Way back when I was in ROTC Advanced Camp, the other prior-service cadet in my squad and I gathered our squad together for a quick round of self-introductions. One of the female cadets admitted that she had just gotten married a few weeks prior, so I immediately tagged her as "Mom" despite her protests that she and her husband had no desire for children.

Much to her chagrin, the nickname stuck so thoroughly that she was de facto promoted to platoon Mom for the duration, and was even called out by instructors who "heard" that our platoon had a designated Mom.

To her credit, she took it with good humor, and the rest of the platoon got behid it to the extent that, when an instructor asked who our Mom was the whole platoon would identify her and then back her 100-percent in whatever motivational antics the instructor would have her lead us in. It gave her extra opportunities to shine, and having a Mom was something which easily distinguished us from the other platoons.

As you might suspect, Wally and I were both very big on making glues that would bind our folks together, and we didn't hesitate to improvise creatively.
