Can you get promoted to SGT without a valid weapons card? 2018-07-16T09:49:30-04:00 SGT Private RallyPoint Member 3797399

On my PPW it says MLI-RECOMMENDED E5 and eligible but weapons card is expired.
I submitted my weapons card to s1 a while back but they finally got a chance to update my erb today because everyone was on leave and they were swamped. When I went to my SSG board (granted that was 2009), my weapons card was expired. I was deployed and started the deployment with a 249 but they made me take a M16 about five months in. Then we moved from north to south - and we didn't have any ranges in that time by the board. Well, S1 just changed the date or something on my 249 card. The CSM saw it and he stopped my board because he was confused why I had a 249 card but a M16 and then said if I could get qualified before the packet was due to brigade, I'd be promotable. If not, I'd come back next month. I went to S3 and the training person found a Reserve Infantry unit going out to a range the next couple days so I went with them, qualified, done.

So you need to just go to S1 and make sure they get it updated or have your NCO go with you or talk to them about getting it updated. If you want to get promoted you have to make sure things get done though. I doubt you still could get promoted with an expired card even now. As long as the new card was dated before the expiration of the old one, the commander can authorize an exception to policy, allowing you to keep your printable standing. I was promoted to SGT without one. During the surge in Iraq, there was a temporary ammo shortage. My CO provided a memo to the board stating that "no fault of the Soldier..."

But, that was an extraordinary circumstance.
