Do "Good Looking" Female Soldiers Have It A Lot Easier In The Army Than Men And "Unfavorable Looking" Females?

In my opinion... YES! YES YES and YES THEY DO! It really depends on their superiors and how professional they are towards that female soldier but from my experience in almost every unit I have been in a good looking female usually is always being recognized for the same work everyone else is doing and when she is recognized it is by a male superior.

I am not exactly hitting on the issue of female soldiers who flirt their way to the top or are always in that parade pretty stance when they talk to higher ups but this definitely ties into it.

I have seen it enough to where it makes me want to report it at times because I like to think of the military as being above looks and being more professional but I see that when it comes to some of our superiors, that is just not the case. Most superiors are more relaxed because the soldier is easier one the eyes and I think it is a big problem we have in the Army and it probably has been for a long time.

Women cannot help that they look good to men nor should they have to worry about it but, we all know that there are a good amount of female soldiers out there that use this to their advantage and we also know that there are a lot of leaders out there that don't check the flirting ways and their human desires at the door when it comes to the military mission.

I used to be on my highschool's debate team way back when so feel free to tell me EXACTLY how you feel good or bad sentiments, I am quite resilient and I am not afraid to express my opinion on any subject.

Yes and it works the other way as well with female leaders and male members. It's just human nature, coded into us over centuries of evolution. Recognizing it is the first step to controlling it.

Honestly, it works both ways. There are plenty of female NCO's in my field that always get the choice positions, and better opportunities, but if you actually know them and see them work they are no better or worse than most. Males too. Male soldiers who may have won a board or two, or done something good a few deployments ago are still riding off of that. Haven't done anything since.

I agree I've seen good looking women get special treatment, but on the reverse side of it I've also seen that same good looking girl get raked over the coals when she screwed up. For me I guess they just get noticed more whether it's doing their job right or messing up.

Well to my experience I've seen pretty females get pulled from the line platoon and get put into an office job like OPS or something. Also I've seen a female on the job site set down and say I can't do this (Engineer work.) The COC sent her to work in HHC in a shop. Also I've seen females on profiles get put into office jobs so they can "recover." First off if your a male and you set down and the job site and say I can't do this you going to get destroyed faster than a duck on a June bug.

SPC Gamble,

For the most part, the NCO's I served with kept it professional. But it happened back when I was in, I imagine it happens now. How I dealt with it if I did run into it is to remember what my Pop told me when I was knee high to a grasshopper.

He would say, "If you spent half as much time and effort worrying about what your supposed to be doing as you do what other people are supposed to be doing, you would get a helluva lot more accomplished."

I'm not saying you should ignore it. But if it isn't an EO issue or something that should be reported then don't waste your time and energy worrying about it. You are a vital part of whatever mission you are assigned to carry out and spending time on this detracts from your contribution to your team.

I wasn't an NCO while I was in so I can't speak to a supervisor's perspective. To be honest when it did happen it didn't rise to the level of making an EO complaint. I couldn't control it, so I moved out with my own missions and let the NCO's deal with it. Maybe if there is a mentor NCO you can talk with openly you can discuss this with them.

While I noticed this being a big problem when I first came into the army back in 1999 it has actually gotten better in recent time's however it is not just the "Good Looking" Females it is every female and I think the reason for this was in part to male Soldiers afraid of correcting them and being accused of harassing the female Soldier and there lack of understanding that male or female a Soldier is a Soldier I have had other NCO's and Soldiers come to me and tell me about a female Soldier that was out of regulation and when asked if they corrected her they would reply no I am not gonna do that and have her try to get me in trouble so I would proceed to go over and correct her like I would any male Soldier, after doing this several times I noticed the males in the unit would make corrections to them without so much fear. I had came in the army as signal and as such have worked around females almost my whole career when I reclassed to artillery and they started integrating females in a lot of the Soldiers had never worked around females so it was a transition time for them to understand while in uniform we are all Soldiers male or female. It is important though to make sure if you do see females getting favorable treatment due to being a female you need to say something and put a stop to it. I was lucky in that when I was a young lower enlisted Soldier me and a female Soldier got caught drinking underage the 1sg was gonna give her a company grade article 15 with everything suspended and they were going to take mine to a field grade article 15 until my Platoon SGT

wanted to know why two different punishments for the same incident were being recommended when they had no good answer he told them if the punishment is not equal he would go to IG on my behalf and have an investigation started after that we both received Company Article 15's with equal punishments.

