He'll get a general discharge and have to say "I almost joined once" basic training is only 10 weeks and ait is a little longer. Tell him to buck up and get the job done he signed up for. NG often pays some tuition assistance- so that will be gone. It will keep him from rejoin a nservice w/o a waiver and those occasionally disappear completely. It could hurt him with some employers (particularly those with vets in HR or management). WTF can't he just suck it up and transfer to a unit closer to college? Lot of people suggest call the recruiter. He is not wasting recuiter times, recruiters got paid to do his/her job. Send letter to command recuiter.
