Can I wear my Airborne and Air-Assault badges while in basic training?

I am going back to basic training as an E-4, after a few years out of the service. I am Airborne and Air Assault qualified...should I wear (if it's allowed of course) my patches...or should I just try to keep a low profile? What would you do?

I have sort of been there a couple of times. You are probably already going to stand out because I'm assuming your head will not be firmly planted up your fourth point of contact. Wearing the badges will probably just draw more attention than you really want second time around. Just be a sharp soldier and lead from the middle (until they figure it out and actually make you lead).

My recommendation- wear them proudly and provide new Soldiers an opportunity to ask you questions about them. For these new Soldiers, you will be the first Soldier they regularly interact with that isn't a Drill Sergeant and they will be little sponges. Wearing them with pride will give you an opportunity to share your experiences with them and an opportunity for them to learn from you and your Army experience.

Personally I'd wear them. As others have stated you have orders, so you're authorized to wear them. Wear them proudly and as others have said allow the other soldiers to soak in the good information and standards you represent.

I'm on the verge of returning to service myself. No, I will not be wearing my 3rd ID deployment patch, nor my CAB while in Basic. I also look ten years younger than my actual age. These will help me to not stand out.

I took a 5 year break after active duty and they just made me go to the warrior transition course for a month. I'm guessing it's changed since then if you're having to go back to basic. It could be a blessing in disguise though. Wouldn't mind a little basic training weight loss summer camp.

If you want the attention, wear them. Those are two giant targets for the flat hats. But remember while you're wearing them, those kids are going to be looking to you for everything. So remember the example you'll have to set.

You earned them, wear them proudly (if you WANT). You totally will be treated different, but not for the worse. When I went though, there were a few guys who came back after a while and they were actually pretty cool with them. The Drills know that you have done this before and won't treat you like a PVT. That being said, if you mess something up I'm sure they'll get on you harder because "you should know better".
It's up to you, I'm sure at first they'll give you crap about it but after all is said and done that will be the most of it.

Why do you want to show off to people whom you will know for 2 months, and then probably never see or hear from again? You’ve been through Basic once, so you already know what to expect: your age, demeanor, and military bearing will cause you to stand out. Because of that, more will be expected of you; much more will be expected due to your badges. You are undoubtedly proud of your accomplishments, but your Drill Sergeants may interpret it as arrogance. If your Drills accept you, Drills from other units may accuse you of being a Clothing Sales Warrior, and give you a hard time; don’t expect your Drills to come to your defense. I recommend that you bring them with you, but don’t wear them until you get a feel for the mood of the cadre and your fellow Soldiers. You haven’t asked about AIT, but I think you should definitely wear them there, since you won’t stand out as much.

Seeing a bit of back and forth on this one. Maybe a better question you should be asking is "should I ..." This is a decision no one but SPC Private RallyPoint Member can answer. Might I offer an option other than either or? Maybe during your time in basic you acquire and install these badges earned in prior service on your service uniform and not the uniform worn day-to-day during this time. You will still attract attention, but maybe not as much. Especially from the drills in other companies.

take your Drill SGT's by surprise wear them on your dress uniform for graduation from basic training. when I went through basic I had an Navy EOD and a Navy SEAL transfer in to the Army their file were sealed the drills were not allowed to view them until graduation. when we all graduated their were some extremely surprised Drill SGT's when they saw these guys uniforms most of who were non prior service already new who they were except for any and all of the Cadre.
wear them graduation and stay low and under the radar as much as possible you'll do great.

As others have said, you can. You're asking because you want to. The other option is laying low, but that can be difficult. You'd have to act a lot dumber than you are. Since you earned them and you won't be invisible anyway and you want to wear them, you should wear them.

When I went through basic (1968) we had a prior service soldier who was a 'Nam vet. He had his head on straight and the drills treated him with the respect that he had earned. My suggestion is to fore go wearing your skill identifier badges until 1.) graduation or 2.) the drills chew your a$$ for being out of uniform...

Many of my colleagues were AB, AA, Ranger BN amongst other fields. The thought process is to stay “sterile” with your uniform while in “the field” which is most of BCT. Many are about simply wearing a combat patch “if applicable” and proudly wear everything on graduation day. The instructors and cadre already know you are prior service- but you do you! By regulation YES they can wear it. But, can the Drill Sergeants tell you to take it off for uniformity reasons?, YES. You would have to take it off. When I graduated Air Assault school in 1994. I was a PFC. “Never Forget. I was #44” and the only thing we were allowed to wear in our uniform was US ARMY and NAME. (No velcro back then) we were not allowed to call each other by numbers only by name (no rank) instructors were allowed to call us by Name or helmet#. The reason behind it is because instructors are the one in charge. In my class we had a lot of brass. One group was like almost the whole BN STAFF. ( aka the officers klick). If they didn’t had the student (humble) mentality it becomes more dangerous for the students to absorb that vital information. Basic Training is no different. In fact you have never ever (unless they are guiding or Supervicing a platoon) during purchases at the PX. You will never see a Drill Sergeant by him self (off duty) with a smokey hat. There are rules , there are Regulations and there are Norms. (Norms are not writers is just things that work and can be replaced in a seconds notice). Like “No hat in the flight line” ask me that one!! LoL

Anecdotally , MCRD San Diego ,1976 . Platoon has an older recruit who after some weeks would join at invitation the DI's for a post lights out cup of joe and conversation . His performance was stellar and unlike the youngsters wasn't the object of incessant attention . At graduation ,he was wearing his CIB,Silver star,Bronze Star and assorted medals and ribbons . The recruits knew he was different , just not the how or why ...

Couple of questions. One, what is the Uniform of the Day in Basic? Will you be allowed to wear your SPC stripes (You may then outrank the Assist. D.I.). Do you have to maintain Qualifications for Airborne, and Air Assault. And what does the command recommend. I know, that even though I went into Boot Camp as an E-3, I wasn't allowed to wear the stripes until AFTER Graduation (This was 40+ years ago though...)

It depends. Do YOU want to stand out? If yes, than go ahead but be prepared for some envy (and undeserved harassment) from cadre who think you're just showing off. If no, doing your best in what you could call "a refresher course" will eventually lead to you standing out regardless. I already had earned a Marksman badge with the M-1 Garand in ROTC when I enlisted. I didn't put it on until the mid-cycle inspection. Two weeks lated, I qualified Sharpshooter with the M-14. I was lucky, none of the cadre felt the need to harass me.
Being prior service has both its pros and cons. Oftentimes, it depends on where you are and who the people training are. If you want to be in the front of the formation rather than in the rear eating everybody else's dust, it might help if you "accidentally" show that you already know how to march, the manual of arms and so forth. Just don't be arrogant about it. Also, if you feel comfortable with your drill sergeants, I would recommend that you ask them if it would bother them if you wore your jump wings and air assault badge.

It might be a good idea to keep a low profile in your combat uniform but, I would definitely wear them at graduation. Wearing them while in training may bring on a lot more pushups. I didn't find anything in AR 670-1 that says Badges must be worn,

As you should already know, in basic training no matter how right it is, it will never be right, that's just the nature of the beast. With your chest candy going into that environment you are going to be sought out for answers and right answers. Man, brother.... as an SGM and you gave the wrong guidance, stay off my grass is all I have to say. (humor attempt). By all means though, without getting in the weeds of the new revised AR 670-1, you earned them, you can wear them. I am not aware of any exceptions to basic training. I would make sure before you put that target on your back.

Unless something has changed in a significant way, if you've earned jump wings or bullwinkle wings, per AR 670-1, you're entitled to wear them. The question is - just how much attention do you want to attract. You will likely stand out to a point anyway as you'll have a tighter shot group than the others, figuratively speaking. I'd say don't wear them during basic to keep a lower profile but do wear them at AIT.

Just wear them since you've earned. You already draw attention as an E4/SPC. Lead from the front. Everyone in your platoon will get a chance to lead. Others will sponge off your experience, that would be part of your leadership while interacting with those recruits.