Maybe yes, maybe no, in my units it made no difference, we worked hard and played hard.

There was no respit for beauty from mortars, mass casualties, triage, surgery, and recovery.

Its a two headed monster. Some females get special privilege for looks, those same females also get looked over by others because those individuals feel they get by on their looks. The key is to be a fair and impartial leader yourself. Affect change within your AO and as you get promoted your AO increases.

I know it happens. While not so much where I work, in the more general neutral fields it definitely does. I've also seen it made an issue when it wasn't the case. An extremely high-speed soldier who just so happens to be attractive getting recognition for something they wouldn't have gotten recognized for otherwise? Come on. Usually the haters are soldiers that haven't actually done anything to stand out anyway. Either that or their leaders felt that what they've done wasn't outstanding enough to warrant applause. No, it shouldn't happen though. All that we can do is make sure that we uphold ourselves and our soldiers to the standard to prevent it.

I have been Active duty Army for 4 years now and prior to that I was in the National Guard for 4 years. I have had to work for every position and rank I have recieved and my timing with the Army has been off more times then not. I dissagre with you that looks are the deciding factor in each soldiers career progression. As a female I have had to work harder to prove myself beyond the stigma that tends to be attached to female soldiers. I make sure I am squared away as well as my soldiers and I am always professional in my demeanor towards my superiors as well as my peers and subordinates. During my career I have witnessed unfavorable behaviors from certain individuals both high ranking and lower ranking as well as men and women. It all comes down to the level of professionalism from both the chain of command and the soldiers. Some places and units severly lack in this area and some axcel. I feel that as long as you maintain your professionalism then you are covered.

I have had one female in my particular unit that has made herself popular even amongst units out of state. I am not going to go into particulars here, but every time a negative action or performance complaint gets thrown out, people take a step back and take every word this individual says as Holy Writ, and then people have legitimate problems with this specific person, they get cast aside.

I am not going to say its right, or wrong, but its best to attempt help assist the individual rather than throw a flag up. Like or it not, the individual is there, and regardless of your personal feelings of unfairness or discrimination (if you have a valid point then all means go ahead), you might as well get along with such person until the time comes for you to move out and transfer or the person leaves the unit.

No sense in trying to divide the unit because of supposed special treatment. Divide and conquer is NOT a strategy to good leadership NOR is it conducive to mission readiness and operational achievements.

It is a fact. This is something that I am studying in Sociology right now. It's not just the Army, it is everywhere. Good looking people are more than likely to get jobs and move up in the world vs "not so good looking people". It's not so much an Army issue as it is an issue in all of society.

As a female NCO (and fairly attractive if I don't say so myself), I've have not experienced this "easier" that you speak of... I am 5'3" & 125lbs. I mention this because physical strength and endurance is a HUGE part of being in the military. The first impression of me has always been- "welp here's another one we're going to have to baby/carry/protect..."

With that being said, I have been in 2 different light Infantry BDEs, 1 Stryker BDE, & 3 strategic units. During my 12+ years in, I have had to work harder & do more. I've been directly and indirectly asked to prove myself and show that I "belong", that I can carry my own weight. I've been blatantly disrespected and undermined by not only subordinates but my peers and seniors as well.

I've never allowed this to affect who I am as a person or who I am as an NCO. I keep my mouth shut and CM. I don't know how many times I've been Something along the lines of "Da** Private/SPC/SGT/SSG Q, when I first saw you I never expected you to be as, you know, not girly/weak as you look."

It wears on you sometimes but it's part of being in a male-dominate career & it's pushed me to succeed in ways I don't think I could if I hadn't had so many people expecting me to fail or quit.

So to answer your question; no, we don't get treated better or have it easier. If anything, and this is from my experience, the "unfavorable" looking females almost get accepted in immediately because often times they LOOK the part of "rough & tough, and ready to rock".

Although anyone can make it in the Armed Forces, I would say that human nature and studies confirm your assertion, however, that does not mean that you should avoid hard work because of it. Looks will only carry so far. Tests must be mastered.

We each have our strengths and weaknesses, it is what we do with our assets that brings us either up, or down. It is also incumbent on us to strengthen our weaknesses.

