How does one change GWOT expeditionary medal to Iraq campaign medal? I was deployed to Iraq 2003-2004. Additionally, any advice regarding how to acquire ribbons which may be authorized would be greatly appreciated. I have been retired since 2007. This is Vanity- trying to create a shadow box for myself!
Thanks all,
Mark

I don't think so. Your orders from OIF mean you are entitled to wear the ICM according to HRC. The ICM replaces the GWOT expeditionary medal, so you can't have both for the same campaign. Please get a second opinion on this though Sir.

SSG Carlos Madden I see what you're doing taggin me all over the place...
Back on topic, MAJ Mark F. I did some research in AR 600-8-22 (pages 34-36 cover the ICM and GWOTEM, I'd hyperlink it but don't know how) which covers Military Awards. From my understanding you are qualified for both since both medals existed at the time you were overseas. From the ICM section: Under no condition will personnel receive the ICM, the GWOTEM, the GWOTSM, the ACM, or the AFEM for
the same action, time period, or service. Also from the the ICM section: Servicemembers qualified for the GWOTEM by reasons of service between 19 March 2003 and 30 April 2005, in Iraq, will remain qualified for the medal. Any such Soldier may be awarded the ICM in lieu of the GWOTEM for such service.
My takeaway from this is that you qualify for both, but are only able to wear/display one since it was only for 1 qualifying time period. If you prefer the ICM you do qualify, but if you are concerned about having the correct paperwork for it you would have to submit a DD215 correction just as 1stSgt (Join to see) said below. I have actually had to file a DD215 for an award I received well after getting home from a deployment. It's not exactly a quick process, but depending on where you live your local Veteran Service Officer, if you have one, or someone from a VFW or DAV might be able to assist in the process. Hope that helped!

SSG Carlos Madden - I'm pretty sure if you have 2 or more deployments you can wear both GWOTE and ICM

Submit for a correction to the Army board of corrections. Medal can be purchased from Medals of American or from eBay.
