The key word in this section is "undergarments".

Later on in AR 670-1, the regulation refers you to DA Pam 670-1 regarding what items constitute "undergarments".

In DA Pam 670-1, section 18-30, the tan undershirt is listed as an undergarment.

"e. Undershirt, sand or tan 499 (male and female).
(1) Type. The undershirt is a clothing bag issue item or optional purchase items.
(2) Description. The material is cotton knitted cloth or 50 percent cotton and 50 percent polyester, with quarter- length sleeves and a crew neck, or is of a similar commercial design.
(3) How worn. All personnel will wear the sand or tan 499 undershirt with all utility uniforms, except for and garrison culinary uniforms."

So, if DA Pam 670-1 defines the undershirt as an undergarment (which it does), and AR 670-1 uses that definition (which it does) and says that wearing undergarments with civilian clothing is allowed (which it also does), then you are good.Response by LTC Kevin B. made Aug 2 at 2018 11:56 AM2018-08-02T11:56:41-04:002018-08-02T11:56:41-04:001SG Charles Hunter3849778

You can probably get away with it, but I can't see where anyone with taste would want to, unless for PT. Personally, I wouldn't wear it for anything but yard work.Response by 1SG Charles Hunter made Aug 3 at 2018 10:55 AM2018-08-03T10:55:25-04:002018-08-03T10:55:25-04:00LtCol George Carlson3853702

You might want to consider something that is implied, not stated. The term "undergarment" means worn under something else. The regs do not say, but certainly suggest that it can be worn under civilian outer garments. Wearing what is essentially an undershirt with PT gear in the gym may be the least onerous. Shopping at the grocery store, or eating out is probably pushing it a bit far.Response by LtCol George Carlson made Aug 4 at 2018 10:58 PM2018-08-04T22:58:30-04:002018-08-04T22:58:30-04:002018-08-02T10:15:34-04:00
