Do I really have to fly to my next station just to get permissive TDY and the night fly BACK home?

I’m finishing up training at Fort Huachuca scheduled to attend DLI sometime in January, they’re sending me to DLI early at the end of the month, for some unknown reason my orders only give me 2 day so travel so I’m unable to take leave directly from Fort Huachuca to retrieve my household goods (I’m married), so I have to fly to DLI check in, then ask for permissive TDY then pay out of pocket to fly back home and then drive back to DLI. What are my options? Any possible way around this convoluted mess? I can’t even buy a plane ticket because I don’t know how quickly I’ll be approved for permissive TDY. Beforehand i got my orders I was told I would be given time to leave from Fort huachuca to move my household goods. And being that it’s the end of the month I basically have to pay for an extra month of rent at my old place just for a few days of November because of this. Any suggestions?

Once the orders are cut then it’s usually up to your new command. You should apply for enroute Permissive TDY while you still have time to report at your ordered arrival date at your next unit.

Your current field-grade commander can approve it if you can convince him. It most likely requires you to request, then be given a face-to-face interview with the commander who is allowed to sign. He will have his staff call your next unit to make sure it doesn’t cause issues. He will then decide if the course meets the needs of the service.

For instance, wanting to go to a political rally will probably be turned down.
On the other hand, In the 80s I attended the National Guard's Mountain Warfare School (AMWS) at the Camp Ethan Allen Training Site, Jericho, Vermont.

Be aware that he will probably contact call your next unit field-grade commander to make sure it doesn’t cause issues.

You will have to pay all costs and will not get any diversion miles or transportation costs. That can be a heavy sum. The only benefit will be if you get injured or killed the service will cover those health cost/burial fees.

That would be the problem Sergeant, my orders were cut really close, not allowing me enough time to request permissive TDY, which is why I have no option but to fly to my next unit, request permissiveness TDY, pray I get it, and then fly back to help my wife move.

PFC (Join to see) - Based on the information you gave SFC (Join to see) - I would recommend you check to make sure you're not doing some other training at Monterrey first. If not then get an interview with the commander at DLI and follow what I said above just at the DLI Commander's desk.

No, Sergeant. Fort Huachuca is an AIT school for most of the 35 series MOS’s, I just finished training to become a 35M and instead of a duty station most of us are being sent to directly to DLI to attend language school as well.

DLI is in Monterrey CA, my report date is at the end of October and my class start date isn’t in Mid January.

PV2 Jon Myers] Since your class start date isn’t until Jan you’ll have time to take Permissive TDY. Just to make sure you understand PTDY is solely for house-hunting and suppose to be taken at the duty/school location. The Army is responsible for getting you from point A to the next station, anything in between (leave) is out of pocket on the Soldier. If you have your orders already, may I suggest you get in touch with transportation to schedule your household pick up, they can help you to coordinate your pick up so this will help with the time you’re working with. Make sure your orders reflect you have dependents, this will also allow for your wife to have her plane ticket paid for by the government (this will help you with the cost). This way you’ll only have to pay for your ticket. Everything to include household set-up should be complete prior to the start of class. Don’t look at the early report as a negative, the early report allows you the time to get everything situated prior to class. I hope this helps. Let me know if you ha e any other concerns.

I'm not sure how that works, but if you have to purchase tickets in an unpredictable situation, I suggest calling the airline directly and let them know you are military. Some of them allow you to cancel the ticket for a full refund as if you had travel insurance.