I went through Basic Training in Jan-Mar of 1973. I was very young (as were most of the trainees). We did have one older member of our platoon that indicated he was prior service. He was very helpful in helping use navigate the chaos of basic training. The day we graduated, in addition to his PFC rank he also wore his combat patch, three overseas bars, two rows of ribbons, CIB and jump wings. This would have been an unnecessary distraction during basic (in my opinion).

Was in an OCS class with several other prior service. We all agreed to now tip our hand early in the program. Finally forced it at the first uniform inspection. Some retaliation (although it would have happened with any excuse). but worked out well for us. head down, mouth shut, ears open.

They are going to know, as they will have your records. As long as you are squared away, proper airborne bearing, and not trying to be insulting with them, then yes absolutely wear them. But also make sure that they are worn correctly...spacing, location etc.

Keep it a low profile, They will find out soon enough. Perhaps at graduation. Even then I would discuss this w/ the Drill Sgt. beforehand whether it is ok to wear the insignia, but after BCT complete. One problem you may face is that your MPF may not contain a record of your achievements. If it doesn't then keep your memorabilia in a box, until you can straighten out your MPF.

Your choice...I remember as a young PV1 in AIT, we had a bunch of guys reclassing. A Spc, 2 Cpl's, and a Sgt. The SPC was from the 82nd Airborne and showed up all decked out in his Class A's with the beret. He was kind of an arrogant SOB and refused to take his beret off. After a lot of talks, he finally conformed to the AIT uniform. The other guys were from an Infantry Division and all had combat patches from Just Cause, but were really cool and accomodating. None of us knew what a patch on the right sleeve was for and they took the time to really educate us on the uniform and Army life in general.

You could play it one of two ways. Your authorized to wear them because you earned them. Wear them from the jump. Or show up at graduation in your dress uniform with all your awards and badges and shock your class. Your call. Your Drill Sergeants are going to already know your prior service when you get there

Granted I'm older than Noah but when I went back into the Navy after a two year break we didn't go through full boot camp but shorter reindoctrination, there we were required to wear the posted uniform of the day, the wearing of warfare badges Submarine Dolpins in my case was required. Of course that was in 1983 so things might have changed.

Been there done that. Don’t. Drills usually expect that you’ll either be 1. Helpful to the class , 2. Absolute trash who will traffic in contraband and generally make their lives hard. Avoid making a spectacle of yourself, unless one of them finds out you have these awards and tells you to wear them (happened to me and one other guy)
Help the guy to your left and right, keep your head down nobody is too grown to clean and do push ups. Try to make the drills lives a little easier by helping privates avoid asking stupid questions and doing stupid things. Help with stuff like inventory. It’ll pay off at the end. Believe me.

In BCT you should go in "slick sleeve" and be one of the group. Eventually they will figure it out and make you one of the "acting jack" leaders.
When I was in BCT, we had a college grad who had a couple years of ROTC and he tried to be one of the group until they looked at his file, then made him the "acting jack" CO.
In my case, after several years break, I was able to go back in with my old rank, but I did it through the Nat Guard/Reserve program. However i had to be up to speed with the PT and all the latest developments within the 1st year of be required to leave or go to BCT.

It will likely just draw attention to yourself. Could be good or bad. Your Drill Sergeants, and the ones in your company will know you're prior service, even if you don't say anything. They have your records and they'll notice you aren't a dumb kid (like we all were). There was a dude in another platoon in my OSUT company who was prior service, same MOS, 11B the first time too. The Drills didn't mess with him more than anyone else, but they didn't show him any special treatment either. They didn't mess with him as much as the other trainees, but that is probably because he didn't make the same stupid mistakes.
I met a dude who was wearing his jump wings because he had been an ROTC cadet who left (or dropped out of for whatever reason) college and enlisted. I don't think it made much of a difference to anyone other than at the very beginning when it impressed the new trainees and probably got him a little crap from the drills demanding that he explain himself. So meaningless after like the second day.
The biggest risk of a problem I can imagine would be if you're not in your company area, without any of your drills around and another NCO or officer thinks you're faking it and you have to deal with the mess.

My experience wearing my EIB as an E-2 when I went back in was that officers challenged me when I strolled through the PX or snack bar. I quit wearing it when I got my CIB in 'Nam.

Me personally, I wouldn't wear them because you might attract unwanted attention from the Cadre, Drill Sergeants and other Soldiers who might hate on you because you have something that they wish they had. Unless ordered by the Cadre or the Drill Sergeants, I would refrain from wearing them until after graduation.

You'll have enough questions from Joe about why you're wearing Spec. rank. The Drills will know you're prior service. Show up with the badges on day one, get smoked. You are allowed to wears them you just have to carry a copy of the orders or your DD214 showing that you earned them. Back in 91, I went to Ft. Bliss to reclass and there was an E-2 wearing airbourne, air-assault and a drill patch. He had earned them in the Army Reserve. He had to carry his orders with him to keep from catching hell. Basic should be a breeze for you this time. Most drills may be light on you seeing how you are prior service.

LOL, I knew a guy who had to go back through basic, but he had a Drill Sarget Patch. Too many years out of service, plus he was a reservist. He said he wore it, on his dress uniform and one set of ACU's.
Look at it this way, Do you think your Drill Sargent doesn't already know? I would ask them what they wanted you to do, but to be honest, you are supposed to wear it. If you decide to play it safe and not wear the badges, they might just call you out for that as well.
It's safer to ask and coordinate with them, rather than do what you want, and get called out for it. You'll still be a target, but if you are willing to show you want to work with them, the better chance you will have for leniency from them.
Odds are, they will tell you to wear them.

I would wait until graduation or until a drill asked why you weren't wearing them. You are going to attract unwanted attention. When I was in A.I.T. my senior drill knew I was going to jump school afterwards. I don't know if he tried and didn't make it or if it was because I was awarded an ARCOM for pulling a guy out of a pool and got him breathing again while on pass, but whatever the reason he singled me out and stayed on my ass constantly. Don't let these NCO's on here set you up for failure. You know where you have been and what you have earned. You don't have to impress anyone. Just be the squared away Airborne soldier that you are. Airborne All The Way.

Update* I just got back from BCT and I wasn't allowed to we wear rank not any badges and combat patch because I was an E-4. There was an E-6 also there in BCT and he was allowed to wear all his badges. The drills found out I was prior service the first week I was there hahahaha. The way they found out is because one of them asked me for my name... instead of me saying "Trainee and my last name" I said Specialist and my last name.

I would ask at reception what the local policy is. If they want absolute uniformity, they may not let you wear them during training, but will likely let you put them on for graduation. Just make sure you have a copy of your old DD214 to prove that you're entitled to wear them. Last thing you want is folks blasting you as a PX Ranger.

It’s just silly that you have to go through boot camp again. I was thinking of getting back in the Guard. I have 8 years active duty Marine Corps and six in the Nat. Guard. I have Gulf War I, Somalia and most recently Iraq under my belt. Going back to boot camp would be too degrading IMO.

Did the same in 1971 had 5 years AF; had to wear greens had my little bits and SP 4 stripes.
The other guy had his combat ribbons from Vietnam; and when the 2Lt asked him where he got those ribbons the man just looked him in the eye and said at the PX, and he would show the Lt just where.

Then the 1SG came by and told him to stop jerking the Lt around; but we were having so much fun!

I have done this dance, after a 7 year break in service to go to OCS in 2001. My wife was a DS at Fort Jackson at the time. In theory, you are authorized to wear all awards and badges that you were awarded or earned during your prior service. I was a SPC, since I had a Bachelor's degree. Only fools pinned on rank or badges. I was in a platoon with a guy who had a Ranger Tab, Airborne and Air Assault Badges that no one knew of until graduation day; we graduated OCS together. Trust me, there is NO upside to wearing any of it at basic training.

Personally, I would rather fly under the radar and not draw attention to myself. That's me personally. You earned them so if you choose to wear them, nothing wrong with that. As has been said in other comments, just be ready for added responsibility or possible harsher treatment, for various possible reasons. When I was in Basic/AIT at Knox in the 80s, there was an old vet that came back in and he got nothing but respect from Drill Sgts. and the rest of us. He had a chest full of ribbons and was Ranger, Special Forces etc.

