Do we place too much emphasis on popularity within society and politics?

Personally, I hate the fact that politicians use popularity and so-called social and Hollywood figures to gain an advantage in their favor amongst the American people just for potential votes. I guess it is our faults because Americans hold these so-called social and Hollywood figures in such high regard and importance. What ever happened about getting out and talking to the common people, finding important issues and coming up with strategies to make the United States a better place to live and grow?

It's their attempt to appeal to the masses. Gets their name and face out there to people that would otherwise not see it, generally speaking. Is it over done? Sure is, but what isn't in politics?

Even it we go with popularity, Hillary Clinton will not be the next President regardless of how many celebrities post selfies with her. She's the least popular person in the race, a virtual sinkhole for popularity. She just sucks it out of the air. Her campaign is in the dumps already and the campaigning season has hardly begun. The last time she ran strong right up to the finish line only to be overtaken by Barack Obama. That being said, who is popular? None of the Republican candidates seem to have it. Trump is polling well currently only because he's saying nasty things about the government and most people feel like they deserve it. However, that won't get him elected. Ben Carson is a helluva nice guy but nice guys always finish last, don't they? And, if we don't have a candidate who is popular, what will sway our votes? Competence? Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter were the most competent Presidents in recent history and both were abysmal failures (plenty of blame there for both parties). Cruz is competent, the smartest candidate in the race, but totally unpopular, even in his own party. Experience? What experience equates with the Presidency? Principles? A politician with principles? LMAO! So, I guess we're stuck with popularity.

I agree,Sure wish we had some of those retired 4 stars running. I always said: if you do not like the boss--then be the boss. I am sure a few generals would fit that category. No matter who is in they can't do a hell of a lot with out congress. To bad this Congress followed (half) the Pied Piper on decisions.

They do talk to the "common" people...it's just their version of the "common" people. I don't think any of us on here can afford those $1000 dinner meet and greets that to them are "regular" and "common" donations. None of us on here are billionaires that can afford to loose a million or two in order to "buy" the candidate we want. lastly I haven't seen or heard of a presidential candidate or a congressman running for office ever go to a trailer park or the ghetto's and have a one on one with anybody there. But they represent the core of America right? Can't be true when most of America is working class or poor.

When a no talent "music artist" and amateur porn artist get together with a politician this is what you get? Really this is the best and brightest our country has to offer for leadership?
