Can you be billed for supply after ETS/Honorable Discharge from Army?

I was honorably discharged back in 2012 and 4 years later I receive a bill in the mail sent to my parents address that i never turned in various equipment that was issued to me on a hand receipt ( the hand receipts last date of issue was for a year after i was discharged and does not have my signature on it i would like to point out)

Did you clear the Unit and CIF? If you do then they have the burden of proof. If you write your name on the hand receipt it can used as a signature. If it is typed, then you can get away with it. Good luck my brother

CPL SERGENT: Recommend to ALL Soldiers that they check their AKO Account "My Clothing Record" to make certain you Turn-in ALL Military OCIE prior to departure from Deployment, transferring to a NEW Unit and from the Army, LTC-G.

I know it sounds stupid.... BUT I would look into it. Only because if it is legit, & it comes up in an audit, they WILL get their $. Speaking from experience.

Team- AKO, My Clothing Account and the installation CIF Hand Receipts are two separate software programs. There are no reconcile functions between the two. The item of record is the CIF hand receipt from the installation the Soldier cleared. //
I would gather up my clearance paperwork and CIF hand receipt and then contact the CIF for their print out.

You can counter sue the government and see if anyone shows up to court. I assume if someone shows up they will bring proof you own this gear. Honestly, it sounds like someone is try to CYA at CIF.

I only ask this because my OER ended up in the file of my uncle by mistake (we have the same name). Is it possible they sent it to the wrong person?

Contest and fight the validity. The burden of proof should be on them. Also most debts to the govt can only be collected for up to six years.

Hopefully you still have your clearing papers. If you don't and the Supply System still shows you missing items then they can recoup money from your taxes. Your signature is irrelevant as they just printed out from online. You can fight it if you have your clearing papers or if you don't then that would involve getting sworn statements from the Soldiers you served with saying they can attest to you turning in all your gear. Either way good luck.

I had a similar problem on a pcs if you cleared the unit they said you were good to go and cannot hold you responsible any longer

As long as you have your paperwork saying you turned in everything. And that you cleared your unit and CIF you shouldnt have any issues

Yes, the government will make every effort it can to recover the gear or the money, in fact, they can garnish your tax returns. Now the question is will they. Hang on to the letter but don't worry about it, it is a significant amount of effort to do the garnishment and you have a reasonable case to say "...I don't know what you're talking about..." and get it written off. If you still have the creek go to the nearest CIF, explain the situation, show then the letter and turn it in.

They can try. If I remember correctly Your unit has 30 days after your discharge date to do a FLIPL of any missing equipment that you had missing. You have the right to appeal and challenge any and all charges that your old unit brings against you.

First if they do not have signatures and do not have a transfer record of you to the unit I would challenge it on the basis you turned it in. Second try and find your inventory out processing sheet.

I had the same thing happen to me when I transferred from Army Reserve to Army National Guard. Of-course if you have a signed hand receipt, it is easy to dispute the changes. Consult with a local JAG officer, I done that same action. We agreed that the unit had a change of command inventory and the unit wanted to clear their books without responsibility to currently assigned personnel. We also agreed that the unit commander had an opportunity to start a statement of changes within a year; not four years later. Fight the issue and get a letter from JAG.