I say wear them proudly. You earned them. When I was in OSUT, we had a prior service guy who had earned his EIB. He didn’t wear it at first but, when the Drill Sergeants found out he was authorized, they convinced him to put it on. I think they actually slacked up on him after that.

It will also show the new Soldiers to the Army that there is someone they can lean on for advice and support as they navigate their new life in the Army....I assume you want to be an NCO one day, so start early with helping to mold these young recruits with a positive impression; letting them know they made the right choice in an Army Career. It's always the first impressions that set the tone for whether or not a Soldier will stay beyond their first team of enlistment....you will be one of their first impressions, make it a good one! And tell them why you decided to return to the Army after getting out, it will give them something to think about when their re-enlistment time comes!

My two cents*: If you've earned it, if you have orders for it, wear it. But, don't make a big deal of it. Let others notice it, or not. Answer questions truthfully, honestly, but not boastfully. Let them come to you. Otherwise, it's on your uniform for the sake of completeness. You would feel "out of uniform" without it.

You got it because you are a good soldier, and you know how to be a good soldier. So be a good soldier, and make that your attitude.

If you earned those badges then wear them proudly. Last thing you would want is for your DS(s) to find out when they look at your pink and greens in the wall locker and realize you've been sandbagging. That's what happened to us at WOCS. No one wore their badges until the TAC officers realized we had a green beret in our formation that was trying to blend in. Then we all put our stuff on and that pride of those schools we all graduated in kicked in. Just my thoughts.

Be proud of your badges but resist the temptation to wear them during Basic, unless you want every leg drill sergeant to make it their mission to smoke you at every opportunity. If you’re looking to stand out and take a leadership role in basic, then wear them. Put them on your uniform for graduation.

I could be wrong but you may want to look further into the regulations. I believe you can wear the air assault badge but think you need to be assigned to an airborne unit in order to wear the airborne badge. I believe you need a certain number of jumps a month in order to stay certified as airborne also.

From a person who was in the Navy, they didn't allow personnel with other service badges to wear them in boot camp/recruit training....until graduation. I would "think" it's the same in Army "boot camp".....and either way, I'd keep a low profile and lead by example. Just a thought.

The short answer is “Yes.” You earned them, you may wear them. Being prior service, I’d carry a copy of your last ERB and/or a copy of the orders as your new one won’t automatically have them in there, and this would help avoid questions. And as I’ve seen others comment, I’d recommend wearing them. Take the opportunity to answer questions of the new privates who haven’t seen them before or are otherwise unwilling to ask the Drill Sergeants about them.

The idea of keeping a low profile isn’t gonna happen because you’re going as a SPC. They’ll automatically know you either have a college degree and are going OCS after basic, or you’re prior service. So wear them.

Chances given the training schedule having to chance to get them on will be hard until you get your dress uniform fitting ( I had a Basic Training Company). Your Drill Sgts will figure your history out soon enough via the training NCO (most likely). Not everyone wears their skill badges all the time. Concentrate on not getting getting I don't deserve this crap attitude and you'll stuff will shine at Graduation.

I would say wear them. You'll already stand out as an e-4, especially if youre going with stripes rather than a shamshield. Wear them and any other authorized patches proud, be the leader you want to become as an e-5, and teach the new guys tips and tricks to be a high speed, low drag soldier. Best of luck.

If in fact you are an Airborne and Air Assault graduate then you can and should wear all assigned awards and decorations based on the uniform you are wearing. If anyone else tells you otherwise then they are full of shit.

I am a Master rated Jumpmaster, Air Assault, and Rappel Master retired from the Army after 22 years of service. You have an obligation to proudly wear all awards and decorations “You” earned while on active duty. The last time I checked the only thing the military can take from you is your rank. All awards and decorations are permanent. Don’t be afraid to wear them and be prepared for leadership assignments such as Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, etc based on your experience. Plus your awards and decorations show you have the potential to lead from the front.

Leaders are selected and promoted based on potential. You have already shown that you have great potential. Always lead from the front!

As long as you earn your certifications, there is no problem. But, being a E4 drill staff will expect more leadership from you to the new recruits that at developing to be a soldier. Have in there and everything will pay off towards the end of your career.

A tricky question. ..which you should have talked about with the recruiter. In any case early on after your arrival for basic - talk to your company commander. I am certain there could be a positive way to deal with your situation. Meanwhile you are a basic trainee. When you graduate and arrive at your new unit pin those badges on. Ask your DI when you get to your unit. He/She may not want you to wear them so that your fellow soldiers don't look at you every time they give instructions. Remember the others are new recruits and the DIs may want them to go to them when a recruit has a question and not you.
But I would be shocked if the DI's didn't make you a recruit platoon leader.

I say wear them. There was a prior service VN vet in my basic training platoon. We called him grandpa and he took the kidding well. When we went to take photos in Class A's, he had his own set with all the medals and awards from his prior service. The DS really gave him hell for that. Up until that time he had just said he was prior service and had forgotten everything from when he was in before.

Maybe you can wear them to graduation. The last thing you want to do is try to show up an insecure Drill Sergeant that may not have those badges. In my basic and AIT they allowed prior service folks with combat patches, badges, and ribbons to wear them to graduation on their Class As. As far as on the camo uniform in training, not a good idea. Don't be a Mr Know It All, reaffirm the Drill Sergeants and your time will go much smoother as a prior service.

I wore my EIB when I reenlisted. However some higher ranking soldiers challenged me until I got to the 25th ID in Viet Nam. It was harder to get than the CIB.

No, I wasn’t Army. I started out in the Marine Corps. I earned my Aircrew Wings of Gold. I got out, probably wasn’t my best decision. Hated being a sillyvilian. As the Marines weren’t accepting prior service, I went with the Air Force. No basic training, no tech school, just report for duty at Hill AFB. I’d earned my Wings. The AF said I couldn’t wear them. That only lasted a short time then I said fueck it, I’m wearing them. Never got called on, never got told to remove them.
Wear what you earned. They don’t just hand out these devices. If someone gets a hard one over it, take your hits and move on.

I wouldn't wear them. I had them as a cadet and later a junior officer, having earned them as an enlisted soldier. While they gave me credibility, they also drew a lot of attention to me. Some of it was cool in the beginning. It was nice being respected for what I already knew (I was one of the original NCO Cadre that stood up the 10th Mountain in the early 90's). But that turned into a sore point when less knowledgeable upperclassmen cadets wanted to flex their muscle by trying to trip me up. While they never did, it got old very quickly.

Look, be proud of having those badges and the experience. But keep your head low and just help out your peers. You will get more done for your fellow soldiers if you don't have to worry about getting harassed or worrying about maintaining a higher standard. Put all of that back on right as you get ready to go to graduation ceremonies and kick ass at your next assignment.

This is an opinion only. If Regulation allows you to wear them, wear them, you earned them, you are qualified for them, be a leader among your peers, set the example of what a soldier should look and act like. Your not replacing a Drill Sergeant by any means, but you can still conduct yourself to the professional standard in which you were trained. However if you are wanting to have them to act all jacked up and shove superiority over your peers then you might just wanna think your motivation to start with. I promise you if regs allow you to wear them you will certainly stand out, but again take the recognition to encourage others to be the best they can be.

I'll give You credit, I left after 8 years service and went back in a the same rank of SSgt, but lost the Four Years time in grade due to the length of time. To be promoted to the next rank took two years time in grade so over the next 14 years was promoted to TSgt, MSgt and SMSgt a grade I held for 5 years. If I had to go back to basic I would not have gone back in not that I couldn't handle it but don't feel that would have been reasonable. Even before entering the Air Force I had been a full time cadet at a Military Academy in an Army ROTC program. I did however keep a low profile in basic but din't have the prior actual active duty service You did. I don't see any problem with You wearing those decorations, You earned them. You very well may have earned decorations the staff there isn't even entitled to and You sure aren't new to the Army. I fail to see why they would even consider making You go back to basic training though with Your Military background. In My own view I don't have a very high opinion of them making You do that !

