Promotions are based on best qualified, and then slots available. We all want to know, when we miss, why we missed, but the Army generally does not tell us. Very impersonal business.Response by COL Charles Williams made Jul 4 at 2015 12:57 AM2015-07-04T00:57:18-04:002015-07-04T00:57:18-04:00CSM Michael J. Look at the AAR (SFC William Laws) expressed his direct personal thoughts on the AAR already. You could also reach out to the members of the panel within your field that were on the board and see if they have time to go over your records once again.

For me it was a lot of luck and timing, accepting the challenges of some difficult opportunities, doing my absolute best to take care of Soldiers and accomplish every mission while ensuring I protect my Commander at every level.

I've had peers tell me that they always looked at the AAR of the next two higher rank - so as a SSG they were trying to ensure they were qualified to become a MSG, as a SFC they were trying to be qualified for SGM....its really a simple thought process that proved if they were qualified for selection two up then they would be amongst the best at the very next rank.Response by CSM Michael J. My son just recently enlisted and want to give him some good information to start his career. So all CSM who see this post let me know if I am off base. First I know the Armys attempt to give you feedback in the AAR is not very helpful. I would say when looking at the AAR comments that you need to look for specific areas. for example if 80% of those who got picked up have a BS degree and you don't you better work on college. If your an NCO looking to make the E7 and above ranks and have not done DS, recruiter, Audie Murphy/Morales, AGR, SMU(special mission unit) you are hurting yourself. Yes we all know someone who made CSM who doesn't have any of the above named qualifications but it will help you get promoted. You may agree or disagree, but some of my former peers on the NCO side have completed at least two of the above and are all CSM at the BN and BDE level. Again having gone through what you have when I did not make SFC first look in the primary and was confused as to why and why I didn't make MSG in the secondary and wanted to know why I understand the frustration. Hang in there and keep working!!Response by MAJ Private RallyPoint Member made Jul 4 at 2015 8:41 AM2015-07-04T08:41:29-04:002015-07-04T08:41:29-04:00SFC A.M. My friend a 71L could not make e7. 1980. He worked in the pentagon for the g3. They promoted him the day he retired to SFC. He had a tour in Vietnam. He ran a hotel in Saigon. Difficult job.
