Can I cancel my Army Reserve contract?

I am transitioning out of the Army but signed up for reserves. Originally I did so because I knew that I would miss being in, but I experienced some situations that made me feel as though it was time to go. After counseling, I decided that it would not be mentally conducive (I was assaulted twice and yes, I did report both incidences). When I went back to the recruiter, he told me that I was committed and that I would not be able to get out of the contract. Is this true?

Lord this is too vague. You do not that you are required to serve a total of 8 years- how that is split up is in your hands for the active duty part. As long as the active/IRR/NG USAR equals a total of 8 then you are done, unless you decide to stay later. As for a contract- Did you sign a Reserve contract? Yes- then you probably are stuck till you can talk to someone higher than the recruiter No- Then you thank him kindly and go home- making sure that your active unit knows you are asking for IRR, not USAR

I’m pretty sure until your contract begins (which it shouldn’t until you are released from active duty) you can rescind it.