Unless ordered, you are not required to wear anything beyond name tapes, rank and unit patches. So, keep your badges and medals in your locker, ready for inspection. When they hold your first Class A inspection, wear everything you are authorized to wear and ensure they are documented on your DD214. Returning as an E-4 will be the first tip-off. If you have a Combat patch, that will be the second indicator. By the time you get to your Class A inspection, the cat will be out of the bag.

Although you may believe Basic will be easier, you are an E-4 and will be expected to serve as a Squad Leader, mentor others and assist in any way you can. All of this is good news because when you get your assignment, you may have a Basic training record, indicating service as a Sqd Ldr, ready for E-5. Good luck

My basic had to returning soldiers, in different platoons. One got into trouble for not having rank/badges on uniform, the other talked to cadre and opted only to have rank(lost a rank from E-4 to E-3) stitched to uniform. At graduation, his dress showed badges earned and awards. Some cadre take offense to badges they have not earned, others do not. Better to ask first, at platoon level, and possibly confirm with 1SG out of respect. Either way, those around you will quickly realize you know and understand the program faster than they do, and start asking questions and looking to you for help and guidance.

Okay, you asking one thing and then saying something else in your follow-up comment. First you ask about wearing your qualification badges and then comment about wearing patches.

I believe there is Reg. that may restrict you from wearing the qualification badges.
Those badges are qualification badges in the same manner as your marksmanship and other badges. As such, if you have not re-qualified, which I believe for Airborne is 5 jumps every year, you should probably avoid wearing them. At least until you can get it details on this question sorted out.
Now, if you are talking about "patches", as in unit patches (i.e., combat patch you have while being assigned to an airborne or air assault unit) then by all means, wear it proudly.
If you served in combat with multiple such units, I believe there are Regs. for which one you are allowed to wear. I think is is the last unit you were deployed with, again get it sorted out before you go off half-cocked and get your ass in some hot water or worse, make a fool of yourself.

When I enlisted in the Army in '71, with PS as a Navy/Marine Vet, Vietnam was still going on. Myself and another PS (Army 1st Inf Div) were both Nam Vets. Literally, the Drill Sgt's decided they didn't want "old salts" in BCT. I assume that was because DS' were short staffed and they often used recent graduates as "Acting SGT's" while they were awaiting orders, or AIT start dates.
The actually sent us home with instructions to call our DS every Sunday. I think I was there four times after the day we got assigned to a BCT Company. That was for things like "Night Fire & morning rifle qualification, PT Test and Puggle Stick, Hand Grenade throw and Graduation.
At Graduation, the Co Cdr order the two of us, AND his XO to sit in the stands because we all had combat ribbons/badges while he only had the Nat'l Defense ribbon. The XO was a 1LT with multiple Silver Stars, Purple Hearts, etc with about 5 full rows. He was a Mustang and was part of the Army's RIF, despite his years of experience.
Anyhow, you should consult with your Drill Sergeant before just showing up in formation with all your AB and AA badges. Being an E4 will already subject you to scrutiny and likely land you in the senior Recruit Leadership position if you're the only PS in the Company. Some DS will not like the idea of you wearing badges; others may PREFER that you do and will likely point you out as a positive example to the FNG's.

When I was in Army basic in 1984, we had a soldier that had been in Vietnam. He waited until graduation day when we were all in our greens to show all of his awards. He was more decorated than any of our drill sergeants. I would recommend you wait until your graduation. You will gain the respect of the other trainees and your drill sergeants.

I was also in after a couple of months after my discharge the job market was so bad I reenlisted. I was sworn in a MEPS in my class A uniform. Made a big impact on the new recruits.

I would wear them, but be ready to remove them. They will show up on your paperwork, and are part of your uniform. However, your new command may not want you to wear them on your BDUs. I don't expect there would be an issue with them on your Class A though.

As a Drill Sargeant for 4 years in BCT and as a 1SG in a BCT unit I would suggest you wear them proudly. On the flipside as a Drill Sargeant and a BCT 1SG and found out you were not showing your pride because you were not wanting to be a leader and not wearing your credentials of expertise duly earned you would think someone started up a weedeater and dropped it in your drawers. I went to basic training June '79 we had three Vietnam vets in our company two where in my platoon. All three stood out for one they were in their early 30's and they shined in formation. They all made squad leader and one of the squad leaders was in Vietnam with our senior D.I. both were in the 101s't in '68 together. What I saw they were given a lot of slack and as far as I am concerned they earned it. All three were combat infantry all three had their wings and CIB's basic training was just filling in the box for them.

If your instructors are doing their jobs correctly they will already know about your prior service. If they single you out because of that service then, with their permission, go ahead and wear the patches you have earned. Be advised that a lot more will be expected of you because of your prior service so be ready to do all you can to be a mentor to your fellow soldiers.

I went to basic with a prior service Vietnam combat veteran back in 89. During the normal process of basic training, the drills left the dude out of all of the basic training BS. Everyone else was getting smoked for the sun shinning, dude was left alone. We ended up with drill cadets from WestPoint that didnt get the memo, dude took it in stride. The Senior Drill found out that the DCs were harassing dude, it ended poorly for the DCs.
The Army folks even let him do his day job at night, he was the LA county coroner, and was being brought back in from a civilian acquired skills program, he was coming back in the Guard or Reserves as a Coroner. We got to see all kinds of cool photos for him to sign off on.

During basic dude was an E-4, on graduation day. Dude was wearing E-6, combat patch, a fruit salad, with a lot of oak leaf clusters.

Well, I'm curious SPC Chev C., how did it turn out ? I see the original post of yours was now 8 months ago, so something happened by now. My closest experience was going to OCS in '67 with a handful of guys up to the rank of E6. No combat vets, but one guy was a SP4 from the 82nd Airborne, and obviously jump qualified. No one could wear any of there prior service stuff. Even though we were paid as SP5s or SGT E5 (like me) we were all "slick sleeves" again. Fatigue, tan or dress uniforms. We had distinct OCS insignia for our collars and hats/helmets, and "Forge the Thunderbolt" unit insignia for our epaulets. The only guy with extensive prior service that graduated with me was the one from 82nd. As others have mentioned, he got to wear all his awards at graduation, and looked sharp !

Wear a 'sterile' uniform along with the rest of the Trainees so you don't stand out amongst them, and will blend in. Don't tell them your past. I'd wait till graduation to put on all the accessories that you've earned. The Cadre will most likely already know your history by your records. Lead by example, and assist your squad members as much as you can as a potential junior NCO. You may be leading some of them soon following Basic.

That is a funny question. I was drafted and served as a combat medic with the 1/501st 101st Airborne in Vietnam. After I got discharged, I kept having this dream where I get drafted again and go back to basic training. Its a nightmare for me thinking I stuck with 2 more years. All the cruits in basic see I wearing the 101st on my left shoulder,, where the Eagle is looking back at her combat experience. They all laugh that I got another 2 years, get shipped right back to Nam, get put in this maze where everyone is shooting at me with AK47’s until I finally make it out, and wake up to live another day. Had that dream thousands of times for decades.

One time I speak to a head counselor and tell her that dream. She laughed and said it was a copping dream that a lot of vets have. Not sure why,, but knowing others shared my CRAZY dream actually felt better. Haven’t had that dream in awhile but if I went back to basic at this point in my life, I am sure that the cruits would all have a bigger laugh for a different reason.

There is some speculation in the responses, but I'll refer you to AR670-1, section 22-2 for the official answer and let you determine where to go from there. A commander may require you to wear awards at certain times; otherwise, it is optional and up to the wearer. You'll note there is no provision where they can tell you to NOT wear an award that you've earned (other than in section 22-3 which does not apply). My initial thoughts were wear them. Then I thought about how I was treated by the first shirt back in the states and to think he had a draftee as a Sgt. running a platoon of aggressors helping to train Rangers. He rode me hard for 6 months, good thing the CO was on my side. I had 4 strikes against me, I was a draftee, a Sgt., had a CIB and I guess the topper was, I was a Northerner. Make it easy on yourself and your rank will tell enough, the drills will know also without advertising it. JMHO

You earned them, wear them with pride. I joined the Army in 1973. One of the platoon guides in my company was a Vietnam Vet with more ribbons than many of our drill sergeants. Only know up front, just from the mere fact you are going back in as a specialist, prior service to boot, more will be expected of you. You will not be able to hide out in the crowd. Advance the calendar to last year, my nephew, a collage graduate, attended basic training as a specialist. He was selected early to be a platoon guide, which put a lot of pressure on his shoulders. So go mentally prepared, you already know the drill. Good luck, thank you for your service and your commitment. I hope everything works out the way you want it to this time around.

