Throwing out edible food is certainly a waste in principle. However the process of determining when food is no longer "edible" is not simple.<br />I sent a message to my cousin who lives in France to ask him about it. Once I get a response I will update this post. LTC Stephen F. I am sure a lot of others do the same thing. But you run into a lot of liability. The charity that does this has to accept a lot of responsibility to do this. In our times a lot of them don't want to do this and would rather just take money. ( 2 days before best buy date) to several places. I know of two homeless shelters and one free drug rehab they give food to. All chains should follow and do the same. I have worked in retail and groceries for years. A lot of items are good as high as 6 months after the expiration date. I wouldn't be afraid to eat canned foods a year or two out of date as long as there is not bulges, bad dents or rust. We live in a wasteful world. I was told we had to write off and throw everything away where I work.. I still box it up and take it to a Care Mission that feeds the poor and homeless. I told My DM I was doing it and if he didn't like it to fire me. I know several old people that live on limited incomes and I'll bag just out of date food up and drop it off to them after I get off work. One elderly couple told me they went two weeks without income and would have had very little to eat if I hadn't brought them several boxes of food that had just went out of date.