At one time, my spelling ability was a liability, but I worked on it. Sure there are some words I have to check, however, over time that became a chore that I have to address less often.
What you make a mistake with, is comparing for the benefit of making an excuse for yourself, instead of comparing so as to find weaknesses in your makeup and improving them to assets. One is self defeating, the other would be iron sharpening iron.
My advice to you, get a mentor, listen to what they say, learn from them, and DON'T question every piece of advice. If you actually outgrow your mentor, seek another that will challenge you.

Oh MY, I feel deprived! My first four years in the Air Force I heard tell that there were female airmen, but never came in contact with any. You see there was the Women's air Force and the Men's Air Force. In basic the women had their flights and the men had their flights. I spent three years in Germany in a small squadron with no female airmen. So I really can't answer the question, I just want to gripe a little. Actually, after I re-enlisted and was assigned to the 46th Comm. Squadron at Barksdale AFB I worked in a Comm. Relay station that had female airmen on the shifts. I never noticed any of them getting preferential treatment and it wasn't because there weren't any cute ones!

If you spend any amount of time in a large mass of people you will notice multiple groups will gravitate towards each other... Each ethnicity will gravitate to a common place. Caucasians to Caucasians, Hispanics to Hispanics and so-on. men to men and women to women. At a certain point you will see sub groups grow Bikers, Hip hop aficionados, Gay, Lesbian... so on and so forth. <br><br>And at a certain level you will watch as Men gravitate towards the women. <br><br>to put this in terms... this Army is a cultural melting pot. when you look at a 150 man Company you will go to the barracks and see the same thing... The Gamers will be gaming with gamers, the cool and the hip will be playing Beer Pong, and so on and so on... People with always Gravitate to things they can relate to, or find attractive. <br><br>Put a group of people in a field, on a colder night... with one Camp Fire... and watch them gravitate towards the campfire and find that group that they find comfortable.<br><br>It can be called a natural Bias if you will, its not conscious thought. That being said there are always exceptions. If a Caucasian man was raise with and around Hispanics he will gravitate towards Hispanics because that's what he is comfortable with. <br><br>As a group Humans have a natural Bias for that which is attractive... Females are more appealing to the eye than a man is. Hood and here on Bagram, it's hard not to be a little angry when you're at the DFAC and you see a group of male senior leadership having lunch/dinner with the new, pretty 1LT/PFC that came onto the base.  I would be willing to bet that in some of those situations, those same CSMs/LTCs and higher probably wouldn't give the time of day to a male junior enlisted soldier.  I think what needs to be kept in mind and asked is if it's the female's fault for being pretty, putting herself in that situation, etc.?  If you start answering yes to any of those hypotheses, congrats, you might be a sexist.  That same reasoning is the same kind of reasoning that you hear from guys talking about women that are raped: "She was pretty and putting herself out to bigger, more experienced men.  What do you think was going to happen?"  "She was asking for it and just got to feeling guilty afterwards."  "You know she wants it because of how she's dressing."<br><br>I've heard this garbage in-person, and it makes me freaking sick.<br><br>Blaming females for existing in an environment that has historically provided a safe haven for sexual predators, lecherous old men, and a sex-starved enlisted class is probably the single dumbest line of reasoning I've ever heard.  This issue as a whole is only a problem because we, men, make it out to be one.   <br><br>Now, to be fair, there are some women in the military that know *exactly* what they are doing.  Some get caught, and some folks fall for it hook, line, and sinker.  In the two reserve units that I've been in, I've only known maybe two out of scores of women that were purposely manipulative.  One got found out and thankfully, the command was tracking on all of it and came down hard, while the other was more subtle about it all and managed to be get promoted.<br><br>Either way though, this still comes back to the men for falling for this crap, or knowing exactly what's happening and still not caring.  Don't ever put blanket blame on an entire gender for the misbehavior of a few.  That's the same as a woman saying that "all men are pigs" because one guy treated her like crap.

This is not an "Army thing" or military thing. Studies have shown that attractive people (both men and women) get better jobs, more attention from thier bosses and better opportunities. This type of thing is societal and happens everywhere from the boardrooms to the mail room. SHOULD it happen, no. But in reality it does. In my experience in the MP Corps, I have seen more female soldiers go to the SGT board with little experience as a gunner, driver and a team leader. The TML is supposed to be subject matter experts in the field. As a squad leader I expect my TML to have the basics. We can working others aspects of being TML when the need arises.