My Station Commander at my recruiting Station told me more than twenty years ago that back in the 80’s he left the active duty Marine as an E4 and joined the Army Reserve and worked through the rank and became an E6 with a qualified Drills Sergeant batch. Then he decided to join Army Active duty, the Army dropped his ranks from SSG to PFC. Back in the late 80’s, the Army doesn’t need too many soldiers. In fact, the Army even paid incentive to Soldiers to get out being Active duty or Reserve. My Station Commander almost walked out of the MEPS, but due to his circumstances back then he decided to kept his pride and accepted the offer as a PFC with the new MOS that required him to attend AIT. At AIT, all his chain of command know that he was a Private with a qualified Drills Sergeant batch excepted the Post CSM. One day, at DFAC (back then we called mess halls), Post CSM saw him as a PFC with DS batch and a student at AIT. He was stopped and asked about why he worn the DS batch, but before he gave the answered his 1SG came and gave the answers to CSM. And from then on, CSM gave him a new name as Private First Class Drills Sergeant!
For you now, since you’re qualified and earned the right to wear those batches, you should wear them proudly because no one can take away from you since it’s in your military records.

I would only wear them if they were sewn on. This will eliminate the drill sergeants eating your lunch if one of them is pinned on out of regs. Plus time management should be an issue, but I haven't been to basic in over 20 years so things have changed. Finally you need to take something that proves you have earned these badges. If the drill asks for proof and you can't produce it, then it is like you never earned them.

While you are authorized to wear anything you received on Active duty, I would not wear the combat patch and badges until the end of the course at graduation. It will make you stand out and likely make you a target of the drill sergeants.

Homework time write down all pros and cons and then make your decision. Could go either way for you depending on how high speed you are in basic. So you seriously have to look at yourself and determine how is your performance gonna be.

Move in secret until your intentions need to be revealed. Wear them at the end, so others will look at you and go "oh wow". Wearing them early will just bring unneeded attention in basic. I'm assuming you have no lessons needed to be learned in basic, so I would fly under the radar until close to graduation. This is not a time to brag, just my two cents.

There really isn't a "should" or "shouldn't" here, just regulation, command policy, and personal choice.

Army regulations authorize qualified personnel to wear both of these skill badges on the duty uniform. This is Army wide and for all Soldiers unless countermanded, by exception, through command directive. There are some units that are command-directed to wear badges differently than proscribed in the regulation and there are some schools that modify the uniform while assigned- Ranger School comes to mind. These modifications start at higher levels of command and are not decided by Drill Sergeants, as they are bound by the same regulations you are and require deliberate command override to institute. All this to say that you are authorized to wear all awards and badges earned in your previous enlistment (on the proper uniform) until a countermanding command policy is made explicit to you. If that occurs, just be professional about it and there will be no foul.

Now, when considering what you will choose to do, remember that these badges represent successful completion of two schools that required you to be bold. I say run with that trend and accept the leadership responsibilities that your Drill Sergeants will look for you to carry. You will probably be an NCO soon, so I recommend using every opportunity to learn to lead since the mistakes you make while achieving will be worth more to you than all of your mediocre successes. Besides, your Drill Sergeants will already know that you were prior service, so you won't be hiding anything. While you may choose to, or not to, wear your skill badges, I would hope that you can see that you really don't have a choice if you accept your role as a future leader. Plus, as it is often said, "fortune favors the bold", so be bold and face the heat.

I would definitely for graduation. Not sure how much it matters one way or the other going through basic again. I presume everyone would be able to tell quickly that this isn't your first rodeo.
Should really have that talk with your recruiter about having to go through basic again and not just going straight to a Re-Class AIT (I'm surprised its a requirement if it's only been a few years).
But wear what you've earned.

Since the original post is a year old we’re probably past this point, however for others in the same dilemma there is value in not wearing previously earned badges. When I went through basic (summer/fall of 2000) trainees didn’t even where rank, which included E1-E4. The reason being that every trainee is on a level playing field. It takes everyone being in the same level to have those common experiences in basic that are designed to break people down then build them back up. If you go into it with the mentality that you’re already better than the new recruits, you will be doing a disservice to the break down/build up process. Go into basic with some humility and be ready to help your newly reported platoon members assimilate to Army life.

Consult AR 670-1 and ask your drill sergeants. I joined the Army in '97 almost 8 years after being honorably discharged from the Marine Corps. After doing the research I just suggested, the only time I was authorized to wear them was for inspections and graduation. There are cut off points for some awards, etc even within the same military branch. Generally speaking, you should be fine...but CYA(cover your @$$). You don't want to be "that soldier" who gets made an example of because you should know. Especially as a junior NCO.

My position is you earned those it is recorded on your DD214 so wear them proudly. Might influence one of the one trainees to go Airborne or Air Assault. Make them a better soldier in the end.

Keep a low profile! Wearing such awards maybe an intimidations to others and on the other hand may give privileges over others that others may look down on you. We all go into basic with nothing and leave basic with earned accomplishments. After basic and reporting to your command you can done your awards as long as you have documents/paper work to back them up. Don't talk or brag on your past military experience. Your a equal to others and others are equal to you.

If I were you, I would wear my badges, along with all awards and decorations. It would serve two purposes. First the Drill Sergeants will know you had the requisite discipline to complete those two schools. Secondly, it give your classmates something to aim for in their individual careers. You will jave instant credibility with the young recruits and would be able to diffuse negative situations. Welcome back to Active Duty, and good luck!

I served in the US Army twice. from 84 to 87 Then had a 20-year break in service and went back in 2007. They did not make me go back through Basic Training. Instead, they sent me to what they call WTC (Warrior transition Course) at Ft Sill and White Sands Missile Range that lasted 30 days. Basically, it was a shortened version Basic training where you do everything in 4 weeks that you would normally do in 13 weeks or however long basic is these days.
It was designed for Prior Service Army or military from other branches of service transitioning into the Army. They put me back in as an E-2 and fast tracked my rank back to E-5 after finishing WTC and AIT. The Military is constantly changing so perhaps they don't have the WTC path for prior service anymore.
Anyway, in the WTC course you were authorized to wear your patches or anything else you earned, But the situation was different than going to BCT and being put in with a bunch of new recruits. I would probably try to avoid any extra attention in that scenario.

Probably won't be allowed to wear them. I went back through basic prior service a few years ago with another prior service guy that had all sorts of uniform decor. He wasn't allowed to wear any of it until graduation. Going back through as an E4 will put you in the same lot as all the other basic trainees. There was a prior service Navy E4 in my platoon. He was treated just like the non prior service troops

As you should know from your prior service, if anything can go wrong, or be misconstrued, be misunderstood or basically turn into a cluster fu$$,,, it will. You might made some enlightened D.I.s or you might have jealous window lickers. Just cruise through boot, put on your credentials upon graduation and move on.

When I went to Basic in 1984 we had a Vietnam vet go through with us. It was a bit awkward when we had a Class A inspection and he had a way bigger fruit salad than our DI's. The DI's definitely treated him with more respect after that. He had a Silver star with "V" and two Bronze stars, with a "V".

My trip to Basic was in 1983, we had the one guy with us who had been drafted, gone to Vietnam and gotten out. Much later (obviously) he volunteered. He wore what he had earned and not a soul said anything about it because, like your case, he EARNED them.

I would wear my blood jump wings, 101 Screaming Eagle patch (left shoulder looking back at combat) and tell them to relax they should read “The Odyssey of Echo Company”.

The Echo is E company 501st, 101st Airborne. I was in Charlie company. We went on December 13, 1967 and after a couple of months it was a regular blood bath described pretty good in that book. If they read that book before enlisting, they probably would have second thoughts. In basic, it’ll have them facing a reality of what was and what could be.

