Can I switch army reserve units if I moved almost 100 miles away from my current unit?

I recently moved almost 100 miles away from my current reserve unit and was wondering how the process works for trying to transfer to a closer unit somewhere else.

Find one that is local that has your MOS or generic slots. Just call them to get the information on openings. If you find one and they agree to take you , then get with your current unit to complete the transfer. I used to switch units often. I’ve been retired a while now, but I believe it is still the same.

Yes you can. Find a new unit and ask their commander to sign a DA 4651. They sign it and provide their unit information. You take it to your Chain of Command and ask to be reassigned.

As long as the closer unit has an open slot for you, and as long as both parties sign approval for transfer...yes you can.

2. Find out what units are close to you new location
3. Ask them if they can take you

Sign into the HRC website. Check for vacancies for your MOS. It will list them by state. If you see a vacancy contact that unit and see if the slot is open and they’d be willing to pick you up. If so then you can get the paperwork signed by your unit and their unit to transfer.

Other option is speak with your commander and see if you can get lodging in kind for your unit to still continue to meet battle assembly obligations. Other option might be if you can find a closer unit and they allow it you could see if you could RST with a closer unit if both your unit and your unit you want to do BA with allows it.

Is 100 miles supposed to be far? That's literally an hour and a half drive there and back once a month... I have spent several years driving 3-4hrs each way.

Driving 3 hours total once a month to drill is nothing in the grand scheme of things. If you like your current unit and have good prospects for career progression there, I wouldn't transfer just to save yourself a couple of hours each month.

Yes you can provided there is a vacancy in the one near you for your MOS. Otherwise you can use IDT to travel back and fourth to drill.
