Anniversary and loss of a family member on 8 December 2015 - Did you know this is the reason I Work hard for Veterans - My Family Lost a Brother, Veteran, Father, and husband last year to Suicide? This is one of the many reasons - there are thousands more out there needing our help!

RP Members we lost another Brother, Veteran, Father, and Husband to Suicide yesterday in Killeen, Texas. This was my wife's father who served and fought in Vietnam as a Sniper and who came back to this nation with severe PTSD. His name was Loren Leon Hazeldahl

We will make sure that he is buried with all the honors afforded an American Veteran over the next few days.

I share this with the RP Community because we have to all work together to try and reduce this loss of life due to PTSD, TBI, MST, severe wounds and disabilities, unemployment, and homelessness for our veterans that are struggling. There are so many and I'm sure that all of you have been affected by this in one way or another. We have seen many of our close friends in the service, family members, relatives, and those we have served along side end their lives in this manner.

We cannot forget them and we can't leave those that are suffering behind.

Helping Veterans successfully transition from the battlefront to the home front, NVTSI is a San Diego-based 501(c)(3) dedicated to assisting veterans in their reentry. Col. I know the felling of loss of a loved one, and close friends that mean so much to us on any level is hard. Please pass to your family my heart felt condolences, and out thoughts and prayers are with you and yours at this time. The hardest thing to do when you lose someone so close to you is....just to breathe. This may sound silly to some, but think about it. Your heart hurts so much that the very act of breathing makes it harder. The pain will never go away, but over time you will learn to breathe again.

Many consider suicide to be a sin. Jewish tradition (in the Code of Jewish Law) teaches that suicide is a symptom of mental illness, not a sin, and that one who commits suicide may be buried normally in a Jewish cemetery, contrary to popular belief. Rabbi Elliot Dorff, the Conservative Jewish denomination ethicist and theologist writes this in his works as well.

I know Jews are a minority, but the principle remains the same, and many could learn from this. This is a step towards healing, rather than a step of guilt and pain...

Sir, so sorry to hear this. The holiday's are especially tough for a lot of people. I lost a brother to an overdose in 95, been 20 years, and it feels like yesterday. The pain dulls with time but the memories never dies.

Colonel...I am deeply saddened when we lose a brother in arms...especially to suicide. this is a shame as I have dealt with attempted suicide in the past and still struggle daily with PTSD. For years I've been hearing people say, 'you're not injured, be a man' or 'just snap out of it' people WITH PTSD know all too well what I go through. Not all injuries are seen. My own wife knew something was wrong as did my own mom. If it was not for them, I would not have known about PTSD myself, nor received the help nor my disability from the VA and SSA. We must take a moment and see these vets and talk to them, and let them know we care about them. It saved my life, perhaps by talking to them yall can save a life too.

I am so sorry for your loss. I struggle with PTSD due to MST. Some days just really suck. On really bad days I go to the dog park and it never fails to cheer me up. Having a beagle is good too.

Please accept my most sincere condolences. It must be horrible for the entire family and should have been prevented. As you know, we lose more vets to suicide than war. The VA will never do it but why not open and staff all of the closed military bases and offer free housing and food to homeless vets? I guarantee that the lift in morale would reduce the overall, current rate of 22 suicides per day significantly. When you are down and out suicide may look attractive but it is NOT. Suicide is the one sin God cannot forgive. If you're dead, God CAN'T forgive you....

Hey I wanted to share an update with everyone that posted on this discussion - As you know my wife's Father, my Father-In-Law (Vietnam Veteran with PTSD) committed suicide on December 8th, 2015 and was buried with military honors on Wednesday, December 16, 2015. I wanted to thank all the RallyPoin Members for ther condolences and kind words on that post. I shared them with my wife upon her return. She wanted me to share her eulogy that she provided on Wednesday for here father. She shared a poem that really puts into perspective what a lot of veterans and active duty soldiers are going through today - we must stop suicides from happening.

Here is what she wanted to share (poem):

I'd Like to thank you all for coming today to remember Loren Hazeldahl

W.S. Gilbert wrote, "Its love that makes the world go round!" Well, if that's true, I'm sure you'd all agree, the world spun a little faster with Dad in it.

I'd like to read a poem, which I felt was fitting for this difficult time

No-one knew the true torment,
that you were going through;
We only kept on seeing
what we really wanted to.

We saw the outward smile,
But not your inner pain;
No-one ever truly thought
That you would never sing again.

Forgive us if we failed to see,
what we could do to aid;
Or if we failed to comprehend,
How much you were afraid.

