Can I re-enlist if I have an RE3 code, had surgery done after getting out, and still have metal inside of me?

It will depend on the reason for the RE3 code. If the medical condition was healed by the surgery, even if you have metal in you, you may be able to go back in with a waiver. There are a lot of different factors that depends on, the foremost being if their is a current need for your MOS. Something to keep in mind is that it may be easier to get a waiver for reserve component (Guard or Reserve).

Well there are many factors that will determine if you will be able to come back in. First is the reason you are RE3. If the reason is medical, was that the surgery you had or is it a different medical problem? For medical RE code waivers, you need to prove that the condition is healed and will not cause you issues while in service. You will need to gather all medical documents including surgical and physical therapy. You will need a statement clearing you for military training from your doctor as well. Be able to answer the following:
-What happened/ what’s the medical issue?
-What treatment did you go through?
-What was the outcome of the treatment?
-How are you now? Can you do PT etc.

Also, make sure you provide any VA disability paperwork since this will impact elegibilty as well.
