Did you kow that there are three (3) Verses to the Marines' Hymn?

Verse One:

"From the halls of Montezuma To the shores of Tripoli’ ,

We fight our countrys battles In the air’, on land, and sea.

First to fight for right and freedom , And to keep our honor clean,

We are proud to claim the title Of United States Marines."

Verse Two:

"Our flags unfurl’d to every breeze From dawn to setting sun’;

We have fought in every clime and place Where we could take a gun.

In the snow of far-off northern lands And in sunny tropic scenes,

You will find us always on the job - The United States Marines."

Verse Three:

"Here’s health to you and to our Corps Which we are proud to serve;

In many a strife we’ve fought for life And never lost our nerve.

If the Army and the Navy Ever gaze on Heaven’s scenes,

They will find the streets are guarded By United States Marines."

Yes...yes I did know that. During the first phase of boot camp, we sang it every night....but were only allowed to sing the first verse. During the second phase we had earned the right to sing the first two. It was a big deal when we reached the third phase and could sing all three.

As a Dog faced Soldier even i knew that. What surprises many people is when a singer goes into the second, third, and fourth verse of the Star Spangled Banner.

One thing most Marines don't know is the birthday of the United States Marine Corps.

The birthday of the United States Marine Corps is July 11, 1798.

We didn't start singing the Marines hymn until the very end of boot camp. We recited the rifleman's creed every night once we hit the rack. Before hitting the rack we recited cycle of operation for the M16, and at Edson range we recited the characteristics of a proper shooting position while we were "on line". I suppose some would say my drill instructor's priorities were a little messed up. I still struggle with the last verse but I can shoot expert with the rifle every time.

I was Navy and knew it. I heard it that way over 60 years ago and see no reason to change it.
