Some career management fields, such as medically or technically oriented ones, provide training that closely mirrors a civilian college classroom, allowing Soldiers to earn a greater amount of credit. Soldiers with an MOS
in infantry or artillery, on the other hand, are given a great deal of training, but their areas of expertise do not relate to a particular civilian degree. To remedy this, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command created the College of the American Soldier as an extension of the SOCAD program.

Actually they have been doing this for many years, it has just been not as publicly known by most unless they have asked for the evaluation, when I was taking some NCO lead classes back at Hood in the mid-90s, they were starting the transition of this then by giving you college credits for classes such as counseling, military writing, BRM, PT, etc., etc. It has sort of disappeared somewhat during the OIF/OEF years due to the dual-pronged wars, but it is now being brought back up with more emphasis from all the SMs that are getting out and having to start from scratch with their college degree pursuits.

It has been an evolving product that is finally coming to fruition for all MOSs now which is good for all.