We pray your mental anguish,
Will now forever cease;
And that your deep anxieties,
be replaced with peace.

We know your pain invaded,
every single thought you had;
It made you cry internally,
And so very deeply sad.

But we in turn remember,
The good times, not the bad;
We'll remember when you sang for us,
And not when you were sad.

So when we think about your life,
We won't dwell upon its close,
We'll remember all the good times,
And forgive the path you chose.

We'll remember all the happiness

I remember Dad telling me, "Baby, you sure can light up a room!"
Well Dad, I'm here to tell you.... The world is now a lot less bright without you in it!

If he were with us today, He would ask us not to mourn his death, but to celebrate his life. He would tell us to love our true friends and families unconditionally and hold them very close, because in the end, they are all what truly matter.

Dad, may the Lord hold you in the palm of His hand.

Living life is already difficult without the stigma of a title. I retired in 2003 and never knew that I had PTSD, although I had an incident while on recruiting duty in 1994 that lead to me leaving my tour early. I reported to mental health for about 6 weeks and they knew I had PTSD; however, they failed or neglected to even place it in my official files. So, if the US Army at that time kept it from my official files, I can only imagine what it would do to soldiers now. I understand what stigma is associated with PTSD and live with it daily. After returning as a contractor in 2010, from Kandahar, Afghanistan, I was in such a state that I decided I had to get treatment at all costs or lose my sanity. My treatment team was amazed at my progress after 6 months and many will tell you that they believed, I wasn't going to make it. I was tattered and frayed - mentally. I lived outside the wire between the red zone and amber zone at night and worked in the red zone by day. I witnessed kidnappings, explosions, shootings, and wondered many times when was my time going to be. I survived until 1st vacation term and resigned.
I endured 6 months of outpatient PTSD and personal recovery programs, almost as if being at the VA hospital was a full-time job. The National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) Groups also helped twice a week. I joined a group that was sponsored by the Hampton VAMC (Virginia) which was comprised of veteran-to-veteran facilitators who had been seen and suffered from PTSD or other mental health illnesses. This gave me a feel of brotherhood and that there was someone who knew what I was dealing with in my life. This helped my healing process go smoother.
I recommend to any unit, group, or team to develop your own recovery group to assist and lead to service members to self-recovery through open dialogue. If someone does not want to deal with a mental health professional, at least they can talk with others who have or may want to get through this process of self recovery with people they trust. Maybe, if the military create training to aid soldiers in this process and model it like combat lifesaver training, we can recover a portion of the generation of combat soldiers that witnessed war at its worse.

It takes an individual, families, community, and nation to recognize what many Veterans and current military members often silently suffer. I know you have worked with SAVL before what happened in your family. The strong often suffer in silence, only sharing with those who have experienced the same experiences. Programs like the SAVL are needed.

I can relate and feel for your loss. My wife's father (Korean War Vet) committed suicide, though for a different reason (terminal cancer). He did it the day they brought the hospital bed home and he knew once he got in it, he was never getting out. My wife still misses him terribly and it was 30 years ago.

I still have family members in the military. I empathize with the pain and loss of many. Military solutions should be the absolute last resort so I advocate peaceful solutions by working with Veterans For Peace, Pax Christi and Military Families Speak Out. You do such commendable and heartfelt work for your Veteran community with great appreciation from Civilians such as myself.

I have a question for you Mikel.

During the summer as I watched the media coverage of many universities throughout our nation with many of the staff members and students having melt downs over our election process, my very first thought was this:

Having the tremendous opportunity to visit many of our military bases around the nation, as I was given tours of the bases I was introduced to the medical facilities, the onsite shopping, living quarters, and more.

The only thing that was never introduced too was the onsite fully accredited military university.
I know first hand as I watched military professionals work all day, in their on the job skilled profession to have to complete their preferred degree on line with no professor available that has the exact experience they are going through, to complete their course at night during family time which makes no sense to me. The military produces the most skilled engineers, medical professionals; etc that requires on the job training that should translate to CEUs toward their college degrees.

I know this is a long question, bear with me here, WHY DOES OUR MILITARY BASES NOT HAVE FULLY STOCKED ACCREDITED MILITARY UNIVERSITIES AROUND THE NATION?

Since each branch of our military has their own specialized skills, WHY DO WE NOT HAVE A DEDICATED MILITARY UNIVERSITY FOR EACH BRANCH OF THE MILITARY FOR EACH TIME ZONE?

