Compared to the rest of the country, is the military overpaid? Figuring in all benefits, retirement, leave, job security etc...

I don't understand why a member of the military would even ask this question. Let me ask it back, SGM Quick do you feel that you are overpaid and/or over compensated? If you truly do, there are lots of soldier charities that you could fund with your overpayments, including directly supporting some soldiers widow from OIF or other campaigns.

Not sure if you're reading this topic correctly, SFC Don Ward, but I never asked/said service members are overpaid...we're well compensated.
Also, I give plenty to military-friendly charities.

Considering the nature of our collective jobs, no. We receive what is deserved.

We work with a standard pay according to our rank and additional skills. CQ, Staff Duty, weekend details, subject to emergency or accountability formations, no guaranteed work hours (no definite 9-5), and no overtime pay. We earn a decent pay, but we definitely aren't overpaid.
We have nice compensations (2 weeks leave, healthcare, BAH, COLA, room and board, school tuition, DFACs, etc.) and relative job security. Those I feel are what even out the playing field with our civilian counterparts. And are what keep the new recruits coming.

Whoops! My mind was on summer leave haha. But yeah, 30 days of paid leave a year in an ENTRY level position is outstanding compared to civilian benefits.

I don't think the playing field is even. A nice chuck of military's pay is not taxed. One of your entitlements is having your rent and utilities paid. As a civilian, our rent and utilities come right out our paychecks. do you know to live comfortable in the DC area one must make over a $100K. That means I'm not making it because my paycheck isn't close to a $100K. When the gas prices were steady going up, we didn't get any raises to help. When the gas went up so did groceries. I'll stop right there.
FYI,not everyone's job is 9-5. and we do have civilians who deploy.
