I'd rather place bets on whether the appointment will happen before the senate changes hands, or during recess, and without senate confirmation. I think AFTER the Senate changes hands, and by established process is too far off the table to even consider a possibility.

Unfortunately with our supposed present CNC, I see nothing more than a clueless politician and am concerned for the welfare of our military. Concerned because the nation, military and the world have been tossed aside for ignorance and political BS agenda.

I'm not sure that it would make any difference under the current administration. If the nominee was legitimate, they would be removed in a short period of time.

Thank you for the Fox News piece. Lots of folks of whom I've never heard. But then, I'm a retired guy. Seems like for just two years, the president could appoint someone already at the Pentagon in the leadership who served under Sec'y Hagel. Also, I'm a big USAF fan. We typically bring not only military experience but also intel experience. I'm a big fan of Air Force Chief, Gen'l Welsh. But then, he graduated a few years ahead from the Academy. I like the idea of someone with intel experience, say CIA or NSA, AND military experience as it's key to integrate the two areas as Defense Secretary.

I don't think anybody wants it. I thought Hagel was horrible & will leave it at that. As much of the press is now saying, the big problem with all the cabinet positions to due to the micromanagement from the White House. The President & his National Security Council are by passing the SecDef, ordering certain detrimental decisions, not accepting any discussion or criticism, & more focused on the politics what the DoD is doing versus the reality of things. Cutting back the military no matter what. The WH really doesn't care that threats in the world are growing. Also ordering the various agencies to do other agencies' jobs. Even planning for possible but not politically accepted possibilities such as boots on the ground to fight ISIS is taboo to the WH. How many times in the past we still made plans over & over again for unlikely yet realistic scenarios. Our military leadership can't even bring that up. So until the WH stops micromanaging, it doesn't seem like anybody is going to want the job as SecDef.