Would eliminating this extreme void help Veterans transiting from active duty to the civilian community from working directly with military professionals who have served, went on to have a successful civilian career then come back to be a professor/guidance through the onsite military universities?

Until I myself was bitten with the bug PTSD, I never understood why we both male and female have the same trouble. And truth be told, if you have never thought about it, then it's a lie. My daughter pull me back off the cliff, she reminded me that I have grandchildren who look up to me, that my children still need me in their life, and it was time to set on the porch and tell my grandchildren of my battles in war. We all somehow have to find a reason everyday to push forward, to fight this cancer that eats at every part of our life, the demons of war feeds on our souls while we sleep, but again as in combat must fight on, this is not a sprint, but a marathon,

I have found that in my darkest hour of continplation when my PSTD was at its worst that I would show a happy positive guy on the outside , but inside I was in complete disparity, no one knew, not my wife, kids, parents or even the V.A.
So how does one find out if another needs help, what are the signs that trigger your gut feeling that someone needs help? Unfortunately I wasn't going to ask anyone, because I knew it would be a burden, I have also realized that even thou y'all say we need to help our brothers, a lot don't want you to help, they want to figure things out. In my mind at that time I didn't want to be a burden, I didn't want anyone's help or their time, I wanted to be left alone. Saying is one thing, doing is quite another, understanding what each individual person is going thru is unphanthable. Make sure before you offer to save a life that your willing to see it through to the end and that could be years

Time sometimes does not heal all wounds.
The suicide problem is a complicated multifaceted one.
My fear is the more it is talked about and brought to any community the more it becomes legitimized.
Rather than seeing more talk about suicide I'd rather see more talk about living and actions to help people live easier with their struggles.
There are many organizations for veterans talking about these issues.
I want to see less talk more action.
I do not believe there is a single group designed to meet the needs of a veteran at this very second. A person needing help with suicide needed it yesterday not three weeks from now and only if they meet specific criteria.
I hope rather than seeing my comment as negative you see it as positive

Mikel,

This is an additional response to your question of why Veterans do not seek additional help in services. I selected Trust based on directly listening to personal Veteran stories and the results showed Trust being the highest response.

I believe creating the long overdue on site military universities will give our Veterans the much needed tools to assist them mentally, emotionally and physically throughout their active duty career.

I have direct knowledge ranging from personal relationships to Veterans who have worked directly for me describing how their transition from active duty to civilian life was horrible and this is UNEXCEPTABLE.

Being persistent on presenting this long overdue on site military universities solution will strengthen the day military personnel transition from active duty to their very first step as a civilian eliminating the feeling as if they are entering a foreign environment and restoring their feelings of confidence and the comforts of home.

All of us should work hard for veterans. Whenever a family member or friend passes away it is a difficult time. These individuals need all the support they can get. In the case of a suicide we need to solve the reasons for such an event and put in place resources to combat these kinds of decisions.

I have regular appointments at the VA outpatient. It's so exciting to meet and chat with veterans from WW11 era to the current wars on terror. What really got my attention one day I had three appointments scheduled and one was for this constant nagging pain I had in my left leg. I had some time in between my appointments and was sitting outside under a tree enjoying the weather. All off a sudden I looked up and a Van was unloading some patients. I noticed one of them was in a wheel chair and had no legs. It made me sick seeing this because I was having leg pain and I just saw a gentlemen with no legs. As he rolled by me in the wheel chair with a big smile on his face we spoke to each other. The price we pay for serving rather in combat or peace time. Being in the military exposes us to many hazards that civilians would not know. I then if no other time realized that I had to dedicate time to doing whatever I can to help Veterans with their causes. I thought about an accident I had on active duty while stationed in Frankfurt Germany from a high fall. The Doctor said to me at the Hospital I was blessed not to be paralyzed or worst even dead. Seeing that gentlemen with no legs stroke a cord in me that we are all in this together as Veterans and we should dedicate time if possible into doing what we can to help each other. I really enjoy this Rally Point because it's an avenue to share valuable information with other Veterans. What saddens me mostly for all of us the struggles that we have to endure fighting the VA for benefits. In addition that so many politicians use Veterans issues to win votes and then don't deliver on their promises .

I am very sorry for your loss. I have been lucky to not have had to deal with this directly but my husband did when he was a little boy his mother was not in the military but she and her husband at the time committed suiside together and left my husband and his sister. So my husband and myself try very hard to make sure that other people don't have to go through what he had to as a child. Suiside is no joke on ether side and I feel so much for those that feel they have no other way out, and for the families left behind in the cases that do fallow through with it.