That is a sterotype and as NCOs if we have this perception than it needs to be addressed.  It is a stereotype, all the females I have ever known have worked for everything that they have gotton.  However, low-density MOS personnel, in my opinion tend to have to fight harder and justify everything that they get.  Never once, has anyone ever accredited accomplishements to females because they earned it.  From what I have seen and experienced there is always a preconceived idea about the subject.

I'm not saying that this is always the case, but I figured I'd share because I remember reading about this subject in one of my Psych classes. Obviously as professionals we are expected to make unbiased and sound judgement decisions. This can sometimes be difficult, especially if we ignore or are unaware of how our actions affect the individual perceptions of those around us.

Excerpt from Applied Psychology

The information we gather when we first meet someone influences how we perceive an individual and also influences how we treat that individual. This information helps us to categorize them as having positive qualities and negative qualities. This influence is known as physical attractiveness stereotype. Physical attractiveness stereotype is the expectation that a physically attractive person has positive qualities while a non-attractive person has negative qualities (Schneider, Gruman, & Coutts, 2012). When we first meet someone and we deem them as attractive with positive qualities, we tend to interact and treat them in a positive way. If we meet someone that we deem to be unattractive with negative qualities, we tend to treat them in a negative way. We may not always be rude, but we don't treat them as we do someone who we find attractive. The ONLY unit that I DIDN'T see this was in an all-male unit. It's very common. I can't count the number of times I heard that a leader had taken the good looking Soldier "under their wing to protect them being preyed upon." That in itself implies we're just a bunch of vultures waiting on new meat. Before long, they're an "item" no matter how hard they try to convince everyone otherwise. The court martial of BG Sinclair might be used as an example. Not saying anything other than it "could" be used as an example. Commanders have even implied it at times; they need to select someone for a very public position (adjutant, driver, assistant, etc).....then the kicker "remember to consider the unit's image" or something to that effect. The implication is there. We have programs in place to prevent/deal with these issues but it's always going to be a problem (or we wouldn't NEED the programs in the first place).

The two instances I can immediately recall of this happening both occurred during AIT. The first one was that our platoon sgt chose the two "most attractive" (in quotes because attractiveness is objective) females to become his personal assistants, i.e. sitting inside all day filing papers and playing on Facebook while the rest of the platoon pulled details. When someone got up the nerve to point it out he said it was because "women are better at the job he needed done". No one bothered bringing it up again. Now as I'm sure most of you are aware there are phases of priviledges in AIT, and one morning during PT one of the females in our company ran faster at the 300 yard sprint than two males and went straight from phase 4 to phase 5+ immediately following PT because the platoon sgt felt that she was trying harder than everyone else out there. Now to say it happens all the time, I can't really say seeing as I've only been to two units not counting AIT. However, if it happens a lot within my MOS I wouldn't be surprised seeing as females are a rare breed in the 25S world.

Well I could equate good looks to confidence and confidence to success. Being a good looking female might help a bit more as they would have confidence and the benefit of male superiors, but I think its mostly about confidence.

While I think it is a scientific fact, that life is easier for those easier on the eyes. Good looking people always have it easier but in the military this can be a double edged sword, especially for females. There is still, thank God, some reminisces of a masculine military from our past. Women, I hope this is no shock to anyone, are not guys. You can put men and women in the same uniforms, but everyone know we are different. One is not better than the other but we are different and in a masculine leaning environment, this is going to favor men…at least where the rubber meets the road. It is just a fact that in our politically correct world, if you have the right looks and gender you are going to have an easier time than someone who does not in some areas.

When I was a young SGT and my wife was a SPC my BN CSM moved her to the BN S-1 which was cool because she was a 71L (42a now). Then he moved a couple of female cooks in there too. The whole BN s-1 was female except for the NCOIC which was a SGT(e-5) and trust me, besides the NCOIC every female in their looked good. Im not even going to lie. My wife looked the best though (brownie points)
Fast Forward the CSM and BN CDR was relieved after it was found out they were messing with female Soldiers in the S-1 and the whole freaking BN. So yeah it does happen.
Now days I see it like this.
1. new female soldier gets to the unit and looks good
2. Her MOS could be 88M, 92F, or a freaking mechanic
3. She speaks to the COC says she is ready to work
4. ends up in the orderly room lol.
Its crazy how open it is sometimes.

