My team had a beat up old 7 ton (MTVR) that pushed a mine-roller. We named it 'whiskers' for the guide-rods that came off the mineroller at angles, made it the vic call sign too for humor's sake.

Way back when I was in ROTC Advanced Camp, the other prior-service cadet in my squad and I gathered our squad together for a quick round of self-introductions. One of the female cadets admitted that she had just gotten married a few weeks prior, so I immediately tagged her as "Mom" despite her protests that she and her husband had no desire for children.

Much to her chagrin, the nickname stuck so thoroughly that she was de facto promoted to platoon Mom for the duration, and was even called out by instructors who "heard" that our platoon had a designated Mom.

My Nissan Xterra is named, "Patton," because it's my tank.

In my civilian occupation I carry a pistol. My primary pistol is named, an expletive I cannot state here, after my ex-wife (AKA, "Our Lady Of Perpetual Misery"). My back-up pistol is named, "Mighty Mouse."

My first car (1969 Mustang painted pale blue) was the Turquoise APC. My current truck (F-150 with camper shell) is the Great White Tank.

I'm sure most senior NCOs have had that soldier who just cannot shut his mouth. We called ours "Furbee", after the toy that chattered in a made up language.

I've named most of my cars and trucks. A 1970 F100 Custom Sport (was very quick) named Old Yeller, 1980 Chevy Monza named P.O.S., A 1988 Buick Regal named (I forgot this one), a 1994 Trail Blazer named Betsy and my current ride a 2009 TrailBlazer SS named Vera. I had a few cars here and there that never earned a name.

As far as naming Commanders...lets not talk about that.

We had a girl with a wild eye. The DS's had a field day with her since she always looked like one eye was looking somewhere else, One day we were doing parade drills and they called "Eyes, Right", and she popped in my mind, I couldn't keep a straight face, but that was her name from that day forward.

Before I was an infantry officer I led an MLRS platoon. The launchers had individual names, the standard macho stuff. One of my guys told me I should name my Humvee. I did lots of route recon and scouting and designating launcher and replenishment sites and I'd lead our convoys so I replied, "I'll name it "Minesweeper". "

Everyone got a good laugh.

I nicknamed my immediate lt. Lt. "Barnyard", because his last name was Barnard. He was mean.
