Referencing Milper 22-029

It looks like a year of TIG has been reduced to be In the Zone. A 1LT I mentor showed it to me, and if the time lines hold true for next year as well he'll "pin" CPT at 2.9 years 1LT TIG, whereas my peers and myself pinned at 3.9 years 1LT to CPT.

I guess the answer is yes, it appears they did knock a year off. It doesn't look like this feeds into the MAJ boards yet based on the FY 22 MAJ Board published last November. Hopefully this follows into FY23 and beyond.

Yes, zones for consideration fluctuate at every level depending on numbers. If there is a deficiency in one rank then a broader net is casts for promotions.
It not fair. I had to wait over 3 to CPT and 7 to MAJ. I was told that projection to LTC would be another 7, but that is based on the current staffing. If a bunch of officiers retire sooner than later, then my chances for ealier promotion would increase.

Yea, I figured that, but didn't see a bump in MAJ for FY22. This will make or break my ability to hit LTC before my reach MDR. With CCC done, I can go completely into coast mode for the next 10 years if LTC is off the table. If I can shave a year off either MAJ or LTC from the previous few boards' TIG that will make all the difference.

MAJ seems to be where the real stress starts. I've not met a MAJ who's job and position in the USAR I envy.

What will probably happen is MAJ is sped up a little, then I bust my ass only to find LTC is slowed down at the end there by the usual take more give less process that the military works under.

I had a similar perspective when I commisioned. The timelines were not as spread between ranks and LTC or even COL was abtainable. Unfortunately, things haven;t gone as planned and I will probably be retiring as a MAJ with 20 years. Not sure that there is enough incentive to keep me in another 5-10 to have LTC pay at 60 years old.

Maybe it has to do with the retention problems created my Covid-19 and mandatory vaccinations.

Not an unreasonable theory, but I noticed the vacancy problems before CV19. It was looking like the USAR was happy with LT's running the show.

CPT (Join to see) - That certainly makes things interesting for their motive.

Just checking, but are you mixing TIG and TIS? Officer promotion regs are federally set. If you’re in the NG you may run into the issue of needing a “slot” in order to be promoted even if you meet the criteria and must also fall under the umbrella of your MOS. For instance after I returned home from AFG I transferred to a Transportation company as the XO then CO but could not be promoted because I was MI in a Logistics BN and they only had 1 MI O-3 slot and since I was not in the slot and even though I meet all criteria to be promoted I could not be. Now had I been Quartermaster, Transportation, or Ordnance I would have been set because they fall under the Logistics branch. Reserves and AD are different in the ways in which they fill vacancies so I couldn’t speak specifically to them.
Rank. TIS. TIG.
1LT/O2 18 months 18 months
CPT/O3 4 yr + 1 yr 2 years
MAJ/O4 10 yr +/- 1yr 3 years
LTC/O5 16 yr +/- 1 yr 3 years

Hope this helps in any way.