My nightmares after discharge was that I could get pulled back in for another 2 years and go through basic and the guys would winder why I had those patches and other things all over my fatigues. Now it just me running through a maze in Nam with AK47 tracer rounds being shot around me. VA sent me for a little therapy, so to speak, and the shrink said she had heard both those dreams from many others. I am not sure why, but knowing that made me feel a little less crazy, so to speak.

So this can play out a few ways. First congrats on going back in. Second, this should be almost a cake walk for you. Remember to play the game and you'll fine. Third hmmmm you may be precieved has having special treatment while in basic but again your really there as a refresher. On the other hand drill SGTs may ride you until the cows come home and do it again until they leave. Meaning that they may want you to step up more than ever and will make a public display when you mess up. Let's face it there will be a time when you mess up. Personally, I would wear them on my class A uniform. Now I've been out for a little while so I believe that its called dress blues now. With that being said I do not know the regs for wearing those in a non stationed unit or if you can wear them in a tdy/training environment. Now you know drill sgts have spent countless hours on AR-600 on properly wearing the uniform so what I would do make about 4-5 copies of your actual award for those and keep them with you in your pocket or some where you can easily get to them and keep them dry. Again drill Sgts will damn sure expect you to out preform other Soldiers on the PT fitness test and other areas. If you feel you can back up your stuff then by all means wear them. Just remember wearing those in that environment will draw a lot of questions. Be cautious and be ready and good luck. Let us know on here how it goes. Be safe.

I'd go low-pro. Drill instructors will expect you to lead by example and know what they expect. Most importantly is uniformity and listening to superiors. You're going to be in a position of leadership, and if you slip in the slightest they will make your life a living hell. They will see those patches as a challenge to the cadré. That's my opinion.

As a former Drill Sergeant and having had prior service going through BCT, we made sure they didn’t wear their devices not because none of us had them but because to retract from bringing attention to them. However, we encourage them to wear their devices and medals proudly upon graduation. Besides, ALL prior service soldiers were Cadres helpers. Because we felt they paid their way already.

When I was at Reception Battalion at Fort Sill back in 1996, there was a specialist about to start basic training that was wearing a drill sergeant badge because he had been a Reserve E-5 drill sergeant and when he went active duty, he got demoted because he didn't have enough time in rank to keep it when he went active. The first drill that saw him wearing that lost his mind and asked him why he was wearing it, the guy explained what happened and the drill sergeant said nothing more after that than, "Man, that sucks, Specialist." All the drill sergeants at Reception left him alone after that.

If the Army thought you were good enough to wear those badges at this point, they wouldn't have made you go back to preschool like Billy Madison.

Now think back to your Preschool days? What is the advice for every future service member be it Soldier, Marine or Coastie? KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN AND DO NOT BRING ATTENTION TO YOURSELF.

Remeber how they found out one kid was a track star? The got smoked by running laps around the formation, some kid was in a band they got to sing cadence in the classroom and suddenly for every movement for a few days...
God forbid Air Assault forgot how to tie a swiss seat, flub a line of the soldier's creed or at your advanced age miss a step on your rucks.... just be the quiet slick sleeved old man and learn the fundamentals like everyone else is there to do.

You can show out with your full stack at graduation and AIT

The comments indicate that the qualifications should be wore. My experience was that we wore no rank or qualifications in Ranger training. We had a Vietnam veteran captain training with us, we all knew who his was and followed his lead. He just stood out from us newbees.

I went through Marine Corps boot camp with an Army Ranger sergeant E 5, who had a tour in VN already. The Marine Corps policy was not to identify those individuals with prior service, so they would not have special treatment (good or bad) either intentionally or otherwise. I believe that non-identity is appropriate for basic....He showed up at graduation with ribbons, badges and sergeant stripes. I think he was proud to do it that way, as well

Like the LTC earlier stated wear them, you earned them, but be aware that it will draw attention from the Drill Sargents. If you enlisted again as a SPC you will have to wear the rank so you will draw their attention anyway.

The better question is why the Army is requiring BCT in your situation. I know the answer, but the answer is pretty stupid to be perfectly honest.

I was a BCT company commander. There's no specific reason not to wear them. The general reason is that since you will be getting newly issued uniforms there may be a question of time to get them on. Do bring you 214 so when you get to you class A fitting they can order the ribbons and badges . Depending on the Drills you may catch some extra attention to check your attitude out and if you pass that they'll likely use you in leadership positions or as a Training aid when you hit the classes. So buckle down this is the second time through and remember everyone else has to learn it from scratch so what seems easy to you will be hard to them.

Assuming they're yours because you graduated from the respective schools and not because you bought them, then yes you can wear them. Should you? If you can withstand the extra attention this will bring, absolutely. You've done something not everyone can do, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with making everyone else aware that they are dirty, nasty legs.

I echo the sentiments of others in that you should wear them proudly. BUT, be prepared for extra attention. When it comes from the new Soldiers, embrace it. The things they experience early on in their careers can have a lasting impression. Let them know that they can achieve these things as well if they are physically fit and if they are selected by their leadership to do so. Not everyone has the opportunity to earn them, so they need to excel in order to get the chance. Don't BS them. Be truthful about the experience. Anything to manage realistic expectations so that they don't leave basic/AIT with the wrong idea about what their future careers may hold.

It used to be if you went to Basic as an E3/E4 you could not ware that rank while in basic yu ware no rank and were paid as an E1 but put the rank back on the last day of training and started being paid at that rank as of that day (but this was in the 70's) While an XO of a basic training Company in the mid 70's we had several retreads go through and we required them to ware skill insignia (airborne, ect) , awards and combat badges/patches. Of course they were also put in leadership positions

You are authorized to wear any patch or badge you earned through training and deployments. You will stand out anyways whether you wear them or not since they’ll know you’re prior service or at least should know. They may challenge you more or they may leave you alone. Possibly expect you to assist them with the new recruits. Just make sure everything you wear is backed by documents in iPERMS or IPPS-A, whichever program you used before leaving service the first time.

When I reclassed as a MP in 2004, we had soldiers who wore their badges and combat patches. Even if you are an insert vs reclass (reclass comprises of PS soldiers); then wear what you earned.

IMHO, depends on how much "flak" you can tolerate. Some Drill Sergeants may see them and single you out for additional training in Methodology of Push-ups. Others may cut you some slack. The fellow trainees will / may constantly question you on Jump School / Air Assault School. So...it's up to you. But you need PROOF you have earned the patches, such as your DD-214; may want to carry a copy in your wallet. Funny Story: In basic training a million years ago, we had an afternoon "off." Next morning we had a 0800 formation, in the old Khaki uniforms. A Drill Sergeant walked up and down the ranks, and saw one yahoo with small holes in his uniform, above the left pocket. He told the yahoo to empty his pockets; out came a CIB and a pair of jump wings. A REAL PX commando was discovered; yahoo had never earned the badges. True Story.

I was Airborne from NROTC prior to Army basic. I waited until we finished the basic training portion (about 6 weeks) then I proudly wore my wings henceforth. One senior drill, who was a master parachutist, questioned me about my wings and I promptly recited my class #. I'm sure he verified that with the Infantry school at Ft. Benning as he never inquired again. I was a squad leader by about week 2 or 3 anyway, and my marine cadence gave me away too. I was singled out for pushups routinely as my senior drill respected me and my leadership as I led by example. Yes, my fellow recruits had questions about jump school, so it was a learning experience for them too.

For those going back to basic training I only recommend this... if you earned them you have every right to proudly display them on your uniform. But you better make sure they are positioned EXACTLY where AR670-1 states they should be placed because you can bet you ass that every DS will be not only questioning your qualification but be there with a machinists ruler to measure their placement. My recommendation would be prior to being all "loud and proud" about it talk with your platoon DS about it. If there is literally anyone you need on your side to defend you against the other platoon DS's and/or at least run interference on your behalf it will definitely be them. While you are there you are not only representing your achievements but you will be representing your platoon in all aspects because it's not just training most times it is a competition between each platoon. When in doubt, ask. Lead with Courage. Deeds Not Words!

