Do they still award the GWOT?

I have been in the Army over 3 years now. I went to S1 to build up my ribbons for the board and when I asked about the GWOT they told me they stopped awarding it in early 2016. I enlisted June of 2016. Did I miss the cutoff?! If so I think it is weird that there are Soldiers still fighting terrorism in the middle east but they don’t award it anymore because the “War on Terrorism is over”. Just wondering I have been curious for awhile now and I can’t seem to find anything on google.

Found my answer.

. Effective 30 March 2016, the GWOTEM is no longer authorized to be awarded for service in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. Soldiers serving in Iraq and/or Syria are only authorized the Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal (IRCM) after this date. The GWOTEM is authorized for direct support deployments, such as Kuwait or Qatar.

1. GWOTSM: The Global War on Terrorism Service Medal (GWOTSM) was established by Executive Order 13289, 12 March 2003. It is authorized for award to members of the Armed Forces of the United States who have participated in or served in support operations in the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) operations outside of the designated areas of eligibility (AOE) for the GWOTEM (see GWOTEM Q&A), on or after 11 September 2001 to a future date to be determined. Battalion commanders and commanders of separate units have the authority to award the GWOTSM for approved operations to units and personnel within his or her command. Service members must be assigned, attached, or mobilized to a unit supporting designated operations for 30 consecutive days or for 60 nonconsecutive days, or meet one of the following criteria:

a. Initial award of the GWOTSM. Limited to airport security operations (from 27 September 2001 through 31 May 2002) and Soldiers who supported Operations NOBLE EAGLE, ENDURING FREEDOM (OEF).

b. All Soldiers on active duty, including Reserve Component Soldiers mobilized, or National Guard Soldiers activated on or after 11 September 2001 to a date to be determined having served 30 consecutive days or 60 nonconsecutive days are authorized the GWOTSM.

c. Service members may be awarded both the GWOTEM and the GWOTSM if they meet the criteria for both awards; however, the qualifying period used to establish eligibility for one award cannot be used to justify eligibility for the other award. The GWOTSM will be worn after the GWOTEM and both will directly follow the Kosovo Campaign Medal (KCM) (that is, KCM, GWOTEM, GWOTSM, Korean Defense Service Medal (KDSM), and so forth.)

d. Subsequent awards. Only one award of the GWOTSM may be authorized to any individual; therefore, second and subsequent awards will not be awarded.

Did you check the regulation or just use "google"...? I see one respondent referenced the "HRC website" but he and you should have both looked in the regulations. This will serve you moving forward; especially if you are preparing for the board.

You are your own best S1. Go to the Army HRC awards FAQ page for awards you think you qualify for.

The GWOTS medal can be awarded at the O5 level for anything done to support the GWOT.

As a former Promotions NCO, I refer you to the Awards Regulations. Also make sure you have copies of ALL schools, medals, and awards. Check your 201 file and ensure everything which count for points is actually IN your records. Good Luck with the Promotions Board! Know your General Orders!

The GWOT may not be an award that many people know about, but it is still an important military award.
