking to them. Preferably as a security guard or grunt work.

Cons - The industry has always had peaks and lows in commodity prices. When the commodity prices are low a lot of people get laid off.
Pro - Good pay and benefits, opportunity to travel, most oil & gas companies prefer ex-military as employees.

The hiring process is really dependent on the company and position that you are applying for. I would suggest doing some research on http://www.rigzone.com. The oil & gas industry in starting to recover from the resent low commodity prices. Currently the majority of companies, that are hiring are looking to bring back experienced employees that had been laid off. As the industry continues to recover, I would expect companies to start hiring entry level positions again.

I live and work in Odessa, TX. Right in the middle of the Permian Basin. I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have. As to the "hiring process" it's much like anywhere else you go. Submit a resume or application, get an interview, get hired. It ALL depends on your skill set. Do you have a CDL drivers license? I know a LOT of people here in the oil field.