Specialist, back in the 60s you could not wear any previously earned qual badges while in BCT/AIT. The reason is that all Boots are equal during training. After graduation you could then assume wearing your earned qual badges. However, that is not the case now. You earn it you wear it. You're a walking billboard for particular programs such as Rangers, SEAL, Divers, etc. Check with your command when you report for duty.

First, welcome back, trooper! Second, while you most certainly should be allowed to wear them upon graduation and during ASU/Pinks inspections, the day-to-day uniform is meant to be sanitized (No Combat patches, Ranger, SF tabs, (This was also the standard at OCS)) However, you might want to ask your recruiter prior to shipping out. Should you choose to wear them, you will certainly be the center of much-unwanted attention from the Drill Sargeants... You know the game, be smart about it, and let the ego take a back seat! Going back to basic training as an E4? I didn't realize that was a thing, but I only speak chair force language.

Definitely wear them. You earned them. If others are jealous and give you grief, that is on them.

While not as cool as your badges, I wore my Navigator wings at Pilot training. Current aeronautical badges are mandatory in the Air Force but I would have if I had the choice anyway. After pilot training when they became optional I still wore them. Got some crap for it (double wings is allowed but used to be a cultural no-no). Spent 18 months of flight training to earn them and nearly 7 years in that job. No reason to hide that achievement and no reason to hide yours.

Just stay humble about it and you'll be fine. Good luck!

My 2 cents...don't wear them until graduation day. Then don all of Awadrs/decorations and CSI you have earned. You dont need to put on a show you are there to train. Dont hesitate to be a leader that the younger Soldiers can look up to but dont get in too deep unless the Cadre pin that rose on you.

Absolutely wear them. I went through basic with a guy who had been an E-7 in Nam and he wore his jump wings and CIB. We had much respect as trainees for him. You might draw some heat from the drills at first but not as much as you would if they find out you’re not wearing badges you earned. I don’t know about you but I worked my balls off for my wings. Not familiar with Army Regs; will you be out of uniform if you don't wear them? If so, the answer is obvious. If the choice is yours, I would probably lean towards wearing them, but humbly. The cadre may expect more from you for it, but I would hope they wouldn't single you out for worse treatment. If you consider the purpose of BT it wouldn't make sense for them to as you've 'been there, done that'.
I went through BT with a former E5. He was a few years older than the rest of us and, obviously, experienced in Navy ways. The instructors didn't exactly baby him- he knew it if he screwed up, just like anyone else- but they did somewhat rely on him to help guide us from within. He was treated maybe a bit better than us, but I think that was probably because he had been through it before and was better at it than us.

If you are joining the Marine Corps you may not. As far as I know, he rules have not changed. All recruits during recruit training are the rank of private and can wear no rank or other insignia. I went through boot camp with a two tour Vietnam Ranger Sergeant. He was slick-sleeve all the way to graduation. Then he wore ribbons and badges and E5 stripes. (No place for the ranger tab on USMC uniform) None of us knew it until grad day

When we graduated, they proudly wore all awards and insignia on their class A uniform. When I went back in I had to goe to basic. As a Nam Vet, I wore nothing except rank until graduation. However, back then ('71) Nam was still going on and the DS' really didn't want any Prior Service guys around the newbies.
Myself and another Nam Vet were literally allowed (sent, actuallY) to go home & we had to call the DS each Sunday evening. He would tell us then when, where and what time to be back. Only had to go back for weapon & grenade qualifications; PT Test and pugel stick, night fire and graduation.
On graduation day, both of us, AND the Company XO (a highly decorated Mustang 1LT) were told to sit in the stands. Why? The CO was a ROTC guy with only the National Defense SM and didn't want us in formation with him. LOL Sadly, the 1LT with all his experience and 2 Silver Stars, 3 PH's, Bronze Stars w/V devices, etc was being booted out with the RIF (Reduction in Force) while the rookie CPT stayed. SEEMED odd, but the Army does odd things at times but I'm guessing they had their reasons - probably education.
In your case, I'd speak to your DS and find out what their preference is. It might not matter one way or the other, but the DS' will already know your status. Be prepared to fill a recruit leadership role depending, again, on their preferences today. Of course, you are "entitled" to wear them, but in Basic, your rank will already let the recruits know you're Prior Service so except for "bragging rights," it really won't matter. Regardless of the unit's prefernces, I'd definietely wear everything at least twice - official photo and graduation.

You have leadership already bred into you don't be concerned with how the Drills are going to treat you, this is your second rodeo.
I remember when I got out and came back in, I stood out as well but because of the fact I already had leadership experience the Drills didn't smoke me, they treated me with the respect because I had already earned my Blue Cord.

I did basic training at Benning back in 1980 and had a few prior service veterans in my unit. 2 were Vietnam vets with combat infantry badges. The Cadre, some who also had CIB's were respectful. The other trainees were curious. If you are authorized, wear them with pride

Are you planning on volunteering to be Dorm chief, Flight leader or any other high recognition position during basic training? If not, you probably are better off blending in that standing out. However I think the first thing you need to find out is whether you will be allowed to wear your rank. You may want to research that ahead of time and maybe even talk to a recruiter about it. If they say you can, or you already know you can, then I see no reason why you can't wear the Air Asault badge. I'd check into the Airborne badge though, as those are generally only worn when you are assigned to the MOS and I am not aware of any MODS slots in basic Training that are classified as Airborne. I know this is long after the fact but I'll answer anyway. When I went back in I had to go through basic again as well (changing branches of service). I had badges but they weren't allowed to be worn until graduation day, and the same applied to my rank. I wore my badges, awards and decorations but only because I had to. Personally, I disliked wearing them at all, but that is just me.

I was at Ft. Benning Infantry Basic/AIT in 1981. We had an "old" guy go through with us who was prior service. One day the Drills called him over and after a few seconds at Parade Rest, all three guys went very relaxed, and the "old" guy lit up a smoke. After talking for about 5 minutes he walked up to the bay he slept in and came down with all his blouses draped over his arm. and walked down "Drag Ass Hill" to the PX (this was Sand Hill) and we had only been there for a few days or so and no one was allowed anywhere near the PX. He came back an hour or so later with a bunch of stuff sewn on his blouses: a 173rd combat patch (right shoulder), a CIB, and Jump Wings with a little gold star in the center (yeah, he was on that jump). "Old" guy was a Vietnam Vet and yes, like the guy above said, we were like little sponges getting all kinds of good info from him. So yeah, I would wear what you have earned.

My advice is to wear them, tell those who ask how you got them and be proud. Lord knows, in this time were CRT and low morale is first rather than mission prepardness in our military, new recruits need to know the history and have a high initiative to achieve purpose and ratings.

You earned them.

I had a break in service as well. You are authorized to wear any awards or decorations you earned in previous service. If coming from another branch there may be some not allowed.

My bunk mate during that time had been a parachute rigger in the marines. During his time there he served in an ANGLICO unit and was on active jump status. He went to army jumpmaster school at Ft. Benning.

So when we in processed he could not wear his Marine gold wings, but due to his qualifications he was authorized Army master parachutist wings. Raised alot of eye brows with the drills at Ft. Sill.

I didn't wear them the first couple weeks with the USAF, and one day BAM, I pinned them on, and all I got was a nod, and an it was about time look. I think they had already reviewed my file, and knew all it along.

I would find out if you are authorized to wear them since you had a break in service. If you are authorized to wear them then wear them on your dress uniform for graduation. As long as you have documenation saying you can wear them that will definitely get the drill SGTs to have a little hissy fit. I would keep a low profile. Its been a few years and in my opinion if you wear them then there should be no excuse why you shouldnt get a 300 on your pt test.

I feel sorry for you that you feel the need or that you have to re-up under the current leadership. I would rather shovel poop in Louisiana for minimum wage. I would wait. I just finished watching General Milley testify before congress and his seems his balls have shivaled up under his ribbons. I loved my time in the Army, 76-85. It was a pround time to serve. The types of soldiers joining today that can't handle someone holloring in their face are not going to be able to handle combat. This may not be the place for me to go on a rant and I apologize. Today's military is not mine. I was proud of wht I earned and did. Not what was just given to me. God bless the U.S.A

Wear those badges with pride. It shows not only your fellow new recruits that you might be a person to lead and help mold them into great Soliders. It will also show them that if they have questions they can ask you and you can enlighten them on what they need to do to move up the ranks to become better Soliders and even NCOs if they wish to continue with the Service.

