Can I use Army issued gear for personal activities?

I have tried my Google-fu and come up short on a good answer... I would like to use my Plate carrier and some old deployment uniforms for personal firearms training courses. Is this allowed? Frowned upon?

I understand that I can’t use government property for commercial activities that I make money on but this doesn’t fall under that category since I wouldn’t be making money... I would just like to train on my own with the gear I have at my disposal rather than fork out hundreds of dollars for my own right now.

Thoughts?

I don’t think anyone would chastise another for using their fleece on a cold day or their issued sleeping bag to go camping...

Well...it is government property that you signed for. Perhaps if you sent this RFI to your S4 and maybe your Commander you will get a solid answer. Again...Army issued property that you signed for. That you are financially responsible for. Talk with your S4.

I don't have anything meaningful to contribute to this conversation, but I need to ask, when did they start issuing plate carriers to the band??!!??

Don't know AR regs, but it could go either way. If turned in as serviceable it may be your call. Your command would probably back you, unless you used them for misconduct. Double whammy there.

I would think that part of it would depend on the "durable issue".... There is some gear that is issued that is "accountable"....there is some that is issued that is "whatever".... If you have to account for it on any kind of inspection or gear turn in, I would use caution.... you break, you buy.... BUT, if it is like much of the gear I was issued (not plates or carriers)..... was not accountable to me "post deployment"..... that stuff became "mine".....

Is the activity on the training calendar? If not, don't. It's not your equipment, it's the governments. Mis-use of government property.
