Until the point where you ETS or sign a letter stating that you are not going to reenlist, to the Army you are a moveable asset to be moved where it needs, when it needs. It does not look at your ETS until the point in time much closer to your point of PCS and then you are given the option. Either sign a Dec letter and ETC or re-up and take the assignment. They always go with the mentality of you are a career soldier until you tell them no you are not. Getting popped over to another local unit/assignment isn't unheard of especially for folks who are pending EAS/ETS. It helps them clear out the folks who aren't in the next training/deployment cycle and allows smaller shops and sections get a boost of manpower where you could be useful for a short term amount of time. Is this a PCS or just a new assignment on post. You can come up on levy at any time; however, there are certain determinations to decide before you can go. If it is in CONUS you'll have to ask your personnel office, I retire in 1994 and am not up on current regs. Is this an overseas assignment? If so, you will have to re-enlist before you can accept the assignment if you do not have the time in service to complete the assignment. Can they involuntarily extend you? That depends on how long, there are limitations. If you have the goal of staying in the Army, then you need to seek out opportunities as soon as possible. Average assignment length is 36 months (with some exceptions). If you're coming close to that 36 month window, or even your reenlistment opportunity window (ROW), you need to reach out to seek opportunities. Otherwise you sit and wait become needs of the Army. Act fast and act early!

Sadly, as SFC Boyd mentioned, the only options are to extend or reenlist to meet the service remaining requirement for that assignment, or sign a declination of continued service and ride your contract out to the end. If you want to stay in, but don't care for the assignment, then extend or reenlist for the minimum amount of time. As you soon as reach your first year on station, two-thirds time on station for OCONUS, or within a month or two of your ROW, start engaging with your Career Counselor. Sign the Dec statement or re-enlist. This is common, and forcing this decision this early keeps the army from having to adjust assignments last minute.

Your first act here should be to sit down with the career counselor ASAP.