I wish you good luck and hope these young men and women in your BCT will become the best they can be without their heads up their fourth point of contact.

You have EARNED them for life. According to AR 670-1 you would be out of uniform to not wear what you have earned. Once you put that uniform back on they stay with you as part of that uniform. You could spend time overseas and earn a combat patch before you got out. You return to the Army and that combat patch immediately goes back on that uniform. Nothing gets erased. However, this definitely out of the norm, so don't be surprised if you receive a lot of questions. I went to basic with a guy who was returning and he had higher rank, no qualification badges, but had more ribbons on his class A's than the rest of us did. Just know that expectations in you will be higher. You may be chosen as a PG, APG, or an experienced soldier, who may assist the drill sergeants in training during certain events, or to be a demonstrator. I'm too old now, but if I were to go back in the Army my uniform would immediately have air assault wings and a 101st Airborne Division combat patch. My class A's would most likely have more ribbons than some of the drill sergeants themselves, since I have three rows, one of which would be my Arcom with an oak leaf. You have earned them, so they are part of your uniform, and you wear them proudly!

Same thing happened to me being prior service and redoing basic training after breaking service. I wore my previous awards on my class a uniform and had a DI tell me to remove them as it would make others seem under achievers(lol) thing was I had awards that as a DI he didn't have. I served during desert storm. SeniorDI said wear them with pride. I say you do the same, just don't get a big head

It's what's the drill says. Not what you want. I had a prior service in my bct class & they weren't allowed to wear anything extra on their uniforms. Now for graduation I would ask to be allowed to wear your upto date awards. I would think that be fine.

I remember that when I was brand new to the service and in OCS one guy in out training squadron was prior service. His advice was invaluable to a new guy with zero service knowledge.

Those badges represent excellence, so, if you wear them, be prepared to step up and represent because you will be under the microscope from all sides. Wow! I know I’m late to the party with this one but I’d like to leave this comment. This is coming from a Reserve Drill Sergeant Company Commander. The short answer is yes but with this caveat. Wear them if you plan to represent the professional soldier you are to your other Basic Trainees. If you do no one will bat an eye as it’s what expected. Besides, we are gonna know if you do or don’t, we’ve read your file. If you don’t represent the professional soldier you are, then it will look as an attempt to stand out and try to be a Prima Donna. Trust me, you will get a lot of personal attention you won’t like. Lastly, I’ll speak as the young E-3 I was in 1987 who went to Basic with two prior service E-4s at Ft. Benning. Both of them were the former and not the latter and all of us were better for it. We respected them both and they set a high standard in everything we did. Hope all went well and that’s my two cents.

when i was a drill sergeant, i had a prior service Air Force guy that was in the PJ pipeline but did not complete due to family issues near the end of training. he got out for a while and eventually joined the army in hopes of going into Special Forces. when he got to Basic Training, he already had: Airborne, SCUBA, and HALO completed. one of the other drill sergeants from the platoon told me about that, i had the guy show me his training certificates. he didnt have the badges with him, so the next sunday when we had some down time after religious services and such i took him and a battle buddy to clothing sales (and then off post to a TA-50 shop) to get the appropriate badges to wear while he was Basic. the CSM saw him with his flair on at the DFAC, told the CSM i was his DS, and CSM asked why he was wearing that flair. Explained to the CSM, but he made me have the guy take the flair off because he didnt want a trainee to have more flair than the drill sergeants.

I would ask whoever is handeling your re-entry. I started basic in 82, and we had 3 Nam vets in our platoon. They were treated the same as everyone else. One of them didn't make it through training. If I were to re-enter under the same basic training climate as 82, I wouldn't wear them, as you could be chosen for extra responsibility or given extra harsh treatment by a petty Drill Sergeant. By not wearing them, you may be considered out-of-uniform, so consider that too.

of course you can wear any award you have orders for, does not matter if you are in basic again. When I went thr BCT in 1973 we had several viet nam vets who did this dance with a DI that only had a good conduct ribbon and an NDSM, guess who won, th guys with the airborne wings and CIBs

I never wore ribbons. What for? After 19 months and 1 day, I arrived at Ft.Llewis, put on dress greens and went home on a night flight, so I would go unnoticed. 30 yrs later I read some where that I could get free ribbons and stuff. It took 6 months for them to send them. I looked at them for the first time and left them in the box. My kids will find them when I die; probably toss them. I never stand up, if they ask veterans to stand. This way I don't hear the "Baby killer" taunts from folks that just don't know...

I don't believe it has been changed since I left the Army 35 years ago, but it was always allowed to wear any permanent insignias, certifications, awards and medals that you were awarded and identified in your personnel record or DD 214.
Insignias earned as an NCO are permanent. These include MP Badge, Drill Instructor, Recruiter, etc.
I knew an SSG, E-6 that got out for 2 years that had earned a Dill badge. He came back as a CPL, E-4 and was allowed to wear his badge while assigned to an OSUT basic training unit for AIT training. The Drill Instructors were not happy about it.

Wear them. You may get some harassment from some Drills but eventually you'll have a chance to graduate number 1 in your class. I joined in 81. Went to Benning Harmony Church. We had a couple of Vietnam Vets in my class. I'll always remember this one guy who was a door gunner in Vietnam. Our first dress greens inspection the guy had more chest lettice than the 1SG.

Well let me try this out....would you walk around without your E-4 rank on at Basic Training? NO...So the Air Assault and Airborne badges should be fixed to your uniform regardless of any EGO charged DS. He may just be mad that he doesn't have said Qualifications would be my guess. You're badges are part of your uniform in every capacity. If you don't wear them you could be written up(not likely, i wouldn't think) for being out of uniform.

I'm sure the Drill Instructors will already know your prior service record already so they will either give you shit from the start or won't but for sure they will expect a hell of a lot more out of you compared to the rest of the recruits. As far as for sure being allowed? Your recruiter should know the answer to that.

Having been in the Navy we all understand the Army gives out medals for standing around. Yes, I know, you can be a hero on a ship and the commanding officer will get the medal. So, do you really want to draw attention to yourself in basic training? Good chance by just being the older one you will draw attention to yourself. Like Reagan said "Its amazing what you can accomplish when you don't care who get's the credit." Be a real leader and help the others excel to include your company commander. You can wear them on the parade ground during graduation. Maybe one of the guys you help will introduce you to his older sister.

After 16 years out of service I came back in the ANG in Bakersfield, Ca. My primary MOS was 11F40 and I had 11H and 11D. I did not have an 11B MOS.
I wore my CIB, Combat Crew Wings...... and on my right shoulder was K Company 75th Infantry Reg scroll over 4 lost Lts.
I had to attend a 2 week 11B course at Ft Ord. I never did fully understand why?? Top cadre was a Tabbed SFC who had also served with another 75th Reg company in Nam.
I was 40 and way out of shape. (unless you consider round a shape:) I sucked it up and kept-up. I would have been ashamed to whine or puss out.
I wore all my patches.
I had a great time. Like basic, AIT, pre-recondo school ....etc. I would not give a penny to do it again nor a million $ to forget.
Wear your badges and be proud. Either keep up or lead.
Also heads up:
The Honorable and well earned abbreviations by those who earned them. WAC, WAV and Donut Dolly are no longer honored and a counseling statement is now a piece of paper.

Wear your badges! I was in a similar situation, but with a difference. When I came back in after a break in service, I was, like you, an E-4 (lost a stripe when I re-enlisted). I was made "platoon guide" and wore an armband with SGT (E-5) on it. But because my platoon weren't sure whether to call me sergeant or specialist, I stopped wearing my specialist insignia until we graduated.
In your case, there would be no confusion, so I say again - wear your badges! You earned them!

When I went to USAFR after 13 years from active duty separation, I had a new AFSC and went to tech school. I was the only one in the class with a National Defense ribbon. That was nothing. We sent a MSgt with the new AFSC and he had a Purple Heart. He was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge. This was 1984.
