I was inclined to poo-poo this report in my own mind, CAPT (Join to see), but the very end of the report mentions that the toxins resulting from the burn pits have been proven to cause cancer. That's serious. They should have used the incinerators if they were working. And if they were not working, they should have been fixed or brought up to standard.

‘Indefensible’: Report reveals extent of ‘burn pit’ pollution inhaled by US troops in Afghanistan...
U.S. troops who risked their lives battling insurgents in Afghanistan were for years facing another unseen enemy at bases across the country: toxic fumes from open-air “burn pits” that were used long after orders to phase them out.

SFC Fung. When I was in Afg on 2010-2011, there were lots of rumors like that, even from docs. I wanted a definitive answer and asked a congressman who sat on the Veterans Committee to ask VA. Response was that there was no blanket disability for exposure to air pollution and everyone would be considered on a case-by-case basis.