Unfourtantly, I see it and it can be very bothersome. In my 11 year career I have seen female soldiers I guess you can say use their femininity to their advantage. Senior leaders both male and female need to grow a 'set' (you choose which set) and enforce the standard. If they F**k up, scuff em up and let them know that dog aint going to hunt. To the female soldiers, dont use your looks to get you out of hot water, details etc because you dont want to face the music. If that being the case, do us all a favor and get off at the next exit. Gentlemen (yes Im sendiing a sidewinder up your 6 too) Clear your heads (BOTH of them....pardon my french but lets be real here). You need to exercise sound judgement and hold your battle buddies accountable. If you cant do that, then the same goes for you, make swift exit at the next off ramp. From my experience yes, no, and sometimes worse. Sometimes there are times where they APPEAR to have it easier. Turns out they may have been doing more that you have not seen or witnessed and that is why they are being awarded. You may just notice this because they caught your eye and that is what drew your attention and you did not remember someone less attractive or a male Soldier.

There are times though that the chain of command crosses the line and does flirt or are having inappropriate relationships with their female (and male) Soldiers. It is not the norm and it should be corrected right away as this is toxic and totally inappropriate and will ultimately destroy the unit.

No, they are treated like everyone else. Plainly put they are "just one of the guys".

They may have it worse as sometimes in order to maintain that they are not favoring a particular Soldier they go out their way to make their life harsh. Whether this is what they intend or is just consequence from ensuring that they distance themselves they can end up hurting that individual and make it even harder for them to be promoted with their peers or recognized in any manner.

And to totally open the can of worms, sometimes female officers or NCOs treat their "more attractive" females harshly and make their lives miserable either out of spite, jealously, or assume that they were given everything they ever wanted in their life and it's time for them to deal in the "real world".

All of these I have seen. So when you get out there and see many other units you will see that these all occur and probably more than these.

Well the fact remains that it is not limited to the uniform, some beautiful folks lose face with their actual proven performance and others have to step up. I think the question is pertinent as I have had the opportunity to work next to women since basic training in 1987. I was told I was a " parade pretty" female by a male NCO and I haven't had it well because I'm tired of being reprimended one on one by this NCO and the counseling statements. Males treat me like I am trying to flirt my way to the top but I don't want any of these dorky motherfuckers asses. I don't wear makeup, rarely do my hair and my uniform is one million sizes too big for me as I've lost weight from my pregnancy and ever since I got back from maternity leave I've been complimented up and down, sent flirtatious messages and even dick pics! I really don't feel that attractive at this point in my life but none the less, it's inappropriate. They overlook the fact I'm good at my job, whereas there are less attractive females than me actually flirting their way to the top and don't do their job. In fact, the least attractive females are treated with much more respect and like they are actually intelligent and I am treated like I can't understand shit! I am not sure you aware how harmful your mentality is to women. Because of this stereotype many 'attractive' women actually have it harder to be taken seriously or respected. These women are threaten by men like yourself, other women, and spouses! I was told just today that the girlfriend of one of the male's I work with hates me for this exact reason. Supposedly, I am too attractive to work alongside her boyfriend and spend all my work hours in the same office as him. She is threaten by something I am MANDATED to do.

I live in Hawaii, and I shop at the Military Exchange for my clothes. Do you know how many times I have been approached by 'unattractive' women to complain about my clothes being too revealing? Do I have any say on what the exchange carries in my size? No I don't. I buy clothes because they fit, are affordable and are comfortable for the climate. If my clothes meet base regulations on civilian attire, what right do they have to condone what I wear?

Because I am young female, I have literally been told by my former 1SG that he would not send me to the promotion board because enlisted females are not as capable and I am too 'young'. I talk to EO and IG, and I am not taken seriously because of the sterotype that 'attractive' women like to cause trouble and our claims are by association unfounded. Do you even understand how disheartening it is to feel like this EVERYDAY? How it feels when soldiers you work with sexualize everything you do? OR who are afraid to work with you for fear of reprisal from their spouses?

While deployed, I was called a cunt because I apparently led some of the guys in my platoon on just by discussing work-related topics! I was called a whore by another woman because I spent my off-duty deployment time volunteering to teach the Iraqi children leadership skills and working in the Chapel.

