Civilian Armorer Training

I served the last 5 years of my career with 10th SFG. During that time I was very lucky to have gone to numerous military and civilian Armorer schools such as Glock, Sniper Weapon Systems Repair and Joint Armorer Course at Crane.

Now that I am a civilian I would like to continue working on guns and maybe one day start my own shop.

Any suggestions on schools or other opportunities?

Chief, first step would be to get out of Maryland! That's what Beretta is doing. A lot of the big guys, Remington, Barrett, play in Tennessee (GOOD OL ROCKY TOP!), I would imagine they would probably have some schools out there.

You may want to hook up with the local PD or Sheriff to see if they have a need for a department armorer. With your background, that may get you the connections you need to eventually open up a viable business. Or see if any local gunshops need a gunsmith.

Sir, do you have certain makes of firearms that you like? If so, I would check out those manufacturers for courses they may offer. For example, Sig Sauer has an Armorers course that I have been wanting to attend. I think that is one of the best ways to get certified.

Also, like LTC Labrador mentioned, apply to a local PD or Sheriff's department. Many LEAs will pay to send you to multiple courses.

LMO has some good machine gun courses in NV. Keep an eye on USA Jobs for opportunities at Crane, Anniston, APG, Picatinny, Albany, Warren, etc.

maybe I can help you out. I was a 91f (small arms/artillery repair) in the army and worked for Glock, then got a contracting gig overseas and am still working in the armorer field, my best advice is get all the factory certs you can because thats what most companies want. Glock, Beretta, AR's, M2,249 and 240 if youre going to be working with the military or contracting, some companies will pay for you to go to courses and others wont, some require more , some less, hope i was helpful
