That person is on profile for a reason whether it be they landed wrong on a jump or a car accident so I understand why they are limited physically as to what they can do. What bothers me is when one of them parades around the PT field and tells everyone how chewed up they are and how they suck at PT. I think you lose the right to be pompous about PT (not correcting soldiers or giving constructive criticism) when you can no longer participate.
I base it on their other merits. If they are a good leader and can share their knowledge and experience in an effective manner then I don't care if they are on profile. If they barely talk to the joes and you can't rely on them or think they are a deployment dodger then I have no use for them. basically it doesn't matter to me.
Had a SFC in my old unit that would say to any soldier on profile "I've had such and such amount of surgeries, why are you on a profile cause you don't need to." He would say that to soldiers that had just gotten off of convalescent leave like myself. Nobody had respect for him.