I hate women that flirt/sleep their way to the top as much as anyone else, because they undermine the efforts for respect that women fight for. Years later, I found out from my chief that my first-line supervisor hated me and did not want me on her team from day 1 because I was attractive and capable. I had a female CSM that was way more critical to women than men to the point that she almost stopped my reenlistment because I was 1lb over on my weight, despite meeting body fat standards!

Genetics are what make a person attractive and healthy lifestyle choices keep them that way. Do you know how many times I have wished to be male so I can hang with my friends without being sexualized or threatening to their relationships? As a military female in general, do you understand how hard it is to fit in with female civilian spouses that you have nothing in common?

The point of this matter is that your perception is exactly that, a perception. You will never truly understand what it is like to be a female in the military or the challenges we face DAILY! Attractive or Not.

What I have seen is not a problem with females or males specifically... good looking or otherwise. Rather, the problem lies in lackadaisical and unconcerned leadership failing to follow the spirit of the regulations that are meant to promote good order and discipline. Many NCO's choose which regulations to follow and therein lies the problem.

It's abundantly clear that many Soldiers are treated more like friends by superiors rather than as the leaders or subordinates they are... and that's likely the reason why so many senior leaders here in Korea and elsewhere in the Army get hemmed up for inappropriate relationships that end careers and stigmatize entire formations.

Like all issues in the military, disciplined leadership enforcing and following the spirits of the regulations, laws, and policies meant to keep our Soldiers and Units safe and ready is the key... and that starts by the current leaders instilling the right values and tendencies in the entry level Soldiers and officers that join the ranks of the Army.

SGT Gamble, if you are studying this subject in sociology, then you know that attraction between the sexes is both physiological and sociological. God designed us to be attracted to the opposite sex to ensure adequate procuration and the establishment of the family to protect children. (There's a long discussion on why this is an advantage for the human species over other species that isn't important to your question.) Try as they have, the services haven't been able to completely train the physical attraction mechanism out of people. After 40 years of sexual harassment, human relations, HARP, SHARP training, and my wife's best efforts, I still am attracted to "pretty women."

The sociology part of the equation is how one reacts to the normal attraction. Your family, religion, school, and many other societal influences tell you how to react. In this case, the 40 years of training has impacted my behavior. The attraction is still there, I recognize it, and control it. Not as simple as it sounds. NCOs and Officers must be very vigilant not to favor one person over another based on sex, race, religion, age, (your EO officer can explain "protected classes"). Decisions should always be based on mission needs and the person's qualifications. Sometimes we're tempted to overcorrect, that is favor a person because they should "get a break" because of all the problems their gender, race, religion, age group have had to endure. It's difficult, but it's important enough to make a fair and unbiased decision every time. Problems arise when supervisors and managers don't make decisions based on nondiscriminatory standards and practices. The Service ends up losing good people because they believe they aren't treated fairly and EEO and EO complaints can cost the Service operational dollars. A sustained EEO or EO complaint can terminate your career.

As to good looking female soldiers being unfairly recognized for their effort, yes, it can happen. Before you launch into an indictment of all male supervisors, NCOs, officers for this behavior, you need to take a close look at the people involved and the unit. You may find the attractive female was in fact more capable, qualified, and confident than her male or female counterparts. In short, she deserved the recognition. If you believe the unit has a pattern of not fairly recognizing soldiers, then talk to your chain of command about it or go to your EO office. Please be polite and respectful in dealing with this question, because it is an emotionally charged issue.

Just think about the ratio of #1: females compared to males in the Army, #2: Out of those females, the ones that are pretty! This number is obviously very low, we all know that. We also know that as a whole, the Army typically might attract a more "type A" personality of males and females, so many females in the Army might be a more "hard charging" type (which there is nothing wrong with.)

Of course good looking people tend to be treated a little better, this is universal and human nature. I have seen attractive females get hit on in the workplace by co-workers and superiors alike and you probably have as well, its nothing new. My point is, the ratio of total males to total attractive females in the Army is grossly unbalanced, maybe more so than say a corporate workplace. This leads to a high level of attention and "value" upon these females, which ties into an increased level of influence that these females have. It's unfortunate, but its human nature.

To be honest (and I'm sure I'll get crap for this), good looking people in general have life easier than "unfavorable looking" people. This goes for both males and females.

I don't think it's even a conscious thing most of the time, so calling it sexism or favoritism, while true, is a little bit unfair.

