So back story:
I was talking with my PSG and PSG from a different company, and it came up that I could really use some rifle company time seeing as how I’ve been in a heavy weapons platoon for some time now. The PSG who is not mine said he would talk to his 1SG and see if they could use an nco. My PSG said he would talk to ours. Next thing I know my SGM is getting mad at me and said that I am back dooring him as well as my senior NCO’s and I am now going to s-3

As a former IG, what basis would you go to the IG for this issue? Soldiers always think the IG will tell a Commander what to do. That is the furthest thing from the truth. The IG will not do anything about this. This is a command issue. The IG will support the command and allow them to make a decision based on their needs 100 times out of 100!!!!

And of course your SGM is mad. If you feel you have a valid reason for wanting a different position you should always start at the lowest level and work your way up. Any movement within the BN of NCO's will of course require SGM approval. If it was within the company, your 1SG could have done that. Why wouldnt you approach your SGM/CSM about this? Put yourself in his/her shoes. Would you like oyur Soldiers talking behind your back about switching out of your team to move to another one without you even in the discussion? I dont think so. So why wouldnt your SGM/CSM feel the same way?

MSG (Join to see) - It requires the CSM's approval not SGM. Other than that you are spot on.

You think your SGM/CSM is mad now? Go to the IG without allowing them to address you and your issue, then see how mad he/she gets. WOW!

But to answer your original question of whether or not you can go to the IG for your "issue", the answer is ABSOLUTELY. Nobody can stop you from going to the IG. Now ask the question whether or not it will help you get what you want, that answer is ABSOLUTELY NOT. Many misconceptions out there and this is one of them.

You could use some staff time so that you get a better understanding of process.
From your CSM's perspective, he gets a call from another organization to either find out about your duty performance (no one wants to take on a troublesome soldier) and/or to find out when you can report and he hasn't heard anything from your either your Chain of Command or you concerning your desire to leave. Then your CSM calls a guy like me, which ideally he could have done before you put yourself out there, to find out his if moving you is doable and I tell him "SGM you're killing me, I am fighting for bodies and now I have to explain to manpower why we are just giving them away."
