We often remarked that a true SP would know his badge number, and the grossly gung ho among us would probably try to work it into a post briefing, like the serial number on their service weapon.<br /><br />Is was just a randomly generated number imprinted at the bottom of the shield, and never meant anything. I&#39;m certain I wasn&#39;t the only K2554. Didn&#39;t stop me from knowing it, though.

<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Most civilian police departments don&#39;t give badge numbers. A few like LAPD, NYC, and MPD (Metropolitan Police Department... the DC police) use them, but many don&#39;t. They have credential numbers on their IDs, so a lot like out DOD ID numbers.

<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Army MP’s used to get badges back in the old days in the 80’s in my unit They were kept in the arms room with weapons that you needed a weapons card to get. Numbers were engraved and different from post to post.
