If it was in a formal setting I always used Gunnery Sergeant or if there were officers or a Sergeant Major nearby who would hear me. Now if it was something like being out in the field and you needed direction on where to go or what to do I normally just said Gunny. I almost always call E7s and above by their full rank. I don&#39;t have to per Army regs but feel SRNCOs deserve that respect and I would never call a GySgt &#39;gunny&#39; unless you told me to. I am not a Marine and have not earned that right. After 21 year in the Marine Corps, I went to work for the Veterans Administration and even there the staff &amp; volunteers still called gunny.
