Military members execute multifaceted and challenging operations and the data may get transposed on an evaluation report or maybe even an award. A military award means little to a prospective Recruiter. They want to see transferable skills that equate into the civilian world. I had hundreds of truck drivers that logged thousands of miles in garrison and overseas. Did that garner them a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) or do 88M still have to take CDL certifications which range from 500-1,400.00. I also like how the Army has officers attend a college course and not even get a Master's degree out of it but the other Services produce Masters' Degree via their college. So, yes, there is much that can be done in the area of certifications for qualified experience. It's evolved in the name. Used to be ACAP but last I knew it was called TAP for Transition Assistance Program. It's a week long filled with workshops on resume building, interview skills, benefits management, etc. At one point, soldiers were encouraged to attend it up to a year prior to ETS date. I found the majority useful even if I did know a good chunk of it having worked in the civilian world for many years before going into the military. The probably could have done more on benefits, but when people are that far from getting out, it goes in one ear and out the other. The Army has ACAP. It's a series of PowerPoint briefings about transition. It talks about benefits and they even have a resume workshop. I wasn't allowed to go until I was 3 months out. It's my understanding that most units are supposed to have you start ACAP 6 months to a year from ETS. That being said, it's good enough. If you're motivated and have a plan it helps you learn some tools to help you be successful. If you're just hurrying to get through it won't help you transition. When I get back from deployment I just want to get back to my regular life and not have to sit through a class on resume writing. I can see how this would be useful to active duty people. I do think more should be done to translate military skills into civilian skills. Take my career field on non destructive inspection, there is a shortage of trained inspectors in the civilian sector. If they aligned the military training a bit more with the civilian side it would make the tansition easier for people.