I think that it's something that will never be overcome completely, but we tend to be kinder, more understanding, and just generally more interested in people that we find good looking. This can be people we are attracted to, or people of other than our attracted to sex.

My LTC put it to me this way once, "When you get right down to it, we're all just a bunch of butt sniffing dogs." My own personal observations reinforce the notion that the prettiest females always seemed to gravitate toward the head shed and HQ. But they had to have more on the ball that just looks. And yes, they knew what they were doing. Some flirted their way to the top; others slept their way up. It works both ways. The women were just using all the tools nature gave them to exploit their superiors and get what they wanted... faster promotions, more pay, prestige and all that. It's human nature and I don't see that changing any time soon because it hasn't changed in the last few thousand years. These things don't go away after you get out of the military. The same kind of stuff goes on in the Private Sector as well. No matter how much people try to justify it, it's still unprofessional and it's still wrong.

For those of us in leadership positions or who were in leadership positions, you have to resist the temptation to give more attention to certain individuals based on their attractiveness because you are in effect giving them AND OTHERS handles that they can shake you with. And if you have a junior that is trying to give you unsolicited attention, you have to set up the boundaries and maintain a professional distance. You stand to lose the most should things start to smell of fraternization and improper conduct. If you keep everything above board and professional and make every effort to treat ALL your subordinates fairly, you AND YOUR SUBORDINATES will be better off all the way around. You do NOT want to be implicated or even have your name come up saying you made untoward advances toward a junior -- especially in your Chain of Command!

Exceptional looking women will use their looks to try and get over because,,,, Men have encouraged and enabled that behavior. It is YOUR responsibility to treat these women as just another troop. Believe me, if they are that good looking they already have a boyfriend, girlfriend, fiancee or husband. They really don't need you fawning all over them trying to curry their favor. Treat them as just another troop and they will be so surprised yet grateful that you will gain a new friend, someone who will always have your 6. If you succumb to their good looks they see you as weak, they even expect it. Surprise them, it's a Win-Win.

Disadvantages of being "Good looking"
1. People expect you to be less talented. Especially in academics.
2. If you are a male, you're perceived - by myopic people - as a player.
3. You're surrounded by fake people.
4. You can't stay covert for long periods, as you're easily recognizable.
5. You somehow find yourself in the cross-hair of psychos.
6. When you give people an inch, they try to take a yard.
7. If you are a woman, men will often assume you are very sexually experienced, because they will assume that it is impossible for a woman so beautiful to be so pure, since men are constantly chasing after her.

Actually I have found it to be quite the opposite. We had several beautiful women in our brigade. They were treated like eye candy more than actual soldiers. One in particular was not promoted for several years even though she had NO problems on her record, no AFPT issues, nor any other reason save for the fact she was treated as a Barbie Doll. She finally had to go to the IG.

Good looking people both male and female generally receive slightly better treatment. It starts in school. A study was done and showed that above average looking students received more attention from the teacher resulting in higher grades. It is an unconscious response to good looking people. I'm not talking about obvious flirting type behavior to gain favor. That type of behavior needs to be dealt with by leadership.

There is great merit to this assertion. Everyone will deny it, but it's true. Too many get by on Parade Pretty for years and years, making rank on an escalator, while those that fall short in the looks department has to get there the hard way...if they're lucky.

I see that this is a 3-year old question. Ask yourself, what was your rank THEN, and compare to a Parade Pretty candidate at the same time. Where are the both of you at now??

Interesting. My bestfriend and I will be joining the military this year and we have always been complimented by people because of our apperance, but let's be honest beauty is the eye of beholder so we can never really say everyone will favor a "pretty women," because everyone has their own preference or what THEY find attractive.

The news did studies years ago about how better-looking people in general get more opportunities. That being said, looks is a double-edged sword. People may also get some unwanted attention (I.e. sexual harassment) and others saying that all they did is traded on their looks / slept their way to the top.

Good looking people generally have a leg up. But I've also seen service members get underestimated because people think they are an empty barrel with a pretty face. It doesn't matter if it is in the military or in the civilian world. Whether that advantage crosses gender lines or not, who knows?

It all depends on how much weight the person calling the shots gives to their own list of biases and prejudices. And we all have our own set of unjustified biases and prejudices. That is why it is important to have reliable advisors that are bold enough to tell you that you are being a "jackass."

Case in point, the comptroller at my wife's place of employment will not even consider a male applicant to work in the accounting department.
